Dumb dumb ate dried paint. Shame him! (he's fine)

I've never had a senior ferret suddenly decide to eat things that aren't food! Asmodeus scared me yesterday when I saw what I first thought was blood in his poop. He has IBD so everything's already been touch and go with his stomach. But it was paint! Like when you paint a spot badly and it can just peel off the wall. I have no idea where he go it from! The walls are fine. I'm repainting the bedroom, but he's not allowed in the room when the painting supplies are out and things are still wet. Something must have come off the supplies since it was the same color as my living room I repainted last year. He's now banned from the room until the painting is done.

He's ok! He's pooping fine, eating well, and being a little menace.

Post guidelines now active! A measure to cut down on repetitive posts without outright banning discussion.

There's been a growing problem with repetitive posts that are basically identical to each other. People just aren't checking the subreddit before posting and it's getting annoying. At the same time, I don't want to become a copy of r/ChaiUnofficial that has stricter posting guidelines. This subreddit was made on the basis of not removing posts and comments, barring the rules I already have set up.

I've set up an automation that will prompt users to check the subreddit before posting. I would like it to show up every time, but it works on keywords, so I'm trying to add all the relevant ones. Currently the key words are; greedy, filter, happened, deleted, disappear, disappearing, question, anyone, messages, token, tokens, unlimited, gone, limit, chai. If you have other key words you think should be added to the list, let me know!

If any of those words appear in the title or body of a post the following message will appear;

>It looks like you might be posting about a common issue regarding message limits, the filter, token limits, and other current issues. Please look through the subreddit before posting, and engage with those existing posts instead.

The goal is to push people to comment on existing posts rather than make an identical one. Wording of the message will probably change, but the core of it will stay the same. This does NOT block people from posting, and I am not implementing any stricter posting guidelines.

Poor girl couldn't catch a break!

In the moons that followed, she went completely blind, before peacefully dying of old age. <3 It's always so sad on a new file when clan founders start passing away.

Guys, people pointing out how expensive AI is are not breaking rule 7.

Woke up to a bunch of posts and comments reported under rule 7. All were talking about how expensive AI is to run, or talking about Chai is a business and not a charity, etc. I've seen some suspicion that anyone saying these things is a lurking Chai dev.

A recent article on Chai's new filters had a bit about how everyone was in the office for 12 hours on a Saturday getting the new filters released. There is a tendency to vastly overestimate the time any of them have to lurk on this sub for ways to make things worse. They know we exist, but they have much more important things to do.

AI is expensive. Even big companies like Open AI are losing billions a year. For a smaller company like Chai, that doesn't have the same investor power, staying on top of costs is a lot more difficult. Someone pointing that out isn't an undercover dev or a 'bootlicker'.

Now if someone's saying that while being rude and insulting people, yes, that breaks rules and you can report, or send me a modmail (preferably with a link to the offending post or comment please) for me to take a look. Modmail or a DM gets my attention faster.

There is a lot to criticize chai about already. We don't need to bury our heads in the sand about the cost like it's just Chai being greedy. The decision to use a 'better' LLM that prevents limited free messages for everyone, Will's recent comments being very rude, limited messages not being given out fairly (within the same country, some get 771, some get unlimited, some get none), app features coming and going with no warning, chat deletion isn't following the 14/30 day rule we were told of, and more.

Best way to handle characters that change names throughout the story?

I've got 2 scenarios where a character starts off with 1 name, and shifts to another. In both cases it's leading to problems as the memories get logged with the name being used at the time, so when the name changes, those memories will no longer activate when needed.

Scenario 1 has a baby dragon. His real name isn't known for a little while, so the characters call him Terror. His character card has his real name, Sio, since the vast majority of the story has him with his real name. Once he's called Sio, though, memory cards that listed him as Terror no longer trigger. I've been going through and manually adding Sio to these cards, but I don't know if there's a better method.

Scenario 2 has my character, a genetically engineered monster, as 825. Her character card lists the name 825. She doesn't earn her name Frost till late in the story, but again, once she's being called Frost, stuff doesn't activate properly anymore. If I put her name as Frost, then it'll be the same problem with Sio/Terror, plus the added issue of other characters in the story constantly using a name she shouldn't have yet.

He HATES car rides. To the point of drooling, gagging, and clawing at his mouth if he so much as sees the car. So why is he also obsessed with leaving and going on a car ride??

(He doesn't have insulinoma, he gets his blood sugar checked every few months 'cause he's an old man. So the drooling and mouth clawing isn't from that.)

He looks utterly miserable the entire time we're in the car. He bites at the carrier, drools like he's gone rabid, and looks like he wants to die.

Yet every time his carrier comes out, he will not leave it, until we go somewhere or we put it away (and he has a massive tantrum if I put it away and we never leave). It only comes out when we're leaving, so he knows it means he's going in the car/to the vet.

Last night we had a tornado warning, so we had him in his carrier in the bathroom, waiting it out. Afterwards he's following my husband and I around. He sees my husband grab the car keys to go check on his family, and he races back to the bathroom and goes into the carrier. Any of the other of the hundreds of times we leave, he goes to the front door to try to go with us.

This boy makes no sense. He scared the hell out of me the first time he did it, because he never just lays out in the middle of the living room. I'd just cleaned the carrier and put it back together and hadn't put it away yet. And again, when I took these pictures, I took the carrier out 30min before we left, and he did not walk away from it the entire time, going into it as soon as I put my shoes on and grabbed my keys. It's not a problem, but it does confuse me.

So....how many other USA users stuck at 0?

I'm happy on another platform, but I do check the app every now and then. I've been at 0 for over a month in the USA. No VPN or anything.

Found a tri-color bat (I think?) on my walk yesterday.

Tiny little thing. I only took pictures, and reported to my state's wildlife department since if my ID is correct, they're endangered.

CHAI: Persona Update ℹ️ and Improving Safety 👷‍♂️

We have updated the Chai Apple app with persona and bot-memory and advanced bot-builder tools. We are currently waiting for Apple to approve our latest build so we can release the feature.

AI apps are currently facing extra scrutiny and so the review process is taking longer.

We're still a small team, only 15 engineers, and almost 2 million daily users. But we take all user complaints seriously, and are working hard to build something that is fun, enjoyable and safe.

If you're interested in our safety you can read more here

Please share your thoughts on how we can improve safety at Chai - are the filters too sensitive? Is there anything that isn't filtered but should be? What about 18+ verification?

Will,
Founder

August Discussion Post for Chai Alternatives

Feel free to recommend and discuss your favorite alternatives to Chai here. Comments will still be held to rule 8 (no deceptive advertising/undisclosed affiliation). Posts about, asking for, or showcasing alternatives will be removed and directed here.

In the wake of some scammy apps I was given a list of questions by u/ Ok-Aide-3120 to vet the devs of other apps. If you're advertising for an app, giving the following details would be helpful;

  1. A very transparent approach. Details on what model they use (none of them use "proprietary models", unless they somehow stumbled upong 1.5 million dollars for training), what quant, is it self hosted or API.
  2. if it's a mobile apps, what are the permissions required for the device, with proof of said permissions.
  3. where is the data stored? What are the logging policies? If they are using API, what is the logging policy of the API and what service aggregator/router are they using.
  4. What security framework are they using for their platform? Since they are all vibecoded anyway, details from Claude/GPT/Gemini/etc., regarding security framework following the development.
  5. A clear and concise plan for monetizing. There is no such thing as free AI, so they all plan to roll out some form of payment asap. There needs to be a clear plan on what they want to monetize on and how. Terms like "better chats and better memory" for payment plan is bullshit. Concrete explanation what is gained and how they plan to balance paying users vs free users (free users cost money). Ads for free users is acceptable, but there needs to be an explanation who is the add provider (most likely google ad sense, but you never know what scammy ass provider these people chose).

For users just looking for a new app, if a dev hasn't provided the above information, it's recommended you ask them, and if they won't or can't answer, that's your warning to stay away.

A new community has been started to help people find alternative to Chai! Check out r/ChaiAlternatives and share your favorite one there!

The stupidest thing that ever triggered a migraine for you?

I'm in the postdrome phase of one of the worst migraines I've had in years, and I got it in the stupidest way ever. When I get startled, it hurts. It's usually a burst of pain in my chest, that radiates out to my limbs to my fingers and toes then reflects back up. My husband is pulling out of a gas station parking lot, and hits a spot of damp gravel, making this awful screech sound. I got that painful burst of panic, but this one also included a shock of pain through the left side of my head.

That shock of pain turned into a level of pain I haven't felt in years within a few hours. My migraines are mostly an issue of the other symptoms (depression, fatigue, brain fog, etc.) instead of pain, but this one had me writhing in bed, sobbing, with a rubbing alcohol soaked paper towel to keep the nausea at bay long enough for meds to work. All because of a patch of wet gravel....

So what's the stupidest thing that triggered a migraine for you?

Older ferret with chronic GI issues getting very picky with his food. He'll readily eat Carnivore Care, but has not eaten his regular food since Monday morning. He sees the vet tomorrow afternoon, just looking to hear from others owners who've dealt with something similar.

He's 5 years old and has had chronic GI issues for years. A couple weeks ago he was put on a prednisolone trial to see if that helped. Initially it did. He ate like crazy and had no diarrhea or clear mucusy stools. Within a few days of tapering down it got bad again, and since then he will not eat his normal food. He's back to twice daily pred and getting Carnivore Care every few hours during the day, and once in the middle of the night.

Gave him 1/4 of a tablet of cerenia yesterday afternoon with no improvement.

He's on Stella and Chewy's FDR turkey and rabbit. He'll stash the nuggets but isn't eating them (got him to eat 1 after covering it in coconut oil, but I obviously can't do that all the time).

He'll eat a treat of a FDR quail chick, so I don't think it's a dental issue where he doesn't want to chew. He doesn't have any problems when getting his teeth brushed either.

He hasn't really been playful in about a week, but he's still active, following my husband and I around, 'helping' with whatever I'm doing, and restashing his toys. Bloodwork was done recently and there weren't any problems and the only thing found on an ultrasound was a small kidney cyst.

Got hit with a blast of heat opening my bedroom closet. The access hatch to the crawl space is falling off.

Top floor apartment in the midst of a heatwave. I think I know at least part of the reason why my place won't cool below 80F.

It feels impossible to get rid of parasites. I had my fish in quarantine for months, with multiple rounds of parasite treatment, and they still made it to my main tank. What more can I do?

I'm at a complete loss for internal parasites in my guppies. Earlier this year I euthanized every guppy I had over issues with parasites and some mystery infection that nothing cured. I tried every antiparasitic on the market and nothing worked. I made my own antiparasite food, I've bought premade food. I treated the water column. I combined treatments. Literal years doing everything I could and nothing worked.

I got new guppies, and they were in quarantine for 3 months. They had 2 rounds of an antiparasitic food with fenbendazole. I euthanized 2 black bar endler girls that weren't gaining wait within the first couple weeks. The 3rd seemed ok. She never got as plump as I wanted, but never got underweight and was dropping healthy fry. It took 5 months for any visible signs of parasites to show up.

My second bunch, 2 pairs of purple tigers, were in quarantine for 2 months. They also got the fenbendazole food. All 4 adults are healthy weight and not showing any signs of parasites.

Some adults in the main tank are having stringy white poop. That 3rd endler girl and a blue grass girl were losing substantial weight and I just had to put them down. Other juvenile males are starting to look skinny. In both my current guppies and my previous ones, once they start losing weight, they won't eat. They might pick at food, but they always spit it back out.

In the quarantine tank with about 40 purple tiger fry, a handful are having prolapses and stringy white poop.

So I'm doing another round of fenbendazole food and treating the water column with metronidazole and praziquantel. I am so tired. I don't know what more to do. I thought I did enough this time to have a healthy bunch of guppies, and I'm back to euthanizing them and watching them waste away.

Is there a hunger mod that stops the little tantrums from happening?

I prefer to let my chao feed themselves. But they don't do that often enough to keep their hunger low and the constant crying tantrums is annoying. Keeping them fed up becomes the bulk of what I do in the garden if I want to keep them full enough that they don't cry. Is there a mod that stops this? I don't care how it goes about it. I just want the tantrums gone.

Week old purple tiger fry struggling

(excuse the snails, I breed them for my turtle) This is my quarantine tank. All adults were moved out to the main tank a week ago shortly after one of my girls had her second batch of fry. There seem to be some problems with them, including some being very tiny. They're not growing well, and a couple, like the one in the video are struggling to swim normally.

Tank is 10 gallons with a sponge filter, at 80F. It's been running for about 10 months. Ammonia is 0. Nitrite is 0. Nitrate is 10-15ppm. 20% water change weekly. Fry are fed powdered bloodworms, tubifex worms, mysis shrimp, daphnia, or blackworms once a day.
