Hindu offering in River Ravensbourne

Hindu offering in River Ravensbourne

Obviously better than a Lime Bike and I understand it is customary to remove these after the festival (in September) if they do not dissolve, where these are usually made from loose clay. However this example shows no sign of decay so I was wondering whether the persons who placed it there will be removing it according to Hindu and common environmental ethics, as even if it it is made of natural materials, we don't want to encourage people to place anything else in the river, and it feels like something any cleanup volunteers might not want to interfere with.

Joggers running in cycle lanes

This has started happening a lot more now. Cyclists get so little space on the road, but then to be faced with a jogger taking up that space, usually with headphones in so wistfully unaware of their surroundings. This also extends to joggers running on the road. It’s just not safe and pretty annoying.

Today cycling over London Bridge during rush hour, a jogger is taking up the entire cycle lane. I asked him calmly to join the pavement to which he responds “oh go away you disgusting wh***”. Nice.

Service at The Tab today

Seems to be a very good turnout for a funeral this afternoon. Sorry to discuss what must be a personal matter to many but seemed to be a very popular person and wondered who it was.

Is this a Seamaster?

Sorry for the image from a dark scene but this is the only one available online and I've not been able to capture others of the same character (Gabi Ayub) from the series (Fauda) where his watch is visible.

I note another actor, Lior Raz who plays Doron in the series is an Omega brand ambassador and wears a Seamaster Diver in the show but only in later series, and I have found no reference to other characters.

Why would glucose still be listed as an ingredient on the can?

i.e. syrup whereas sugar in other forms consumed in the fermentation would not?

Does this mean Cruzcampo has more added at the end?

Also confusingly it's no longer listed as an ingredient on their website while I've definitely seen it on the can, as verified by an Internet search. What has changed. The process or labelling requirements?

I note they also state it's not suitable for vegetarians due to other ingredients in the factory.

Sorry I don't normally drink this piss but was handed a can and was curious about the weird ingredients and taste.

Where can go in the UK that is neither pro-Palestine nor racist?

I don't know whether is just the polarisation that is pushed by social media but it seems that anti Israeli/ Jewish sentiment is so ingrained in the left that it is unavoidable in any cosmopolitan city, while moving away from such places you are potentially faced with a population that doesn't care about Palestine because they don't care about anyone who isn't white and British, and often that won't include British Jews.

I've only ever lived in London but would worry about escaping to somewhere where the hate is just from the other side of the political spectrum.

Frankly though, I feel the supposed open-mindedness of these cities largely serves to protect minority groups from criticism, and as long as I found somewhere people weren't antisemitic, I would not really suffer from the reduced multiculturalism.

Andy Burnham warns of open water swimming dangers

The warning was issued by UK Prime Minister after a family drowned in the sea.

Sorry to be harsh here but does this warning grate on anyone else?

In the UK, the latest complete figures show 202 accidental drownings or water-related deaths in 2025. 32% were of people doing everyday activities such as walking or running who were likely to have entered the water unintentionally.

31% of adults in England cannot swim the length of a 25m pool.

Meanwhile at lakes and reservoirs we're told it's cold water shock that will kill even strong swimmers, and entering virtually any open body of water withoutlifeguards is vehemently discouraged.

Obviously different places have different very real hazards but surely the biggest is not being able to swim.

Grime tune on Trigger Happy TV

Sounded like Danny Weed with a stabby orchestra hit or Turn The Page without the Garage beat

Looking at Spotify playlists from the series compiled by fans, there's nothing even remotely close.

That could just mean that they can't find the track in question on Spotify, which is quite likely for a white label release from that era, but I could have imagined it

Any ideas?

When should police delete biometrics?

Further to an embarrassing incident where my presence on the police computer was disclosed to a family member after my prints were naturally found in my former home, I began the process of having my data deleted.

To initiate this I had to include the details of the arrest, which I needed to retrieve through a subject access request as I could not remember dates and specific charges from a decade ago.

Reviewing the results of the SRA, I noticed that the data held on the Police National Computer petaining to my fingerprints reads: 'DESTRUCTION 01FP XX/XX/XXXX (Date of arrest, while the line on DNA shows 'DESTROYED'.

The date at which it was determined that no further action was to be taken in the case was around 6 months after arrest, and the PNC record shows as last updated around a year after that.

Sorry if Police are exempt from GDPR but I asked on the Police sub, simply for clarification on the line relating to my prints, which apparently means 'marked for deletion'. When I asked for elaboration on whether that meant they should have already been deleted, my thread was deleted as an 'individual complaint', which it wasn't, but may well become.

So 2 questions really.

Should prints and DNA both have been deleted by default after NFA per data regs?

Can the police disclose my presence on the database to 3rd parties i.e. was this a data breach?

Thanks

Should my prints have been deleted?

On PNC, the line pertaining to my fingerprints reads: 'DESTRUCTION 01FP XX/XX/XXXX (Date of arrest)

While DNA shows DESTROYED.

NFA date was around 6 months after arrest date, and PNC record shows as last updated a year after that.

All these dates were over a decade ago.

Thanks

Should I save to eBird?

I currently just save to my Life List within Merlin, which works well to track my personal sightings. Having flipped the setting to saving to eBird, I found it counterintuitive - having to tick off birds on a list of every likely bird in the area - rather than simply having Merlin ID them, and me confirm the sighting, which is the main point of Merlin.

The label on the setting to choose between Merlin and eBird states "When you identify a bird, you can choose to report it on an eBird checklist. Use eBird if you want to keep a complete list of all your sightings that will appear on recent visits, hotspots and species maps."

Is my data useless to the wider community if I don't? I read the below article re forthcoming app updates which states the data will feed to eBird. Does that mean it will just export my past or future Lifers to the eBird database?

Looking at the charts in Merlin where frequency of a sighting drops off 90% from one month to the next, it would seem there are data gaps. Is this what the forthcoming update seeks improve?

Too casual for a summer wedding party?

Note the wedding ceremony and reception has already taken place abroad and this is a subsequent party for family in their home country which will be close to 40°C near the coast.

I was considering this with a linen suit, and shoes TBD.

Has anyone requested alternatives to work authenticator apps due to only having a dumbphone?

Back in the day you used to get physical tokens but now they are all on apps

There are various arguments around the environmental/ cost/ convenience benefit to this but the downside is losing your smartphones, or not having one, and the distraction of having to pick up your phone to log into work apps.

Previously (at another employer after I'd lost my phone) I was able to authenticate via a phone call which is actually more convenient than it sounds. You simply have to answer the call and press a number on the (dumb)phone keypad to confirm you're trying to log in. But I've not seen this since.

Has anyone been able to request physical tokens or alternative methods?

I'm not that fussed about having to use my phone but it seems like things are changing where for example people are increasingly avoiding smartphones and they're started to get banned in schools so it seems so I wonder whether employers would eventually have to rethink making you use a personal device, and moreover a smartphone you may be wishing to avoid.

Velcro number plates

There's a car that's always in my car park with its front plate on the dashboard and not on the front bumper. As I was walking past and happened to look at the front mounting out of curiosity to see how it had fallen off I noticed there were velcro strips. Guessing this is to avoid the private parking enforcement ANPR cameras I presume they flip the plate on the dash over) but surely they would know the drivers is doing something dodgy by only ever exiting and could identify the entering vehicle as the same as the exiting one by other means.
