Hello Reddit Family,

Two years ago, my life was completely different.

I was building my startup, traveling across India on my bike, dreaming big, and working nonstop to build a better future.

Donation Link: https://www.impactguru.com/s/Ii90ou

Today, I’m fighting just to walk again.

My name is Soumya Chakraborty (40M, Kolkata, India).

In January 2023, a car accident changed my life forever.

A severe spinal cord injury left me paralyzed from the waist down.

One day I was running a startup and planning the future.
The next, I was lying in a hospital bed at Fortis Hospital, unable to even sit up on my own.

For 18 months, my life became:

  • hospital rooms
  • physiotherapy
  • pain
  • wheelchairs
  • fear
  • and uncertainty

My startup shut down
I exhausted ₹18,00,000 of savings
I sold assets, liquidated gold & mutual funds
Many friends and colleagues slowly disappeared

And just when I was trying to recover…

life hit me again.

In March 2024, doctors at the Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata diagnosed me with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) — a chronic autoimmune disease attacking my spine.

The disease causes severe pain, stiffness, and progressive immobility.

To prevent my condition from worsening permanently, I now require:

Scapho injections: ₹20,000/month
Physiotherapy: ₹500/session (twice daily)

Without continued treatment, I risk losing even the small recovery progress I’ve fought so hard for.

But through all of this…

one person never gave up on me.

My 70-Year-Old Mother

My father passed away 11 years ago.

My mother — despite her age and fragile health — became my caregiver, nurse, emotional support, and reason to keep fighting.

There were days when I wanted to give up completely.

She refused to let me.

She still works despite being 70, just so my treatment can continue.

Every small improvement I’ve made exists because she stood beside me when life collapsed.

[Life] Before: building startups, traveling, chasing dreams. After: learning how to stand again after a spinal cord injury.

The photo on the left was me before January 2023 - running a gaming startup, traveling across India, and living a fast-moving life full of ambition and movement.

Then a car accident changed everything.

I suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left me bedridden for over a year and largely paralyzed from the waist down. While trying to recover, I was also diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a chronic autoimmune disease attacking my spine.

The middle photos were taken during some of the darkest moments of my life:

  • hospital beds
  • surgeries
  • wheelchairs
  • loss of independence
  • chronic pain
  • watching the life I built disappear

But the last photo means something important to me.

It was the first time in a long time that I could stand briefly again with support during rehab.

I still have a long way to go. Recovery is slow, painful, and uncertain. But after everything, I’m still here. Still trying. Still hoping.

And honestly, that itself feels like a kind of victory.

If you’re rebuilding your life after illness, injury, loss, or failure, I just want to say:
progress doesn’t have to be dramatic to matter.

Sometimes surviving long enough to try again is already strength.

u/Resilient_Hopeful — 14 days ago

Two years ago, I went from building a startup and riding across the Himalayas to being paralyzed from the waist down. Today, I’m still fighting — and learning what resilience really means.

In January 2023, a car accident caused a severe spinal cord injury that left me bedridden for 18 months. Before that, my life was movement — building my gaming startup, traveling, biking through Leh, Meghalaya, Darjeeling.

Then everything stopped.

I lost my mobility.
I shut down my startup.
I exhausted my savings on treatment.
Friends disappeared.

And while I was still trying to recover, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis — a chronic autoimmune disease attacking my spine.

There were days I genuinely wanted to give up.

But one person never let me quit: my 70-year-old mother.

She became my caregiver, my strength, and the reason I kept trying again every morning — even when “progress” meant something as small as sitting upright for a few extra minutes.

Recovery has humbled me.
It taught me that motivation is not loud.
Sometimes motivation is simply:

  • showing up for physiotherapy
  • surviving another painful day
  • trying again after setbacks
  • believing your life still has meaning even when it changes completely

I’m still not where I want to be.
But I’m standing briefly during rehab now.
And after everything, I still believe I’ll walk again someday.

If anyone reading this is going through illness, pain, failure, depression, or rebuilding life from zero — please remember:

You do not have to feel strong every day to keep moving forward.

Sometimes resilience is just refusing to stop.
