[1967] Strawberry Fields - The Beatles (Earth-TREE3)
On August 29, 1966, The Beatles ended their 1966 US Tour in Candlestick Park. They had decided to stop touring, due to the chaos brought by their two '66 tours, not being able to hear themselves play due to the crowd, and their music becoming more and more experimental.
The Beatles went on to do their own things. John went go film Richard Lester's How I Won the War, Paul experimented with tapes, George studied sitar with Ravi Shankar, and Ringo spent time with his family. While working on HIWTW, John came up with a song that he originally titled It's Not Too Bad, with the lyric "No one's in my wavelength". The lyrics would be written and revised from there, becoming Strawberry Fields Forever.
The band reconvened in the studio in November to record Strawberry Fields Forever, and a song written by Paul, Penny Lane, for their next single. However, Paul's perfectionism kept getting the better of him as he kept booking studio time for extra overdubs to Penny Lane, delaying the singles release. At that same time, The Beatles became planning their grand follow up to Revolver: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
A loose concept album about the band performing under an alter ego, the album was said to be so magnificent, it put ███████ to shame. The band recorded many tracks which received many overdubs. One song, A Day in the Life, combined two songs from John and Paul into one masterpiece.
Multiple songs were finished and the Strawberry Fields Forever b/w Penny Lane was due to release in April 1967. However, five days before the singles release, Paul McCartney turned on his radio to hear The Beach Boys latest single: Hereos and Villains. After hearing that it was from the band's new album SMiLE, Paul rushed to the nearest record ship to buy a copy. After listening, Paul called up George Martin, reportable saying "They've done it! They've bloody fuckin' done it!"
The Beach Boys had released SMiLE a couple days earlier. Although a major hit in the UK, staying at #1 until it was beaten out by ███████ in December, it was less of a success in the US, although it would later receive a cult following, and is now seen as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Paul quickly booked more studio time to work on the album. The other Beatles started to get worried about Paul's mental state, and in May basically forced him to take a little vacation. When he got back, Paul would make the announcement that Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was cancelled.
Sgt. Peppers has become an often talking about subject for music nerds, often being touted as "the greatest album that was never released". Many people have tried to make reconstructions of what they believe the album would have looked like. Some of the tracks would end up on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack in 1969. In 2004, Paul McCartney would release Paul McCartney Presents Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which contained rerecordings of tracks meant for the album. In 2011, The Sgt. Pepper Sessions box set was released, containing multiple discs of outtakes meant for the album.
Still wanting to use the songs they've written, The Beatles came up with the idea of doing more lo-fi layed back album to soothe their nerves. Some songs, like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (renamed Which Dreamed It?) and A Day in the Life used stripped back studio recordings, others, like When I'm Sixty-Four and Piggies were rerecorded over at John's home in Kenwood, while the rest, like Lazy Day, All Together Now, In Littletown, and I Will were brand new. The Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane single was also going to be put on this new album. One song, entitled The Candle Burns, was not originally meant to be put on the album, but John, feeling cheeky, decided to stick at the end unmarked to "scare the shit out of people". This would come to be recognized as the first hidden track.
Strawberry Fields was released in the UK on September 3, 1967, and on September 18 in the US. The album received mix reviews, with critics saying they album felt unfinished and unpolished. Some critics began to pose the question of whether The Beatles had truly lost their mark
Fortunately, they were wrong.
