Ferragamo Rubber Bottoms Disintegrated

Have had these Ferragamo shoes for 10+ years but have taken care of the leather pretty religiously.

I was walking in them a few weeks ago headed to a meeting in Tokyo when they suddenly crumbled and half the rubber fell off. Needless to say I had to stop by a shop and buy a new set of shoes (it was very hard to find size 11 in Japan, which is a whole other story).

Anyways - how can I fix this or are these even savable? Is this common?

Most of my work shoes do not have rubber bottoms - 1 am glad I didnt buy too many of these!

Realistic Running Amount per week for adult nearing 50

I am a 46-year-old male who used to be very active when he was younger (played soccer and basketball in college), but took the last five years off due to cancer (NED!) as well as young kids that took up most of the free time.

I’m looking to get back into running and quite honestly I’m struggling a bit understanding my body’s capabilities now versus what I was used to do. Back in the day I used to be able to run 3 miles quite easily on a treadmill or outside plus play two hours of basketball 2 to 3 times a week without any issues or being sore the next day (some days I’d run 3 miles on treadmill to warm up to play basketball!)

Over the last one and a half months I’ve been trying to get back to running three days a week (would like to get up to 3 miles 3 to 4 times a week) and basketball 2x a week.

I didn’t just jump into this - to prepare my body Ive also been lifting lower body three days a week to strengthen the leg muscles so they can take the pounding and stress of running/jumping. My exercises entail split squats, squats with a barbell, abductor planks, Nordics/hamstring curls, leg extensions, hip flexors, as well as calf and Achilles strengthening.

My sprinting, jumping and speed in basketball has been getting noticeably better every week (only play once a week so far), however I am really struggling to run! I’m finding it very difficult to run more than 1 mile without stopping and being gassed! My resting heart rate is 45 yet when I run a mile at 12 minute pace - my heart rate is hitting 140! I don’t know if there is something wrong with my body or my muscles or if I’m just getting old, but I never have had such issues with my stamina or endurance. Just 5 or 6 years ago pre COVID, I used to be able to run 3 miles in 18 mins (in college I ran 2 miles in 10:30!).

Do I need to reset my expectations - perhaps at this age running 3 miles 3x a week is unrealistic? Or do I have to change my approach and training? Is my body different post cancer? Are there supplements I should be exploring as I near 50?

Thank you all for any thoughts you may have. I posted this over at r/running and it was auto deleted because it didn’t meet the rules. This is not ChatGPT generated - I swear!

Any shoes with Forefoot Zoom Air and Zoom/air in the heel?

Getting back into shape via Ball after 3 years of being away (kids). We moved about a year ago and I think I threw out my old shoes. The only kicks I had were some GT Jump 2s that I had forgot about. Been playing in these about 5 times and while I love the cushioning and straight line comfort - I’m having a hard time cutting. I find myself a half step slow on quick lateral moves - either on defense sliding or making a move to the basket. These would make amazing running shoes - but for anyone with a shifty/guard game, they are slow.

I was looking around and can’t seem to find any simple, Nikes with forefoot zoom (top loaded - no strobel) with some type of heel tech (max air or zoom - im getting old!). I used to play in the Kobe V and Kyrie 1s and loved the court feel and speed (I’m a big fan of forefoot zoom). Are the Sabrina’s 3s the only option? I have played in Lebron 21s and love the tech but they are heavy!

I’m about 184 cm (6’0”) and 83 kilo (185lb). I have a guard game though sometimes get thrown in the post.

A1C of 6.0

I (M47) recently got my blood work done at the hospital and was surprised to find my A1c at 6.0. I’ve had some pancreatic issues over the last two years (they removed a benign cyst) and the more I read the more I believe that is somehow related to being prediabetic (https://www.theepochtimes.com/health/insulin-resistance-is-a-silent-driver-of-pancreatic-cancer-study-5525569)

I consider myself fairly healthy. I cut out all processed foods a long time ago and don’t even eat rice as I replace it with quinoa and I eat as much protein as I can (150-200g per day). I also run on a treadmill every day for at least 60 minutes, lift both upper and lower body 3 days a week, and play basketball once a week for two hours. This has has been my life for the past 6 months, yet my A1c remains stubbornly high.

I don’t consider myself overweight. I’m 6 feet and weigh about 190 lb but I’ve been on the heavy side for my height my whole life as I have a lot of muscle in my legs (I always had strong legs and continue to lift them to allow to run and jump without pain). I’ve always been on the high side for BMI calcs.

The oncologist who does follow ups on my pancreas isn’t super concerned. However, the more I read about potential relationship between diabetes and pancreatic cancer, it concerns me and I’d like to reduce my A1c as fast as possible. I plan to see an endocrinologist and to buy a CGM so I have a better sense of which foods spike my blood sugar but any other suggestions or tips would be very helpful.

Fluffy head and hair

If you have women in the house, make sure to disassemble and remove the hair on the end of the fluffy head with the pin. Hair gets caught in there and gets so tangled it becomes very difficult to remove and if not removed - clumps up and when used, basically melts the plastic around the pin!

The Simon Evan-Cook article referenced in Terry Smith's Letter to Shareholders

Not sure if everyone saw the article by Simon Evan-Cook that was referenced in Terry's recent and now infamous letter to shareholders. See it below from Citywire. Can't post the one graphic from teh article since this sub doesn't allow images (why?) but it basically shows average UK equity fund vs the market's rolling 3-year returns from Dec '99 to Dec '25. It shows massive underperformance by the Equity funds starting around Dec '21 (which makes sense).

FYI, i had no idea who Simon Evan-Cook is. He was a multi-asset PM, who seems actually to be a proponent of active management (you all can google and let us know if i'm mistaken).

Article below:

Can active still work in a passive market?

If the opportunity is big enough, then yes.

14 May, 2026

We meet our chosen fund managers all the time – part of our regime of half-yearly check-ups. Last month it was our UK equity managers’ turn, and we asked them what it takes to be a bottom-up stock picker in a market dominated by passive inflows and top-down themes.

We asked this for two reasons. Firstly, markets seem weird. Sometimes you can see this in the data, like the abnormal performance gap between the average fund and the market (see chart), or the valuation gaps opening up between large and small caps (which passive funds avoid). But other times it’s just a queasy sense that things are out of kilter.

And secondly, we were jolted by news that more US money is held in index funds than in active funds. And while the split in the UK still favours active, the flow away from active into passive is dramatic: Calastone data suggests £56bn has flowed into passive funds over the last three years, with £27bn flowing out of active funds. This is of market-warping size.

Is it just us?

We asked our five UK equity managers – all proud fundamentals-based stock pickers – whether they shared our sense of ‘weirdness’ and, if they did, what does that look like?

All five agreed that today’s market is a different beat from when they started out. They cited various causes, including passive dominance, Model Portfolio Service (MPS) consolidation, persistent active outflows, and platform and hedge fund behaviour. Additionally, some pointed to the as-yet-unknown impact of Artificial Intelligence.

Whatever the reason, they add up to the same thing: market flows used to be background noise, but today they’re a primary driver of returns. Particularly in the smaller, less liquid parts of the market.

Different times …

This interferes with their processes, which were designed before the recent changes in market action. They used to rely on getting their stock analysis right and spotting a mispriced company before the herd. But today this results in punishment, not reward, as flows continue to hammer a stock lower for longer.

If this sounds like whingeing, by the way, that certainly wasn’t their tone: all acknowledged the new reality with a pragmatic shrug, like a farmer accepting climate change.

This, of course, begged our next question: what, if anything, are they doing about it?

Here the answers varied. All agreed that liquidity is now poorer, and that holding concentrated positions is riskier.

… may need different tactics

Three of the five have become more wary of ‘momentum’, and while they haven’t changed their view of what’s an attractive stock, they are taking actions like hanging back before buying or taking longer to build a position to full weight.

They’re keeping a closer eye on who else owns a stock too. If they know a stock has forced sellers (maybe a competitor’s fund that’s experiencing redemptions), they’ll hold off until that pressure abates.

The other two managers were less inclined to change their process. They believe that market timing is impossible to master and that potentially deeper downdrafts are simply the price to be paid for steeper outperformance when the market swings back.

I don’t take sides in this debate. Both perspectives make sense and only time will tell if one proves better than the other.

Size of the prize

One thing our managers did agree on was the size of the opportunity in the UK market. Theirs is a target-rich environment. Small and mid-caps are on historically wide discounts compared with large caps, and domestic cyclicals are already pricing in extremely negative economic outcomes. At some unknowable point, they agree, UK small caps will make a lot of money.

These unusually attractive opportunities result from outflows from the usual holder base (active funds) as well as platform and MPS-driven selling. But they will only be seized by those with patience, discipline, and tolerance of underperformance – a dwindling pool in the UK right now.

Risk and reward

This chimes with the findings in a recent paper by AQR’s Cliff Asness. He acknowledges the risks of truly active management have risen, because nowadays you can look wrong for longer.

But the yin to that yang is that opportunities have grown too: when the market does snap back to fair value, it’s got further to travel. This means greater returns for the patient investor.

This seems a fair summary. At a time when global equities look worryingly expensive, there are incredible gains to be made from undervalued UK mid and small caps. There are costs though, and these come in the form of an unappealing narrative and an uncomfortable wait.

The choice is yours.

What in gods name is that smell coming from my Roborock F25 Ace?

We have a pretty tidy house - been mopping everyday after kids eat (we have 3 under 6).

Never noticed a smell with the water after mopping but we get this thing - and accidentally left the dirty water in it overnight (yes I ran self clean but fell asleep before it finished). My gawd. The smell from the water the next day was something I’ve never smelled in my life.

I had to clean the tank for over an hour and that didn’t work - so I soaked it 24 hours in every soap in existence to man.

Every time I use this thing I empty the tank immediately and rinse - but the smell is the same every time. WTF is the smell? We have lived here for years and never smelled anything remotely close to what the eater smells like.

X account suspended for "Violating our rules against inauthentic behaviors" Advice

What does this even mean? I created an account two months ago exclusively for fintwit (e.g. talk/discuss investments).

I follow 12 people and made 10 comments since creating the account - none of them controversial (MSFT is unvalued, blah blah). I even was verified and paid for premium. And I don't even use it for NSFW stuff. ???

I *possibly* posted something that hinted towards SpaceX being overvalued. Would that get me banned?

Also, I used my corporate email - but my X username is random. Is that being "unauthentic?"

I find it odd that they won't cancel premium despite suspending my account. Apparently i have to do it.

I do have another account that is tied to my personal gmail address - i've had it for years and use it for everything including NSFW stuff. No issues apparently with that.

Best bagel shop in Taipei?

I’m imagining an amazing New York bagel. Just a good ol crispy/doughy toasted bagel with reg cream cheese would be fine. Variety of cream cheese and/or lox with onion, capers etc would be amazing.

Any recs would be appreciated.

We have two of these washlets in our apartment - both seem to be broken the same way. Feminine spray looks like this - guessing the water is supposed to flow out of the holes on the wand extension. Anyone know how to fix? Panasonic DL-SJX11RTWM

Toilet holes too wide for c100 bracket

Moved into a new apartment and the toilet holes are too wide for the bracket that came with our Toto c100. Does Toto make wider brackets (or adjustable) that work with the c100? Upon googling it appears the wider bracket only works with a different washlet?

Page.goto: net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ADMINISTRATOR

Trying to use the scheduled task feature on chatgpt to help me schedule appointments (e.g. doctor). I gave it strict insturcitons on what webpage to go to (and when), what to click, what to select, etc.

However, whenever it executes it can't even seem to access the webpage. I get the following:

I tried with Playwright, but this environment blocked the browser from reaching MVDIS:

Page.goto: net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ADMINISTRATOR at [https//website]

So I was not able to run the live availability check from Playwright right now.

Is this too complicated for Chatgpt?

Safe Way to Buy Something on FB Marketplace when it involves shipping?

Hi guys - read alot of posts on here about getting scammed on FB marketplace. Know better than to send money via bank transfer or line pay, etc.

But wondering if there is anyway to transact with people that are not near you and would involve shipping.

Pay on delivery + recording of picking up and recording package?

I've been looking on FB marketplace for a specific item for motorcyle and every time one pops up its always in Changhua, Taichung, Tainan or Kaohsiung - when I'm in Taipei! Item isn't worth enough for me to get on a train and go down but seems rare enough that none pop up frequently nearby.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Live Translation on Call - plans to allow connection to other apps?

Tried live translation for a call in Taiwan (on iPhone 15 pro). It worked ok but Apple translation is not nearly as good as Google or ChatGPT for traditional Mandarin Chinese.

Hoping Apple allows this feature to tap into other apps for translation services?

Does anyone have a workaround for live translation on phone calls (without having two devices)?

ChatGPT Translation for Phone Calls

I've switched over almost completely to using chatGPT for translation of written text - it's leaps and bounds better than Google Translate (though GT is useful for certain things like translating photos).

Not only is ChatGPT better for written text, but is also better at live translation between persons.

However, I haven't found a way to integrate ChatGPT into phone calls. I've been trying to figure out a way to use my computer via speakrphone + my phone to (i) listen to the language spoken on my phone which is on speaker mode (using computer microphone), (ii) give me the written translation on screen, (iii) translate my written response and (iv) speak that written translation back to the recipient via the computer speaker.

Has anyone else achieved this?
