The sudden realisation that I've been backing the wrong horse all these years

Yesterday, I opened up Djay Pro on my laptop and connected my T7 out of curiosity. Turns out, everything runs so much smoother and nicer within this software!! I DJ'd a corporate event last friday using Serato, and it was an absolute pain in the a** in terms of stability. At first, I blamed it on my laptop which is not the newest and also pretty low-end in terms of specs. However, after seeing how smooth and flawless the T7 runs under Djay Pro, even after several hours, I can’t help but wonder whether I’ve been backing the wrong horse all these years. So, if any of you are facing similar issues, keep asking yourself: Is it really necessary to keep using the so-called "industry standard" for controller DJs, or is it maybe time to set off for new horizons?

Few background infos:

  • My laptop is a 6 year old Acer running Windows 11.
  • I got a great deal for the Djay Pro annual licence a few months ago, so I bought it but never really used it with my previous controller, the Numark Mixstream Pro+.
  • Since I bought the T7 just a few weeks ago and switched back from Engine DJ to Serato after 2 1/2 years, I've noticed that things had gotten significantly worse on my ageing laptop.
  • Djay Pro now seems to be the perfect solution for my new setup. I will have to test it during a live gig though, before I can be 100% certain.

Working from home today. What better way to start my morning than listening to my favourite album! 🙏

Throwback to 2008. My very first setup and basically how I started my journey!

Back then, I didn't really know what to focus on (club or wedding/event DJ), so I tried to get a variety of different gear to see what suited me best. Very early on, I came to the conclusion that I prefer a digital DJ controller over the analogue gear. So, I sold my entire Pioneer club setup (2x CDJ-100 and 1x DJM-600) and focused entirely on the Hercules. It's amazing how far we've come; the DJ Console MK1 was a tiny, childish looking device that was barely capable of doing basic things. Today's controllers look like spaceships and wipe the floor with late 2000s DJ gear!!

Austrian here: Have you ever had a parcel missent to Austria by the mail service?

Up until the early 2000s, I thought this was just an urban legend, until it eventually happened to me in 2009: I ordered something from eBay and the parcel was missent to Australia by the post. After several weeks and countless inquiries, I finally received the parcel. What stood out to me was the fact that there was actually a sticker on it, saying "Missent to Sydney, Australia". I kept that parcel for a long time as a weird souvenir. My question is: Has this ever happened to you the other way round? Really curious to hear your stories!

Wallpapers recovered from a 2000s phone micro SD card

These wallpapers were found when running data recovery on a corrupted micro SD card from a bulk lot of electronics, thought I'd share them here. The files are dated between 2004 and 2009, making them period-accurate artworks and not contemporary recreations.

What's interesting is that this card is a 1GB Nokia-branded card which wouldn't have been available in 2004 and would have been extremely expensive in the mid-2000s (a 1GB micro SD card would have cost $100 in 2005!). I guess the previous owner must've got it for a newer phone in the late 2000s and imported wallpapers from their older device at the time. Sadly no files with intact EXIF data were recovered, so I couldn't work out what exact model of phone these were for other than the fact that it had a 240 x 400 display.

Nokia 6310i - a very sophisticated business classic

As a businessman/-woman, Nokia offered several options back then:

- A Communicator with a comprehensive range of office functions and capabilities almost on a par with a laptop, though it has the drawback of being far too bulky to carry around in your trouser pocket;

- A phone from the 8xxx series, offering style and luxury in a very compact form factor while also sporting the full business feature set, but doesn't last nearly as long as its bigger brothers;

- A phone from the 6xxx series with excellent battery life and outstanding build quality, offering just the right amount of office capabilities while still remaining compact enough to be carried around in your pocket.

If you went for the latter, you were greeted with a highly sophisticated and immaculately executed device that represented the latest and greatest in phone engineering Nokia had to offer. No hinges, no moving parts that could break easily, no chunky edges; just a phone that could outlast an earthquake and would still be able to send an email afterwards.

The 6310i was the absolute peak of the monochrome display era. Offering bluetooth and Java functinality, it punched way above its weight in terms of features.

Pineapple galore - my thoughts on Aventus and why this DNA is still relevant in 2026

I've always loved smelling good and wearing colognes in public, but it wasn't until 2 years ago that I began to take a keen interest in fragrances. After watching tons of videos and learning more about fragrance collecting and colognes in general, I started ordering decants on Parfumo.

Among the very first bunch of decants was also a very popular fragrance by Creed, called Aventus. Although it was probably one of the worst batches of all time (early 2024, can't remember the exact batch code), I still really enjoyed wearing it and after the 10ml vial was empty, I kept looking for a decent replacement that wouldn't break the bank.

Cue the Aventus clones. Almost an entire genre inside the fragrance bubble, there are so many "alternatives" out there you'd probably need an entire warehouse just to store all of them.

Over the last 2 years, the following Aventus alternatives were (or still are) part of my collection:

- La Rive Black Water. An extremely pineapple-heavy scent with an incredibly weak performance. Typical La Rive, it's a top note blender that completely evaporates off the skin once the (admittedly very realistic) pineapple note is gone. Even though it's laughably cheap at around 8-10 Euros, I wouldn't buy it again. It's just not worth the hassle for the few minutes of pineapple heaven!

- Al Haramain L'Aventure. That hideous bottle aside, it's a decent clone with a mediocre performance that, oddly enough, is almost identical to the OG. What I missed was just a tiny bit more fruitiness. Also, at some point during the drydown I got a strange synthetic undertone that almost ruined the entire scent for me. Again, I think in the grand scheme of things, it's just not worth the money.

- Montblanc Explorer. Probably one of the most hyped Aventus dupes out there, I just couldn't resist buying a bottle of this legendary cologne. Was it worth it? Absolutely not, unfortunately. I'll probably be stoned for saying this, but I just don't think it lives up to its extremely high expectations. The performance is weak and the smell is just too synthetic. If anything, this is more of an Aventus cologne dupe than a clone of the OG Aventus - but I'm getting ahead of myself. Overall, Explorer just isn't for me!

- Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man EdP. Do I even need to introduce this fragrance?? CDNIM EdT was one of the first clones of Creed Aventus, and even after all these years, there is still a loyal following who swear by this fragrance. Maybe it was the fact that I went with the EdP instead of the EdT, maybe it was just a bad batch, maybe the bottle needed a bit more maceration... This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a cologne. Performance-wise, it's an absolute atomic bomb and its presence fills an entire room with just 2 sprays. That wouldn't be too much of an issue, if the citrus note wouldn't be so incredibly synthetic and overwhelming. Toilet cleaner, mosquito repellent - you name it. Also, that famous statement "it's just the opening bro, after 15 mins it smells amazing" turned out to be a complete, utter lie. I sold the almost full bottle to a friend and wrote off the entire CDNIM series - or so I thought!!

- Armaf Club de Nuit Precieux I. A few months after my horrible experience with CDNIM, a new hyped clone fragrance appeared out of nowhere: CDN Precieux I. I was able to smell Absolu Aventus at a store and really enjoyed it, so a clone of it sounded like a really nice idea. At first, I was hesitant to invest in yet another CDN fragrance. But as it turned out, the 50 or so Euros were a very good investment: Precieux I is unlike any other CDN. The harsh citrus note is almost completely absent, instead there's a sweet, almost floral fruitiness with pineapple, caramel and jasmin leading the way. Performance is on beastmode level, but that's to be expected with Armaf. To this day, Precieux I remains one of my favourite fragrances of all time.

- Goldfield & Banks Bohemian Lime. And now for something completely different: This one is a really light, summery and fresh interpretation of the DNA. While you're trading performance for naturalness, the really hot temperatures (32°C and above) is where it shines. If the OG is too heavy for you and you're looking for a freshie that scratches the Aventus itch while you're sweating your a** off, this one is a no-brainer!

- Versace Eros Energy. There's a well-known candy in Germany and Austria called Nimm 2, and if you’ve ever eaten it, you know exactly how Eros Energy smells like. Similar to Bohemian Lime, this one is a lighter take on the Aventus DNA that doesn't take itself too seriously. Overall though, I highly prefer the Goldfield & Banks.

- Creed Aventus Cologne. Not a clone, but rather a flanker of the OG, this one feels like if Montblanc Explorer, G&B Bohemian Lime and Chanel Allure Homme Sport had a baby. Again not the strongest in the performance department, there's no denying only the finest ingredients were used in this perfume. I was lucky to find a half-empty bottle for a very good price on Parfumo, so this was a bit of an impulse buy. Honestly though, if you’re able to look past the price, this is also a very nice and fresh Aventus alternative for the high temperatures!

- Avapari Smoky Pineapple. I'd consider myself very lucky for managing to get one of the last 50ml bottles of this sacred juice, before Avapari decided to discontinue it for good. You want an actual, 1:1, carbon-copy clone of Creed Aventus? This is it. Nothing more, nothing less. Imagine one of the earlier, fruitier batches of Aventus. No bs, no "twist", no nothing. Just Aventus in its purest (and truest) form. It's a shame Avapari gave up on this fragrance in favor of other clones of fragrances I've never even heard of!

- Loewe Esencia Elixir. While Bohemian Lime or Aventus Cologne represent the lighter, more summery take on the Aventus DNA, this one sits on the complete opposite end. A very dark and extremely mossy interpretation with a really strong performance. This thing is definitely no joke and you gotta be careful not to overspray it. Gone is the fruitiness or the citric freshness. What remains is Aventus' older brother who's considered the black sheep of the entire family. An "enfant terrible" if you will. I really like it and it's probably my favourite out of all the clones I've mentioned so far!

- Rasasi Hawas Black. Spoiler alert: If you already own Esencia Elixir, this is completely redundant. Also a very dark interpretation, this one manages to reclaim just a tiny amount of the fruitiness of the OG, but is otherwise almost identical to the Loewe. Performance is also weaker, but at least it's significantly cheaper than the latter so definitely worth trying if money is all that matters to you.

Bottom line: Even though I've never smelled any of the Supremacy's and there's still a bazillion other Aventus clones out there, I think I've covered most of what this DNA has to offer in all its facets. The rabbithole probably couldn't be deeper and more complex, but I'm glad I fell into it. Despite the prevailing view in the fragrance community that Aventus is hackneyed and boring, we're far from done when it comes to its clones and alternatives - and I love it!!

Nokia 7210. The very first Nokia handset for the mass market with a color screen, released in October 2002.

Its direct successor, the 7250, had a camera on the back and thus was much more popular in the long run.

Speaking of holy grails: The phone seen in the pictures is the very first fully working Motorola DynaTAC prototype from 1973!

The man holding it is of course none other than Dr. Martin Cooper, the "father of the cellphone". He was the mastermind behind the development of the very first mobile phone that you could hold in your hand while walking freely. Prior to his concept, the closest thing to "mobile" phones were stationary car phones built into luxury automobiles. They were clunky and you were forced to sit in your car while using them, which never really felt right for Martin. So, he and his team were working day and night to develop a device that could fit the entire car phone infrastructure into a relatively compact handset. In 1973, the first 100% functional prototype was ready to use, so on April 3rd, Marty took the opportunity and called his rival at Bell Laboratories, Joel Engel, while walking down Sixth Avenue in Manhattan.

The ultimate phone for a digital detox: Motorola "Motofone" F3

I once helped a good friend during his store opening. To thank me, he gave me his old Motofone F3 as a gift for my phone collection. Compared to my other devices, this is really the craziest/most unusual handset. The screen is just a couple of 7-segment displays on an E-Ink layer. This meant crazy long battery life and an absolute bare minimum of features.
