Men who married under 30 - what was your salary, net worth & wedding cost?

Disclaimer: I know this sub has strong opinions on marriage 😅. I’d genuinely appreciate it if we could keep the discussion focused on the financial aspects of the question. I’m not looking for “don’t get married” or “marriage is a financial mistake” answers just real experiences from people who actually went through it.

I 27M, currently earning around 1.4lpm. I have negligible savings right now due to family responsibilities in the past, but I am debt-free.

My parents have been encouraging me to get married, and I am also considering marriage through the arranged marriage route. I am not planning to get married immediately , I’d want to build a reasonable financial cushion and feel financially secure first.

So, I’d love to hear from men who got married around 27–29:

- What was your salary & net worth when you married?

- How much did the wedding cost?

- Who funded it - you, your parents, or both?

- If you kept the wedding relatively simple, how did you convince your family?

- If it wasnt kept simple, how did you fund it?

Arranged marriage experiences especially welcome, but love marriages are welcome too.

Why is it so hard to spend money when you grew up without it?

I (27M) come from a middle/lower-middle-class family where money was always about survival be it food, bills, EMIs, debt, necessities. Spending on yourself was almost never an option.

4 years ago, I was earning 40–45k per month. I used to think, “Once I earn more, I will travel, eat better, buy things I want and actually enjoy life.”

Today, I earn around 1.4lpm

And somehow, I am still living like I am earning 40K.

My personal expenses are only around 26–28K/month, and even then I constantly hesitate to spend on myself. I keep depriving myself of better food, experiences, travel, things I have wanted for years.

Even when I can afford something, my brain immediately says, “You dont need this. Save the money You have responsibilities like Medical Emergency, Marriage in 2 years etc”

A lot of my income has gone into clearing family/personal debt and trying to build financial security. Somewhere along the way, I feel like I lost the person who used to have all those dreams.

My life has basically become: work → room → work → sleep → repeat. Weekends are often just lying in bed, scrolling, watching things, and doing nothing.

I am curious about people who came from a similar background:

-Did you also struggle to move from survival mode to actually enjoying your money once you started earning well?

-How did you learn to spend without feeling guilty or irresponsible? How did you decide what was okay to spend on yourself?

I'd especially love to hear from people who have gone through this transition themselves.

First Solo International Trip -Where Should I Go Under ₹1.5–1.8L?

Hey everyone! I am 27M and planning my first-ever solo international trip. I have never travelled solo before, so I am looking for somewhere safe, easy to navigate, and fun for a young solo traveller.

Budget: ₹1.5L, can stretch to ~₹1.8L all-inclusive.

I initially thought of Japan/China, but they seem difficult in this budget. I’m considering Singapore, Malaysia, Bali or Dubai. I’m not particularly keen on Vietnam or Thailand

I am also ok to tag along with a group tour have geard about Waderon but not sure.

I’d love to visit somewhere that feels worth doing while I’m young, rather than something I can easily do later in life.

Would love recommendations from people who’ve done a similar trip - where did you go, what was your itinerary, and how much did it cost?

How do I tell my parents that my job isnt whats making me stressed?

27M. I dont really know why I am writing this. Maybe I just need to get this off my chest.

I have always tried to do the "right" thing. In five years of working, I have worked extremely hard, substantially increased my income, and cleared around ₹10 lakh of family loans. My income is decent—not extraordinary—but I have always tried to be responsible.

Yet lately, the pressure feels unbearable.

Its not really my job. Work has its normal pressures, but it's manageable. The real pressure is everything outside of it: marriage, career, money, my parents' future, what happens next, whether I'm financially secure enough, and whether I'm doing enough.

One of my parents has a serious chronic illness, and growing up with that has affected me more than I realised. I have been anxious about the future since I was a kid. A part of me has been living in survival mode for years, constantly thinking about the next problem and the next responsibility.

I can afford things now that I couldn't afford before. I could take that bucket-list trip I've been planning for months. But instead, my brain says, "Why spend this money? You should be saving. You don't know what the future holds."

My parents have started noticing that I'm stressed and that I've been having health issues. They assume it's because of my job and keep telling me to quit or find something less stressful.

But how do I explain that the job isn't the problem?

I don't really have anyone I can talk to about all of this. I've spent years just carrying things quietly and being the responsible son.

Being the eldest also makes it harder. I sometimes look at my siblings and feel like they have the freedom to just live, while I'm constantly thinking about responsibilities and the future.

And then theres the comparison. People my age(especially my rich cousins) seem to be ahead—earning more, saving lakhs or even crores, travelling, building their lives. Meanwhile, I feel like I've spent my 20s just fulfilling one responsibility after another.

I have dreams too. I want to travel. I want to enjoy my life. I want to build something for myself. But time feels like its slipping away, and I constantly feel guilty for wanting anything for myself.

I'm honestly exhausted from always having one anxiety replaced by another.

I don't really know what I'm looking for by posting this. Maybe advice. Maybe someone who has gone through something similar. Or maybe I just needed somewhere to write all of this down.

I just want to know how to stop living like I'm constantly preparing for the next disaster.

TL;DR: My parents think my job is making me stressed and want me to quit. But the real issue is years of anxiety, family responsibilities, financial insecurity, marriage pressure, and constantly worrying about the future. I don't know how to explain this to them—or how to stop living in survival mode.

Dermat prescribed retinal routine but no moisturizer. Is that common for oily skin?

27M with oily/combination skin.

I recently visited a dermatologist for mild blackheads/sebaceous filaments on my nose and pigmented lips. I was prescribed:

AM:

Bioderma Atoderm Gel Douche

Truderma Duo Day Defence Serum

UV Doux Sunscreen

PM:

Bioderma Face Wash

Truderma Duo Night Intense Serum (Retinal 0.1%)

Alternate nights

IBGLO Ultra for lips

I'm not asking for a routine, just trying to understand one part of the prescription.

My dermatologist didn't prescribe a moisturizer. Today was my first night using the retinal serum, and my skin feels slightly tight (not irritated).

My skin is naturally very oily, especially the T-zone, and I usually wake up with a shiny nose.

For those who've used retinal or have oily skin:

1)Is it common for dermatologists to skip a moisturizer initially? What about sandwich method?

2)Did you wait until you experienced dryness before adding one, or did you use one from day one?

3)Is this routine enough to improve blackheads/open pores on the nose, or would I eventually need something like a 2% salicylic acid product?

People who daily-drive mesh sneakers... how are they still alive? 😭

I keep seeing recommendations for sneakers like the ASICS Gel-1130, New Balance 530, Puma P-6000, etc., and they all have mesh uppers.

My biggest fear is the mesh. Every mesh shoe I have owned eventually tore, and once the mesh goes, the shoe is basically done.

For those of you who wear these daily, how long do they actually last? Is the mesh on these premium sneakers significantly tougher? Are they still going strong after 2–3 years?

Asking because my daily walk is basically an obstacle course. Indian roads demand hiking boots disguised as sneakers , broken footpaths, dust, random gravel, surprise potholes..and sometimes I feel all thats missing is a river crossing. 😂

Salary Rs.1.4LPM. Looking for suggestions to optimize my credit card portfolio.

Current cards:

HDFC Millennia (LTF)

SBI Cashback (all online purchases where there's no instant discount)

Airtel Axis (utility bills + Airtel recharge)

ICICI Amazon Pay (offline spends like pharmacy/hospital, Amazon purchases when applicable)

Jupiter Edge CSB Plus (Amazon Pay vouchers, Flipkart, and other voucher-based spends)

Monthly spends:

Rent via UPI (PG, so no credit card option)

₹15k–25k/month at pharmacies & hospitals (parents use my card)

₹10k–12k every 2 months on Indigo flights back home

For flights, I usually book directly on Indigo using SBI Cashback (or via Goibibo/MMT if the discount is better).

I'm planning my first international trip (likely Dubai) later this year and expect to travel more going forward.

Need suggestions on:

A good card for domestic + international lounge access.

A better card for pharmacy/hospital offline spends.

A better option for recurring Indigo flight bookings.

Is there anything in my current portfolio that's redundant or worth replacing?

Thanks!

Can I Finally Afford My First Bucket-List Trip?

Need a quick reality check.

I am planning a Dubai trip with the Palm skydive by the end of this year (estimated cost ~₹1.8lakh). Its been a bucket-list dream, but in 5 years of working I have never spent on myself or taken an international trip because I was always in survival mode.

Current finances:

- In-hand salary: ₹1.4L/month

- Savings: ₹75–85k/month

- 6-month emergency fund in place

- ₹1L invested in mutual funds.
Apart from this no other savings.

Can I realistically afford this trip by Oct/Nov, or would it be financially irresponsible? If you were in my position, would you do it?

Why am I so bothered by an old school friend unfollowing me on Instagram?

I am 26M, and generally keep a small Instagram circle , mostly people I have known personally.

Recently, I noticed that an old school friend—someone who was quite close to me growing up—had unfollowed me and also removed me from her followers. We haven't been in touch for years, so logically it shouldn't matter. Yet I cant stop thinking about it.

What confuses me is that shes still connected with several other schoolmates she was never particularly close to, while she chose to remove me. It feels oddly personal, even though we haven't spoken since around 5 yrs.

Part of me wants to send a follow request and reconnect. Another part feels that if she removed me intentionally, I should respect that and move on.

Am I being immature for overthinking such a small social media thing? Would you send a follow request, ignore it, or just let it go?

Is 17 LPA to 30 LPA in 6 Months — Unrealistic or Achievable? What Should My Next Career Move Be?

I have 4.5YOE and currently working at Amazon as a BIE. My current in-hand is ~1.4lpm (includes joining bonus), with a base salary of 17LPA and around 12L worth of RSUs still left to vest over the coming years.

My work is primarily around SQL, ETL, dashboards, and analytics, with some exposure to AI-related initiatives. I've also worked with Power BI, can navigate AWS, and I'm currently learning dbt with plans to pick up Snowflake next.

I'm trying to figure out the smartest next step:

- Aim for an internal Data Engineer transition/promotion at Amazon (likely 2–3 years)?

- Look for external opportunities in analytics/data?

- Is a jump from 17 LPA to 30 LPA within the next 6 months realistic given my background?

My priorities are strong compensation growth, good flexibility/work-life balance, and product companies over service-based firms.

Would appreciate honest feedback from people who've been in a similar position.

Trip/Trek in July – Need Suggestions

Hi everyone,

Planning my first solo trip in the 2nd/3rd week of July (around 7 days, can extend if needed). Based in Maharashtra, budget isn't a constraint, and I'm happy to fly anywhere in India.

I was considering Hampta Pass, but the crowds have put me off. KGL is unfortunately not an option this year.

Looking for a place with breathtaking scenery, relatively less crowded, beginner-friendly, and ideal for unwinding. Trek recommendations are welcome, but I'm open to non-trek destinations too.

I am also open to tag along group trips.

What would you recommend for a first solo trip in India during July?

Hospital Charging Far More Than Cashless Approval – Is This Normal or Am I Being Overcharged?

My mom recently underwent a varicose veins surgery. Before the procedure, the hospital gave us an estimated bill of around ₹67,000. We applied for cashless insurance, and the insurer approved approximately ₹52,000.

My understanding was that the approved amount would cover the surgery package (including the procedure and one day of room charges), except for any non-payable items or policy exclusions. I also understand that some out-of-pocket expenses are normal.

However, at the time of discharge, the hospital presented a total bill of about ₹92,000. Since only ₹52,000 was approved under cashless, they are asking us to pay nearly ₹40,000 from our own pocket.

A few things are confusing me:

  1. How did the bill increase from the original estimate of ₹67,000 to ₹92,000 without any prior intimation?

  2. The policy has a 15% co-pay clause. If the insurer is already applying the co-pay deduction while settling the claim, why am I being asked to pay such a large additional amount to the hospital?

  3. I requested an itemized/detailed bill, but the hospital has only provided a summary bill and says that's the only bill they can share.

  4. The hospital staff are not clearly explaining the difference between the approved amount, co-pay, non-payables, and the final amount being charged.

Is it normal for a hospital bill to increase this much after cashless approval, or is this something I should challenge? Can a hospital refuse to provide an itemized bill? What would be the best way to handle this situation without getting into a major dispute?

Any advice from people who have dealt with cashless health insurance claims would be greatly appreciated.

26, moderate-high risk appetite. Review my MF allocation for long-term investing and emergency fund goals

I am a 26 yo with a moderate to high risk appetite. I have attached my current SIP allocation and would appreciate feedback on whether my overall strategy makes sense.

Long-term SIPs (wealth creation)

Parag Parikh Flexi Cap – 10,000

Tata Small Cap – 2,500

HDFC Nifty 50 Index – 2,500

HDFC Gold ETF FoF – 2,500

My intention is to stay invested in these funds for the long term (10+ years). I dont expect to touch this money anytime soon.

Short-term / Emergency Fund Goal

Over the next 1-2 years, I expect significant expenses, particularly:

Marriage-related expenses

Building and maintaining a large emergency fund.

For that reason, I have also started:

Kotak Arbitrage Fund – 15,000

Axis Liquid Fund Direct – 10,000

The idea is to continue these SIPs until I reach my target emergency fund amount, after which I will stop them and redirect that money elsewhere.

Does this overall allocation look reasonable?

Am I overcomplicating things by having both an Arbitrage Fund and a Liquid Fund?

Would an Ultra Short Duration Fund add any value here, or are the Arbitrage + Liquid Fund combination sufficient?

For emergency fund creation, is SIP the right approach, or should I simply invest lump sums whenever I have surplus cash?

Any suggestions on the allocation between Nifty 50, Flexi Cap, Small Cap, and Gold?
