Berlin to break ground this year on converting Tegel airport into a 5,000 unit mass timber TOD. (Schumacher Quartier)

Berlin is breaking ground this year on Schumacher Quartier, a 5,000+ home mixed use neighborhood being built on the former grounds of Tegel Airport. The neighborhood will have a car free interior, with around 35 to 40% of the housing being subsidized to help combat gentrification and displacement, along with 10% dedicated to student housing. The master plan also includes two schools, six daycare centers, and extensive green space. The residential buildings will primarily use timber construction to reduce embodied carbon. https://schumacher-quartier.de/

Why do you think education has struggled in Oklahoma?

My own theory is that Oklahoma’s historical reliance on oil and natural gas has played a role. States heavily dependent on one industry seem to struggle with education. West Virginia with coal, Nevada with tourism, New Mexico with fossil fuels, etc.
Maybe industries that don’t require as much higher education create less incentive to pursue it, which becomes a cycle.
As Oklahoma diversifies into aerospace, biotech, technology, research, advanced manufacturing, etc., maybe that creates more demand for an educated workforce and helps break the cycle.
But that’s just my theory. What do you think is the biggest reason Oklahoma has consistently ranked near the bottom in education?

Metros that offer dense walkable suburbs

I’m aware that most U.S. metros become pretty car dependent outside the urban core. Which metros actually have suburbs with decent density, walkability, and mixed use development instead of typical suburban sprawl?

Which city might have more sprawl? Dallas or Phoenix?

I heard of people talking about both having the most sprawl in different ways. But to users who’ve been around both. Which sprawl felt more inescapable. Or is there another city with just as much sprawl out there worth discussing?

Not a bottom 10 state anymore. How in the hell?

I’m used to seeing us news rank Oklahoma a bottom 10 state every year, so seeing them higher than 40 suprised me a bit. Still a very long way to go for education and healthcare though.

Despite football being the overwhelming favorite sport in Missouri and Oklahoma, these two states punch above their weight in soccer production.

A reminder that housing crises are policy choices. China deliberately popped its own $500B real estate bubble because "houses are for living in, not for speculation."

Why is the general population of Oklahoma so Apolitical?

Only 26 percent of registered voters voted on June 16th. I knew multiple people who talked about how we need to vote yes on SQ832. Only for these same people to forget weeks later, there was even a vote, or just use the "too busy" or "I don't feel like voting after a long day" excuse. I even knew some who said they would vote yes but didn't go to the polls because they would rather just watch the World Cup and cook at home after work. Where is the urgency? Do people really just think "can't do much, things are just how they are"?

Arrowhead is built for the best sports atmosphere in the world and it’s not close.

I saw the sound meter hit 128 db during the pregame introduction for Argentina vs Algeria.

If it was that deafening before kickoff, I cannot comprehend the noise level when Messi scored his hat trick. When that final goal went in, the stadium must have shattered the Richter scale.
We already hold the world record in sports, but seeing that same energy translate to the World Cup stage is unreal. No other venue on earth matches Arrowhead.

England could face its latest kickoff time ever.

I noticed that if England tops group L and wins their round of 32 match against a team that placed third in their group. England will be facing a 1:00 am BST kickoff in Mexico City.
Destroying my sleep schedule will be worth it though.
