Why don’t lit mags use a standard format for submission?

Why does every lit journal have their own very specific guidelines on how something is formatted. And why are they so strict about it?

When you’re an unknown writer and you’re submitting you have to submit to tons of places. It’s a numbers game. It just is. So why make that more time consuming than it needs to be. Submitting the work for review for publication should be the smallest part of the job in my opinion.

Would it not be so much easier if everyone used the same standard submission header and such?

Tweaking work to please publishers?

So I just got a rejection slip for a flash fiction horror piece. They were kind enough to attach the votes and comments of the voters on the email so I could see what they thought. There were three votes from what I could see. 2 voted yes and 1 voted maybe. There were no no’s so I’m assuming someone else must have gotten 3 straight yes’s.

The person who left the maybe was confused by a detail I included in the story. Now the detail was there for a reason (as everything has to be in flash) but they didn’t get what I was trying to convey. If you think a story is close would you tweak something to please editors to get published? Especially if it’s a small detail? Or would you hold on on your vision, try others and risk further rejection.

Help with accepting on submittable

I just got my first ever acceptance for a piece of writing (after like 12 rejections lol) for a Toronto based literary magazine called White Wall Review.

They gave me a week to respond and that week ends tomorrow. I waited until Friday to hit accept just in case it got any others within the week, but then I realized I have no idea how to actually accept in the first place. Can anyone help?

There is a reply button on submittable to which I did send them one saying how appreciative I was and how I’d like to accept their publication but I wasn’t sure how to do so. They haven’t replied to that yet and with one day left I’m kinda panicking.

Submission mistake

Hi, I’m a new writer and I was using submittable and came across a call from streetlit magazine for a poetry competition that costs 25$ to enter. I was rishi because it said the deadline was in 15 minutes and I misread the specifications. I thought I could send a 3 poem packet to be considered but I believe they want you to send each poem individually for a separate fee. Normally I don’t like to do submissions with fees but I felt it really matched my work, so I did it anyways. My question is, will they just toss it out even though I paid a fee to be considered because I didn’t follow the guidelines? Is there a way to rectify this? By email or something?

Does you sitcom pilot HAVE to start in the middle.

Currently trying to write a sitcom where the first episode is an inciting incident that brings the main character to a new world (with faces that are familiar to him so it’s not entirely new) but the show doesn’t really get to the “endless middle” till episode 3 in my head currently. Episode 1 is brining to the new world episode 2. Is trying to adjust to it 3. Finding his permanent place for the series.

Is this a mistake?

Think there’s a chance she comes back?

I cared deeply for this girl. She broke up with me because I accidentally forgot to introduce her to this woman that came up to me and started talking for 30 seconds. After like a month long avoidance she finally gave me closure (kind of)

She said it awakened something that made her realize she’s not really over someone else and that she just needs to be alone

Then she thanked me for always being so kind to her and said she’s grateful for the time we spent together and that she was sorry she hurt me and that she was hurting herself and she hopes I find someone who deserves all the love I have

This thing is eating away at me

So me(24m) and this girl(20f) have been seeing each other exclusively for almost 2 months sexually. A little over 3 weeks ago we decided to make it an official relationship but then she broke up with me a little over 2 weeks later. But just a couple days later and she wanted to reconnect but keep things less complicated as “friends with benefits” which I don’t want but didn’t want to lose her entirely so I agreed.

She’s invited me over every single night and we don’t just have sex, we cuddle a lot , fall asleep together, she tells me things like “she misses me” and “this is my favorite place” when she’s wrapped up in my arms”, and “I feel so safe with you while cuddling. But then she’ll remind me once in a while that we’re just friends and wants me to explore other women too.

Am I dramatic for thinking that this can’t be just friends for me and it’s actually incredibly painful this situation we’ve been in and 99% of the time it feels like more.

Gave my girlfriend(?) a false impression of who I am. Where do I go from here?

So I kinda had a weird life that messed up my social skills pretty significantly. I took hockey very seriously growing up. So seriously that I essentially completely missed high school because of it. I played this thing called "juniors" which you get drafted for and you leave home at 16 until you are 20 to play in these ultra competitive semi pro leagues and then at the end you go to college and play college hockey starting at 21. For most people that's really weird, but for hockey players it is fairly standard.

But essentially all I did my entire teen life was do online schooling and train for hockey. I was a pretty well functioning social kid up through middle school, but I've become incredibly awkward and scared of social situations and never had any relationships all through this time before college. Even on tinder I'd talk to a girl but any time it got to meeting up I'd just find an excuse not to. By the time I actually got to college I thought it'd be better, but I already felt so weird and behind adding on to that I was a 21 year old freshman, and it wasn't any better. Hockey, school, home repeat for 3 1/2 years.(I did have a long distance relationship during this time that I met up with in person a handful of times for maybe 10 day stretches but we spent essentially every night just talking on the phone).

Then this really pretty, talented, smart girl comes up to me in a class and starts making moves on me and I'd had a crush on her for a long time tbh, so this kinda seemed like a fantasy. It seemed like she had this idea in her head of who I was. I supposed she found me really smart and attractive and with me being on the hockey team she thought I was some really cool experienced womanizer or something. Being ashamed of who I really was and thinking if she knew then she wouldn't want me, I played into it and let her believe that's who I was.

This started two months ago. We immediately became exclusive and intimate (sleeping together just about every single night), but she became really freaked out any time labels or anything were brought up and would immediately end things when feelings started getting "too real" as she would put it. Then she would tell me two days later that she missed me and we would get right back together.

I never pushed the boyfriend/girlfriend label because I didn't want to scare her off until one day about 3 weeks ago, she actually asked me "when are you going to make me your girlfriend", so I thought she was past all that and we started officially dating, and she was so incredibly happy about it. Then she broke up with me two weeks later for a really superficial mistake (I posted about it like a week ago if you check my profile) and then a few days later we kinda made up, but we went back to being "fwb" because it was less complicated for her. I actually hate it so much because I really care about her and like her and want to be with her.

But she keeps pressuring me to see other women too. So this morning while we were in bed before she had to leave to go home and visit her parents for a few days I came clean and told her that I might have exaggerated my experience with other women. Then her guard went up pretty immediately, so I started explaining the situation with juniors and my awkwardness and how I'd only been with two other women and that I didn't want her to think I was lame and stuff. She was absolutely put off by the whole thing. She was upset that I lied to her and said I shouldn't have done that. I told her that I didn't want to lie and I felt bad about it but didn't know how to stop once it started but I wanted it to stop now. She told me she has to leave and that I should go. I told her I understand. Then she did give me a hug and told me I should probably be experimenting with girls. I told her I'll probably just have to wait until someone else needs to charge her laptop and she smiled and said that was corny. I told her "maybe I'm just corny, but it's also true." and we hugged and I said have a nice trip and left. We haven't had contact since, but she was definitely upset that I lied to her.

I (24m) have been officially dating this girl (20f) for about 3 weeks but we've been seeing each other other exclusively for almost 2 months almost every single night. It's been a little tough because she's had some rough relationships in the past (that I do not have much detail on other than being cheated on and potentially even some abuse).

We go to college together and she is an acting bfa major and I am a creative writing major (I tell you this because it kind of matters). She has a friend that does musical theater and dance and it's the end of the semester, so we decide (along with her best female friend) to go see this performance.

The dances are all based on poetry that had been selected as inspiration from students. Being a creative writing major I happen to know one of the girls whose poetry was selected. We know each other on a first name basis as we've had several classes together over the last year or so, but we don't know each other well enough to have each other's phone numbers or anything and I have certainly never felt a desire to know this person any further than the surface level I already do. She also is in a fairly committed and serious relationship with someone and from what she has said in various classes it seems like they plan to move in together back near her home town 12 hours away when they graduate next week.

But of course this girl is also going to see the performance because her work is featured in it (not that I realized she'd be going in the first place). I get to the theater with my girlfriend and her best friend and we sit down by ourselves (it wasn't very crowded) and wait for it to start. This other girl sees me come in and runs over to me, taking me by surprise, to tell me a story about how several members of the hockey team (which I am a member of so this is why she decided to tell me) got into a fight with several members of the soccer team. I'd never talked with this girl outside of class before, but I humored her story and basically told her I didn't know anything about it, but I'm sure my teammates started it and she left and rejoined her boyfriend (who was also in attendance a few rows away).

I thought nothing of it and turned to my girlfriend to ask her a question about the performers (since she knows most of them from acting) and she was not having it at all. I was confused but tried again with a different topic to which she told me to stop talking to her. I asked her what was wrong and she told me to "figure it out". I thought it was to do with the interaction that had just occurred and I tried to explain it but she told me "not here we're about to watch a performance" and shut me down immediately.

She spent the rest of the 2 hour (possibly a little longer) performance completely ignoring me and exchanging little comments with her friend about what was happening with the dances and such. It gave me plenty of time to think about the situation and I felt like an idiot for not introducing my girlfriend and I tried multiple times throughout the performance to apologize for it, including during a 15 minute intermission where she again completely shut me down and didn't say another word to me. Needless to say I felt like complete shit the entire time and hated it.

After the performance we waiting around in the lobby for her friend to come out so she could tell him how good he did. During this time, much of the audience members were bfa majors that she knew, so she went around mingling with the other students/friends she knew while I just awkwardly stood off to the side by myself because I didn't know anyone and still very much felt like shit. We go to leave eventually and her and her best friend are talking about the performance together and joking about other things while both completely ignoring me while we drive back to her apartment. Then when we get there she accuses me of flirting with this other woman and making her feel like shit, so which I said I was absolutely not flirting with her (and who would when my literal girlfriend is sitting right next to me) and I was just not thinking and I was sorry and it wouldn't happen again (this was the first time anything like this had occurred so there's no reason to think it's an empty promise), but she told me she was done with this and was breaking up with me. and (shamefully) I basically begged her not to breakup with me for a good long while before finally realizing there was no changing her mind and left.

Then about an hour later, she sends me a text "do you want your leftovers?" to which I replied almost a day later with "You need them more than I do" and she replied back with "okay I just wanted to check" and I said "ok" and she read it and hasn't responded since.

Why would she send me that text? What do you think? was this breakup worthy? and if not, what should I do? Nothing I guess?

Then about an hour later, she sends me a text "do you want your leftovers?" to which I still haven't responded to the next day because that seems like an odd thing to text someone after you break up with them.

Why would she send me that text? What do you think? was this breakup worthy? and if not, what should I do? Nothing I guess?
