Making / partition larger?

I’ve built an Ubuntu 26.04 machine inside VirtualBox. I made the VB storage container too small initially as it turned out, and I’ve expanded the container size to be significantly larger.

The / partition is near or at 100%, and I’d like to expand it if possible rather than burning it down and starting over. I’ve searched the webs, each article seems to describe a different methodology to expand partitions, but not explicitly the / partition.

Any thoughts here? Doable?

Which modem for Xfinity DOCSIS 3.1?

My SB8200 has given up, just as I upped my Xfinity service to gigabit. As there are a lot of options, which modem will perform well and hold up? Another SB8200, or something else?

7.16.2 and now no internet

I have a system with three eero Pros plus one eero Beacon. Has been very stable for years.

This morning two things happened: I updated all units to 7.16.2, and Xfinity turned my service off (there was about an hour between events). My internet service is back on, and a gateway (for a weather station) that is plugged into the second port of the eero gateway is happily uploading data. All of the other eeros are reporting connected. If I run a connectivity test from WiFi, it fails to connect to internet. If I run the connectivity test from cellular, it passes. None of the devices on the WiFi network have internet access.

I’ve tried unplugging the modem for five minutes, and I’m convinced the internet service is working. I’ve power cycled the eero gateway, but haven’t left it unplugged for very long. I did see a couple of periods where all of the eeros were showing down in the app, though they are currently all showing online. It’s curious that an Ethernet connected device on the eero gateway has internet access, but the WiFi devices don’t.

I’m pretty stressed on this, also have run out of ideas. I suppose I could leave the eero gateway power off for 5, 10, however many minutes. Or swap another eero into the gateway position.

Any ideas?

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Doing the soft reset on the gateway revealed a flashing blue light, meaning no upstream internet. I went through several rounds with Xfinity trying to onboard my modem without success, so I pulled out my backup modem and got that provisioned. It took a while for the mesh to sort itself out, but it’s ok now, and I’ll modem shop tomorrow.

Very time consuming and stressful, but eliminating the eero system as a problem made it much easier to troubleshoot.

MacOS: VM or native?

Having RTFM and discovered that containers are not an option on MacOS, I’m debating running HB in a VM vs native on my M1 Mac. I set up a VirtualBox / Ubuntu VM yesterday, and HB runs very well in it, but the VM seems like a lot of overhead for a relatively lightweight service.

Would there be any downside to running HB natively on MacOS? Do MacOS updates impact HB?

Will pods fit in my Bosch dishwasher?

I just bought a bunch of Cascade Actionpac dishwasher pods, and before I open the container, I should ask if the Actionpacs are going to fit into the detergent dispenser of my Bosch dishwasher. Model is SHEAR75UC/24.

Virtual machine or container?

I’ve been running HB for years on bare metal on a series of RPis (currently a 3B) along with Pi-hole, and lately they haven’t been getting along particularly well. Today I built a virtual machine on a Mac M1 in an Ubuntu VM and created a new HB bridge. Very fast, of course.

I’m a bit old fashioned and haven’t done too much with containers, they were starting to become prevalent about the time I stopped working in the industry. The times that I played around with Docker on the Mac, it seemed to consume a lot of resources (particularly RAM), which seemed unnecessary for something as light weight as HB. I have Podman installed, but haven’t done much with it.

Any guidance here?

UPDATE: containers aren’t an option on macOS per HB docs.

Which TP-Link plugin?

I’ve been running the TPLink Smarthome plugin for ages, it’s been ok but has some issues, and the dev has put minimal maintenance into it in recent years. There are several alternatives, including Homebridge Kasa Python, which appears to be maintained.

Recommend a TP-Link plugin?

Long term storage: what level to keep the battery at?

A friend is storing a friend of hers EV for a year. What is the current thinking about what level the battery wants to be? Is 40% reasonable?

She has the option of driving the car occasionally, if that would be helpful to the battery pack.

Issues adding child bridges and getting plugins to forward to HK

Homebridge 2.2.1, running on Debian Trixie and Rpi3, built with the HB image. My primary plugin (and reason for setting up HB years ago) is TPLink Smarthome. That works fine.

There are a couple of nice to have plugins, namely WeatherPlus and PurpleAir or PurpleAir Sensor. Both of these plugins worked prior to the 2.x update. Under 2.x, the plugins run and appear under Accessories, but they don't display climate information in HK. All plugins are Verified and appear to be active (recent updates).

I thought I'd try setting them up under Child Bridges, but I cannot get the Child Bridges to bind to HomeKit. There are a couple of error messages in HK that this generates, but basically the bridges cannot join HK.

I suppose the next step would be to enable debugging in HB, if this is actually a HB issue.

Any other suggestions?

Top takeaway from election: three out of four voters didn’t show up

Only one voter out of four bothered to vote. We’re out of excuses. There were progressives everywhere on the ballot. There were consequential funding measures. And three out of four voters didn’t.

IKEA Grillplats plugs: tracking Matter codes?

I’ve deployed about half a dozen Grillplats plugs, and it’s just occurred to me that there is zero distinguishing information on the plugs, as the Matter codes are on a piece of paper in the box. I’ve saved all of the boxes with the codes in the boxes, but I have no idea which code goes with which device if I ever have to set them up again.

Any suggestions?

And, IKEA, why you do this?

Edit: I’m an idiot, it’s on the plug face. Facepalm.

Updated ATV to 26.6, now HomeKit is showing “updating…” for my HomeBridge accessories.

I updated my ATV hub to tvOS 26.6 today. It may be a coincidence, but now all 26 of my HB accessories are showing “updating…” in HomeKit. I’ve tried switching the active hub to a HomePod, but the issue persists. Rebooting router doesn’t change anything. Restarting HB doesn’t fix it.

Ideas?

UPDATE: I got fed up with screwing around with it, I deleted the bridge and re-added it. Now to recreate all of my automations. Backing up automations would be a nice addition to HK.

Two Sheriff's Office supervisors fired for violating sexual harassment policies

Whatcom detective who created sexual deepfake video of co-worker remains with the force.

A Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office sergeant and his supervising lieutenant were fired for multiple violations of workplace conduct and sexual harassment policies, according to records obtained by Cascadia Daily News.

Many of the violations are directly connected to their handling of a deepfake video of one of their subordinates, Detective Samantha Robinson. However, Detective Derek Jones, who created the artificial-intelligence video of Robinson open-mouth kissing his father, remains on the force.

Sheriff Donnell Tanksley fired Lt. Keith Linderman and Sgt. Courtney Polinder on June 29 following a monthslong outside investigation prompted by a $30 million tort claim filed by Robinson’s lawyer in Whatcom County last October. In an all-employee email on July 6, Tanksley announced the termination of the longtime sheriff’s office leaders but did not detail any of the findings from the investigation.
