Montreal Lounges?

I’m flying into Montreal today. Landing around 1:30pm. My next flight to the US departs at 6:30pm. Is there access to any lounges in the airport? I know some are “international only” or “domestic only”…obviously I’ll have the time to bounce around to wherever (pending access or security or whatever).

Pace 4 Pro vs Garmin Forerunner 970

Cost comparison after tax: Pace 4 Pro = $485 and FR970 is $562

What’re the major pros/cons of each? Not sure which way to go. I’m a triathlete, do a lot of hiking as well. Value quality GPS, heart rate, and sleep tracking.

Any quick thoughts?

Restaurant Takeout - ORD

I have a PP membership through my USBAR. It at least used to include airport takeout from select locations.

Does this still exist?

Specifically, any options at ORD?

United Explorer Card Thoughts?

United Explorer Card

I delayed and decided not to apply for the Explorer card when they were running the 70k/80k bonus + Silver status. I regret that for missing out on the extra miles earned and larger discount on award flights. Is that a promo that United runs with any regularity/would expect to come back around sometime? Or am I better off just going ahead and applying now?

Additional questions:

* how quickly does the card "activate" to take advantage of the discounted flights?
* how stringent are they approving "sole proprietors" for a business card? I'd be interested in going the business card route for the extra 30k miles (although I don't get the first year free)
* does adding an Authorized User make them ineligible for a bonus in the future?
* what's the experience/pricing like booking hotels and rental cars to use the annual credit?

Booking USA west coast to Europe with EVA?

I'm currently looking to book from California to Italy for September. I have specific dates, and don't need business class. Simply trying to use points instead of cash. I'm browsing flights on basically every airline I can transfer to...one new one I looked at is EVA Air.

Their site seems...funky? When I search, I get a list of flight options. However, no prices show? The only time I see a price is when I select a flight, click "Confirm," and go to the next page where I'd presumably confirm info and pay.

I've done this with a couple of the options and both show 34,000 miles (so 45,300 CapitalOne miles) but doesn't show a cash portion.

Are these flights actually available? Do they not show a price (in miles) until you choose a flight? When do I find out the fees charged?

For the record, I *did* check one flight (SAN-IAD-VCE; September 20 8:00a-7:55a; UA1071 and UA321) on United and United has it as available...for 120k miles + $5.60. They show business class for 395k miles. EVA shows business class on this flight for 65,000 miles.

Another example is SAN-EWR-VCE (September 20 6:35a-9:05a; UA327 and UA170). 395; + $5.60 on United vs 65k on EVA.

Am I being dumb and completely missing something? Fees will be astronomical? Other? Does EVA use an award chart for USA-Europe, so it is a flat miles cost?

If anyone has suggestions for this, I'd love to hear it

Edit: EVA shows ~16 different flight options online. Zero are actually bookable.

New hard hat - Type II with full brim

Hey all. I started a new (design) job, and my company has told me to go buy a new hard hat (they reimburse). For the specific job I’ll be in the field for, the GC requires is to be a Type II, “Kask-style.”

Sounds like Kask is fairly common. I’ve looked at the Zenith X2 with full brim…I originally was going to do the X2, but after doing some reading, the full brim could be nice for some sun protection on the ears while on site.

For those of you working for a GC, have full brims been accepted on the new “climbing style” helmet with no issue?

Also, as an engineer going to site, is there any reason to get Class E rated? I don’t work with electrical, but my inclination was to get it as a safe “cover all.”

DO NOT BUY THESE - may damage your HVAC system

These filters are not a match for a vast majority of residential HVAC systems as they restrict the airflow too much. I used one and it caused the AC coils to ice over due to low airflow which in turn burned out the ECM motor ($1450 part). I have since learned these filters have a MERV rating of 13 while standard residential HVAC systems call for 8.

New MacBook Air warranty is shorter than should be?

I bought a MacBook Air M5 from Costco. I made the purchase online on June 25, and I picked it up from the store on July 3. I’m just now getting into the laptop and it says that the Limited Warranty expires on May 7, 2027, and that I only have three days left to add AppleCare.

This…doesn’t seem accurate, correct? What causes this? Any way to fix the warranty end date/give me more time to decide if I want to add AppleCare?

Forerunner 945 ($140) or FR970 ($500-$600)

I made a post the other day about my four year old Forerunner 945 dying on me. I contacted Garmin about this, and they offered to let me go through their Exchange program. I’d get a “recertified” 945 for $140 (presumably plus taxes and shipping)

Alternatively, I buy a new 970 for ~$480-$600 (depending on where I buy and the sale).

Obviously spending an extra $400 probably doesn’t make sense…but also feels weird to spend so much on a device that was released seven years ago.

Any here have thoughts or experience with this through Garmin?

Any retailers left with the old pricing?

Looking for a MacBook Air and hoping to get lucky and find one with the old pricing. Anyone know of a retailer that hasn’t raised prices yet?

Recommendations for new fitness watch? (Forerunner 945 replacement)

I think my current Garmin Forerunner 945 finally died after four years of use. Several months ago I made a mistake and wore it into a sauna. Ever since, it appears to get water under the screen (and so I’ve avoided submersion until a steady rain this morning), and the “elevation gain” on activities seems wildly high. The battery got low this morning and then it died, and it won’t come back on.

I planned on upgrading during sales at some point later this year, but now my timeline has been moved up.

What I’m looking for: primary activities are running, biking, swimming (both pool laps and open water), hiking, walking, and occasionally skiing. I’ve also done some other random activities like stand up paddle boarding.

I need it to last several days on a single charging for multi-day hiking trips, and 16 hour activities (long triathlons). I also need GPS accuracy, including elevation gain. My wrist is on the smaller side, especially for a grown man lol

Any recs would be incredibly appreciated as my initially research looks like the lineup/capabilities have changed a good bit in the last five years.

I’ve heard some good things about Coros, but I’m admittedly not too familiar with the products. but I’m open to the switch. Any help narrowing down the search would be amazing. And what is a decent sale for some of these? I choke at the idea of dropping $1000+ on a watch.

MacBook second year warranty and other Costco benefits?

Maybe (probably) a silly question, but what is the second year warranty that you get on a MacBook when purchasing from Costco? eg what does that cover vs Apple Care?

What’re the other benefits of purchasing a MacBook from Costco vs another retailer? The longer (90 day) return period?

Can I add Apple care after my purchase for the same price? ($160 for three years)

Contemplating a new MacBook…suggestions on which/specs please

Some long background info. The end has a TLDR with a summary. I last bought a personal laptop in 2013 or so…a MacBook Air. It served me very well for many, many years. Several years ago, it slowed down considerably and is only useful for the absolute bare minimum now. For the last 7-8 years, I’ve almost exclusively used my work laptop for everything personal as well. This has been fine, but with a new job, I need to stop. So I’m looking to get a new laptop.

Some background info to help: I’m comfortable with both Mac and PC. The appeal of a Mac is to have integration between my phone/photos/messages again. The appeal of a PC is I can likely get it cheaper (but where to begin there is a whole other daunting task). So I’m tempting myself with a MacBook.

I largely would use it for browsing the internet, watching movies, messages, editing some Word/Excel docs (maybe? Idk if I want to pay for the Microsoft suite lol).

I’m inclined to get a 13” MacBook Air with 24 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. This feels like the best way to “future proof” it and help it continue to run well for many, many years. Although the RAM is likely overkill. The SSD could be too but I have a lot on my laptop and I hate dealing with space constraints. Thinking 13” over the 15” for better portability while traveling.

Prices currently (courtesy of various non-Apple retailers:

-13” MacBook Air with 16gb ram & 1 TB storage = $1149

-13” Air with 24gb ram & 1 tb storage = $1349

-15” Air with 16 gb ram & 1 TB storage = $1349

-15” Air with 24 gb ram & 1 TB storage = $1549

Is there any benefit/reason to get the 14” MacBook Pro for ~$1549 (16gb & 1 TB)? Paying to get the anti-glare screen or whatever?

TLDR: considering a new MacBook Air for generally light personal use. Would love recs on which one to get ASAP while some old pricing is available. Also, if anyone has thoughts on a color, would love that. Hard to pick from photos

Ink Preferred Referrals - Unavailable?

I’m trying to refer someone to get an Ink Preferred card…when logged into my account, I see a message to “Earn 20,000 bonus points per business owner when your referrals are approved for a qualifying Chase for Business® credit card.”

However, when I click “Refer now,” I get a message that says “Thank you for your interest in referring your Chase Credit Card.

This offer is currently unavailable, please try again later.”

Is this a glitch in their system right now, something tied to my account, or other?
