Goodbye faithful, neglected stylus.

I have an m1 12.9” pro provided by work. I also have a stylus. My case, which held the stylus nicely, started peeling apart, so I decided to go commando and just carry the iPad around sans case. I just realized a couple of days ago that my stylus was missing. I’ve checked all my bags, under the couch cushions etc and no luck. The real tragedy is that, after five years, I never really used the stylus or the iPad to their full potential. I even took a community education Procreate class. C’est la vie. I am pecking out this note on said iPad. I am pretty sure IT will make me return it after five years due to policy.

My "open file" window extends below the bottom of my screen

When I want to choose an image to post to a site (hello IMGUR), the dialogue box extends below the bottom of my 13" laptop screen. If I maximize the window I can see the "open" button, but it is an annoyance. According to wmctrl, I am using xfwm4. Thanks for any tips.

Utah natural lawn alternatives

My aging mom lives on 20th east in Sandy, and we are looking at alternative lawns for what I believe is zone 7a that require little to no mowing and can stand the hotter summers. We don't want to just put down rocks because that heats up the community. Thanks for tips. EDIT: it does not need to be grass, but should stay under 6 inches high to meet city code. This place looks interesting: https://www.highcountrygardens.com/collections/wildflower-seed-mixtures

The banks of the Provo river

I recently went tubing, putting in below the dam and getting out at Vivian park. Actually, I got out before Wildwood because my tube was too small and walked along the south bank for a while. I saw a yurt, and a bunch of empty semi-trailers, and flatbed trucks. There was a dump truck from the Las Vegas water district. I also noticed as we were drifting down the first part of the river that there appear to be either small campsites, or shelters, some of them pretty well-established, with little fountains set up to cool off tubers. It was pretty festive and cool until my fat butt started slamming into submerged boulders, but that is what happens when someone else says they have a tube for you.

My question is who owns the land or road that you enter by Wildwood, where there's a locked gate? And how do you get down to all those little shelters and fishing sites? Are those family owned or just decades of benevolent squatting? It's this whole little secret community--very cool. I've lived in Orem for 25 years but have avoided the river because I can't swim and have an irrational fear of the water.

How is your ward preparing for the upcoming changes to the Sunday school schedule?

I'm always fascinated by how different wards do stuff across the globe. We will have six teachers rotating across two rooms. The sixth teacher will be a different ward member who will be invited by the 2nd councilor. He is super iinvolved and does aot of my calling. We would move to three rooms but our building is too cramped and our pleas to the area presidency have been met with "not now"

Apparently there is an Open Claw plugin for Canvas.

Given the stories of the havoc that Open Claw has wrought (deleted databases, emails, etc.) I can't imagine any possible happy ending to using AI to manipulate your Canvas shell. But then I think how great it would be to have Open Claw automatically update all the dates for the semester, and modify the module titles to include the new dates, and then maybe just provide a little feedback on low stakes assignments, and then respond to Canvas mail, but only from that one super anxious student who freaks about about anything and then the next the you know Open Claw will be assigning the students to write furry porn and I'm out of work.

Does the Deluxe box come with links to the PDF files as well?

I bought the deluxe version and having access to the PDFs would be convenient is all. I love the art in this game and the overall vibe a lot. Someone should adapt Peter Watt's Blindsight to this system.

Why do I get this giant preview whenever I post to Facebook using Firefox and how do I get rid of it?

I smashed a bunch of keys while using Facebook and now whenever I post I get this weird giant preview menu. How do I go back to the normal posting window? I am using Firefox in Windows 11.

Psalm of the disgruntled Sunday School President

And it came to pass in the fulness of times

That many young saints got married

And attended adult wards

Yet they still looked back on their single days

with fondness

And spent their Sundays visiting family

And visiting friends

And traveling so, so often

That they became

Like that one elderly couple

Who takes off to St. George in their RV

Every single winter

So they never have a calling.

Except these kids are young

And returned missionaries

And have much to offer

I want to hide their car keys

So they remain in Zion

Each Sunday

And can teach our youth classes

The board of education chose a new president for our school without any faculty input.

From a local article: "As president of PennWest, appointed in July 2024, he focused on “budget optimization,” according to his resumé. That included coming into the Pennsylvania university after three separate schools were merged into one and handling the enrollment and financial challenges of that.

Anderson ultimately spearheaded the slashing of 120 academic degrees and certificates, according to reporting from The Tribune-Review in Pennsylvania. And he focused on realigning programs to meet workforce needs, which has also been the call of Utah’s Legislature."

I would be outraged but it feels like every university is moving in this direction.

English 3040G needs some love

Linda Shelton is teaching this course and they need a few more students. I can say that once you take this class, for the rest of your life you are going to understand things about the language and the way we talk in America that will remain with you. Linda is a highly rated teacher, and the class isn't brutal.

I just need something to do authentication at work

I found out that if I use Outlook on my personal phone, that if there is some sort of legal problem they can take my phone and everything on it. So I just want a cheap phone that will do Microsoft and Google authentication, and Microsoft Teams, just using wifi. Can I just buy a locked Tracfone for $20 and do this? I want to put Graphene on my nonwork phone. Thanks. Ideally something small.

The new paper attendance roll format is so nice

The week and month information over the attendance columns is in bold text. It used to be designed for the screen, and was gray and very tiny. Such an improvement. If you know the church employees who made the rolls more accessible, please tell them thanks.

Also when entering attendance online, all class members are on a single page so you don't have to click to the next page when entering attendance data.

Now all we need is frozen headers on the online attendance form, so you can see what week you are clicking when adding someone whose name begins with "Z" at the bottom.

I love these small improvements. I have seen an increased emphasis in my area (Utah North) on taking roll each week, rather than quarterly updates. Maybe these changes are part of that emphasis. By small things are great things brought to pass!

Another random thing: Stakes in my mother's area (east Sandy, Utah) are being combined, as well as wards. I think it is because houses have gotten so expensive that only tech workers from out of state can afford them.

2018 Nissan Altima SE 100k on odometer with CVT enters limp mode on long road trips on hot days

A couple of years ago we were re-entering the road and bumped the bottom of the car and it went into limp mode. This year we were driving through Lake Tahoe on the fourth of July and we drove down a very steep, short turnout looking for a different way to the lake. It was a gate community. When I turned the car around and drove back up the short, very steep exit I had no power and then it seemed to be in limp mode, not leaving 2nd gear. I parked the car for an hour and it was fine. Later in the trip, in Ely, Nevada I was turning the car around on flat ground and there was a temporary loss of power as a semi truck approached. According to the manual the fluid never needs to be replaced but now I'm reading old posts and folks are saying every 25k or so. We just bought a Chevy Bolt and don't drive the Nissan a lot, but now I'm hesitant to take it on long road trips.

  1. I'm taking the car to get the transmission fluid replaced at the dealer

  2. How do I reprogram the transmission logic?

  3. Do I need to have the dealer do a high pressure flush or physical tear down and replace the screens?

It's a really comfortable car for road trips.

I had just got the corner of the roof assembled when the wind kicked in

Kind of bummed. I think I can pull apart the right side, which ripped completely free, and cobble it back together.

Can I use a Baofeng as an inexpensive police scanner while traveling?

I'll be in San Francisco for a few days during the fourth of July and would like to listen to local police and/or people working on the fireworks show on the fourth of July for fun and to avoid possible problems.
