Old Cookbooks gifted to me

A patron of my food history classes at the local library gifted me these three great vintage cookbooks.

This is my oldest copy of Joy in my collection (1953). I have never come across the Farm Journal’s Country Cookbook (1972) but it looks like it has some good recipe. And “The I Hate to Cook Book” (1960 ) is also new to me but it looks to be an entertaining book.

I will post more in detail soon with some of these!

ATK Grilled Brined Pork Chops w/ Garlic Herb Oil

I made the Grilled Brined Pork Chop recipe tonight and served it with the Charred Broccoli with Tonnato Sauce. Both were delicious. The brine was great for these thick cut pork chops.

Pyrex Teapot

Everyone made me regret not picking up the teapot that I posted a little while back at an antique store. So I found an even better priced and better quality on Mercari. I am excited to use this for many hot cups of tea. I love the slight blue tint of the glass in person.

ATK Shrimp w/ Lobster Sauce

This was a newly posted 5 star recipe on the app so I decided to try it. Overall it was good and had some good techniques. But as with a lot of ATK recipes I had to bump up the seasoning more. It was good though.

Cleaning out my mom’s house and found this gem from 1971! I can’t wait to go through them!

I think I might make cooking through it a hobby this winter

Andrew Zimmern “The Blue Food Cookbook”

I love seafood cookbooks and heard that this is a good one and has won some awards. I will probably end up getting it but has anyone used it or have it?

Salmon Toasts with Calabrian Chile-Garlic Butter

This was a fun one to make. It was filling but light. I would put slightly less lemon juice in the butter next time. I also love crème frache so used that in place of sour cream and it was a great complement to it.

Opinions on the French Press?

My husband uses a French press and has a basic Amazon glass and plastic one now. I just noticed Le Creuset has one and it’s in the color I have. Any opinions about its use or anyone have it?

“The Can-Opener Cookbook” - 1953 print, Poppy Cannon

As the intro states - “…today the can opener is fast becoming a magic wand, especially in the hands of those brave young women, nine million of them (give or take a few thousand here and there), who are engaged in frying as well as bringing home the bacon”.

This is a gem of a book and one of the most popular of Poppy’s publications. I just chose a few random pages to post recipes.

Paella on the Grill

This is a great summer recipe. It is from Americas Test Kitchen. Just please heed all the warning in the comments for not putting the seafood in until much later in the cooking. I grilled most of the proteins separately and added towards the end.
