What do you think about Confucianism? Is it positive or negative?

Confucianism has been considered the East Asian version of conservatism for millennia. Traditionally, Confucianism advocated hierarchy, family values, public education, government regulation and paternalism, bureaucracy, and meritocracy, but it is also considered humanist, rationalist, and non-religious secular. Confucianism is a major influence on East Asian parties like Japan’s LDP, Taiwan’s KMT, and Singapore’s PAP. In recent years China’s CCP has increasingly adopted Confucian symbolism as the country becomes more state capitalist. In the West, Confucianism is said to play a major role in the lives of Asian Americans, and influenced meritocracy and family structures.

Do you think anti-Indian sentiment is rising on both the left and right?

Ever since Indian origin politicians like Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, Kamala Harris, and Jagmeet Singh have risen to prominence, I feel like this has led to a backlash on both the left and the right, especially the Republican Party after Vivek’s comments about American culture. Additionally, there are increasingly negative views about H-1Bs, the majority of which come from India. Politicians like Laura Loomer and Bernie Sanders have called this out. This has caused housing issues in Canada, so racism against Indians is growing in Canada. HR tech workers are also known for hiring within their caste, and still practicing caste discrimination. Lastly, influencers like Tyler Oliveira are traveling to India itself to show how unhygienic the country is, deliberately stoking anti Indian sentiment.

It it dangerous for the US to continue militarizing the Pacific?

Under both Biden and Trump, the US conducted a military buildup in the Pacific and South China Sea, moving troops and naval assets closer to China. This involves building closer ties with Japan and the Philippines, and boosting military cooperation. The goal is to deter China from invading Taiwan and other islands in the South China Sea. However, critics warn militarizing the Pacific will only pressure China into taking more aggressive actions in the region, ironically escalating the conflict the policy meant to prevent.

What do you think about Pakistan sending 8000 troops to Saudi Arabia and the emerging alliances in the Middle East?

Pakistan has sent 8000 troops to Saudi Arabia, honoring a defense treaty. This is part of the emerging Mogadishu axis between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt. These are all Sunni powers that value stability in the Middle East, because they stand to gain from it by being larger powers. By contrast, the Berbera axis consists of the UAE, Israel, and Ethiopia. These are regional powers that are strongly anti-Islamist and militarily powerful in their own right but stand to gain from a shifting balance of power in the Middle East. The UAE funds secular militias like the RSF in Sudan and STC in Yemen, hoping to find routes to import gold. They ally with Ethiopia and Israel to assert Somaliland’s independence, so Israel can counter the Houthis and Ethiopia can have greater port access through Somaliland (it is a landlocked country). This has put them at odds with Somalia, which is backed by Saudi Arabia who does not want greater UAE control of the Red Sea straits, and also supports anti-UAE factions in Sudan and the Yemen. Egypt and Turkey also side with Saudi Arabia, as Turkey has major investments in Somalia and opposes Israel, while Egypt is threatened by the dam being built by Ethiopia. Both alliances are seeking new alliances from abroad. Pakistan’s close religious and cultural ties have made it a natural ally for Saudi Arabia and the Mogadishu axis. India, in opposition to Pakistan and supportive of Israel, has moved closer to the Berbera Axis, including the UAE

How much influence do you think Christianity has on the development of liberalism?

There is a debate on whether or not Greek, Roman, or Christian, or other philosophies influenced modern liberalism/Western values. It’s been said that the image of God in every human influenced the concept of universal equality, human rights, and freedom over kings and monarchs. Early liberal thinkers during the Enlightenment were often Christian, like Locke, but many were explicitly anti-clerical as well. How much do you as a modern liberal believe Christianity influenced your beliefs in one way or another?

What do you think of Trump massing troops near Taiwan?

https://youtube.com/shorts/Vo5VToX4QBk?si=pT8Rl0U2DcRFwkdV

According to the economist, through the guise of military exercises, American troops are increasing in the region, for a total of up to 17,000 across Japan, the Philippines, and other regions. This comes as Beijing changes its strategy to focus on blockading the island, thereby shifting the burden of escalation on the US, which would have to retaliate or let it happen

Do you think Trump could give up Taiwan?

Trump is regarded as the most transactional president ever and can be bought into any policy if he receives enough in bribes. Some say China can steer him into a trade deal or “grand bargain” that compromises and eventually eliminates Taiwan’s sovereignty. However, in my opinion Trump is also a president who cares very much about his legacy and making a mark in the history books. This explains his imperialist and expansionist actions towards Greenland, Venezuela, and more; he wants to be seen as a president who expanded the nation’s borders, like Thomas Jefferson, William McKinley, and James K Polk. Losing Taiwan to China would go against this, and he knows it will look bad for the US and him personally if Taiwan falls to China, so ultimately I don’t think he will give up Taiwan.

Do you consider yourself a “Marxian”?

“Marxian” is a term used by academics, usually in history, economics, political science, to analyze subjects through class warfare, ie the historical materialist methodology originating from Marx's writings. A Marxian economist, historian, sociologist uses concepts like "surplus value", "class consciousness”, “dialectical materialism" as analytical tools, but they do not necessarily endorse Marx's revolutionary goals or anti-capitalist ideology. Marxians often use the term to avoid being associated with Marxist political activism.
