Disability Support Group recognizing "Self-diagnosis"
I belong to a Disability Support group in my province.
At the last meeting, one of the coordinators said, "We also recognize self diagnosis as a valid form of diagnosis".
I don't know if this is part of a disability rights movement or something, but it made me pretty uncomfortable.
It isn't that I don't want to be inclusive, but I don't feel like self diagnosis is a evidence-based form of diagnosis. You can totally suspect you have something, or be investigating the possibility of having something, but unless you have a medical/graduate psychology degree, you don't have the expertise to definitively diagnose yourself.
Am I being unreasonable by thinking this self diagnosis support will just lead to fakers taking advantage of the support provided by the group?
