I want to talk about how strange it is to write a murder scene when the head of your assassin guild is eventually going to read your book

This is a weirdly specific anxiety that nobody warned me about and that I've now heard mentioned, quietly, by enough writer friends that I think it deserves a proper conversation.

I'm writing in a genre where death scenes are basically expected, and my boss reads everything I publish. My supervisor will eventually skim it. My cubicle mate was at the launch of my first book and bought four copies. I do not want any of these people to read me writing the word "thrust." I especially do not want them to read me writing it well.

But here's the thing. If I write the death scenes badly because I'm imagining my boss reading them, I'm failing the book. The reader who picked it up because of the genre I'm writing in deserves a real scene, written with the same care as every other scene. The reader hasn't met my boss and shouldn't have to suffer for my discomfort about her existence.

I've mostly solved this by, when I sit down to write those chapters, very deliberately not thinking about anyone I know reading them. I write them for an imaginary reader who picked the book up off a bookshop table because the cover looked good and has zero relationship to me. It works most of the time. The morning after, while editing, I still sometimes have to physically push the awareness of my boss’ eventual readership out of my head.

I don't have a real takeaway here. I just think it's funny and a little sad that this is part of the job and nobody really talks about it. If you also write in a genre with stabbing and you also have judgy coworkers who read you, I see you. We're all silently grimacing through the same chapter

Video for example

I believe this is called a “hot take,” but the name of your child or pet has no reflection on anyone.

It may indicate the interests of the parents, for sure. For example, a former coworker of my husband named his twins Cagney and Lacey after a television show while another named his son after a character from an action film. However, two intellectual men (my poor husband fearing himself a bimbo) may be whimsical and name their fluffy boy Cheddar. You cannot predict anything about a person based on their name choices.

Was anyone else constantly stressed any time Allison copypastad anything about a forbidden book?

The results could be anything and with her poor impulse control there’s a decent chance she would make an off-color joke about the subject matter. And sometimes it’s just something about fanfics or Genealogy of the Holy War.

Anyway, do you think SLY has watched The Room?

Amazing self-insert generator made by friends of mine more than a decade ago

Truly, romance worthy of Romantasy.

And the Romantasy sub! Wanna ask about ideas for your book but you’re against AI? Use this because it’s from 2012 and plug the characters in! Learn synonyms for describing your massive MMC and your teeny-tiny FMC! You can even use it to make Dayman (whoa-ah) fanfic (which I did but I wasn’t able to save for some reason)!

Can we stop with the Blatant Self-Promotion hate?

Look I know it’s gross and that makes it fun to hate on. But it’s getting ridiculous. People can’t even seem to make posts about it now or ask questions without people from this community downvoting and leaving nasty comments.

Everyone’s got their own taste and there’s no need to crap on others for theirs. I like this community for the most part and there’s good memes and discussions.

But for some reason I’ve noticed a surge in negativity lately that is just so silly and needless. This jerking should be fun and we don’t have to bring others down for not sharing our tastes.

There’s lots of popular self-promotions that weren’t my favourite but I would never begrudge others for liking them.

Please just remember to be kind and move on if you can’t say something nice lol

Uj/ OOP, unlike the QAnon Fanfic fan, this isn’t saying I worry about your moral development should you find this. I just saw an opportunity to jerk about {Blatant Self-Promotion}.

Trying to figure out why I was recommended these books

So I shared books I loved and I didn’t love and I got the weirdest recs! First of all, all were three spice and below. Second, they had the weirdest tags- stuff like “non-binary romance,” “gay romance,” “bisexuality,” things like that.

And then I read them and I noticed something weird. There were books about people who weren’t white. People who didn’t like when hot guys who were creepy paid attention to them or kissed them without asking. People who thought superiority based on heritage was wrong. People who didn’t end up with the baddest boy. People whose father brought back a prince as a slave and immediately freed him.

I have no idea what the recommender was trying to tell me!

Anyway, I can’t wait until H.D. Carlton writes another book!

Next Book Rec?

I just finished the Phillips CD-i Zelda games and attempted to erase them from my memory using Benadryl. It didn’t work so I bought {Warriors: Into the Wild} and the first Animorphs book (without thinking about how long the series is) and am wondering which one I should read first. I know Animorphs is controversial for having the mentor figure get vored in the first book but Warrior Cats has good reviews so far. Either way I’m gonna have to wait until
September for next book. What do you guys recommend.

I just finished Fire Emblem Sacred Stones

Do you consider Sacred Stones a dark romantasy? I ask because, at least to me, it follows aspects I would expect from a romantic tragedy in a romantasy format. I thought romance was a subplot you could pursue via the support system at first, but it becomes the main story (one-sided if you’re playing Eirika’s story).

Uj: Content warning for sexual assault in fiction. This is not to mock people who enjoy these second books.

I’m making fun of the authors.

Rj/

An acquaintance loved the first book of this multi-book thingy. I loved the second book more but I noticed that people who really loved the first book hate the second because it tries to make a sexual assaulter seem attractive.

Should I warn the person who just finished {Eon}?

I understand the importance of consent (at least IRL) and it being stressed in stories. That said, however, I’m a moron who doesn’t get that people might still like arranged marriage and captivity romances but not want to read noncon.

Let’s face it, ace people don’t exist so if you’re in bed with someone of your preferred gender you’re gonna jump their bones even if they’re metaphorically holding a knife to your throat. Moreover, we know that IRL, arranged marriages have been common from the beginning of time, so a lot of people had to deal with it. So why not be realistic in Romantasy?

Note that I probably would complain if my romantasy contained POC, queer, disabled, or neurodivergent people.

Uj/ content warning for sexual assault and actually this is all unjerk

help, I need recommendations. I am currently thinking about how much I hate {Eona} for the tenth time this hour. It doesn’t matter how many times I think about it, it always gives me that same hatred. The FMC making out with the guy who tried to rape her, the fact that the rapist looks forty due to being tortured and is twenty four and she’s sixteen, the bury your gays trope, the lack of character development in the actual MMC. It just hits like nothing else. I need something else to make me feel like this.

Other books that have felt similar:

{Popular Vote} with the sexist ex-boyfriend MMC beating the FMC for class president and therefore proving his sexist point against her and also the one POC character is using her for a job opportunity

{Doomed by Tracy Deena} for the FMC not getting to save the day, being turned on by the choking scene in Othello, and threats of sexual assault being used for cheap drama

{Mad Love by Suzanne Selfours} for Cupid gaslighting a teenager

{Dawn of the Arcana} for making the attempted rapist the love interest

I just want to FEEL the way these books make me feel.

Hey!

I’ve read so many novels that I feel like I’ve run out of Dayman stories to read about. Please recommend some if you know any because there’s only like two short oneshots on ao3 about Dayman himself.

I’m looking for a slow burn, customer at a cafe and employee to lovers with an MMC who is kind to everyone because he is a master of karate and friendship for everyone.

Thanks!

Hey, sloopies of Reddit. Love your energy!

Anyway, I (5,000+ femme-presenting nonbinary polymorphic sentient rock) wanna get a romantasy book for my friend’s wedding anniversary. Garnet said Sapphire will know but I’m super mature now so I wanted to actually give a gift that isn’t a car I stole.

Not that I’ve stolen any cars since Steven formed his shield.

That I’m willing to admit.

So some tropes Ruby and Sapphire like:

- Uh, so I guess FF but they’re different gem types so MF might work

- No mailmen MMCs

- Cowboy FMCs

- Class difference

- Baseball

I’d ask Peri but she’s more into MM.

I loved these dark books meant for children.

WARNING: these are violence series featuring vore, death in childbirth, and aliens screwing people. They are dark, like Scourge’s soul, and I found most of the negative reviews were due to people missing that warning somewhere. If it’s not your cup of tea, that’s totally ok.

Now I will say they were not {Genealogy of the Holy War} dark… for me personally Genealogy of the Holy War was too dark for me. Whereas these books were dark, not that dark…

What I’m looking for that I loved about {Animorphs} and {Warrior Cats}:

• Enemies to lovers, I’m okay with Hate to Love too (except not Crowfeather x anyone because he’s a punk bitch (as a woman I am reclaiming that slur and I don’t dislike him but he’s the definition of a punk ass bitch))

• Dark Romance (Firestar x Onestar!!!)

• Unsure who the final MMC is. Ideally the FMC just ends up with Asami Sato instead of a man.

There’s other tropes I like, like the secret identity trope (FMC or MMC), fated mates, etc, but I think if I get too specific I’ll start to miss on some good recs. It obviously doesn’t need to meet every trope. A good book is a good book.

Some other books I enjoyed (and here’s my contribution if you like the tropes I listed, you may enjoy these too, please read warnings for some):

• These abusive MMCs are feminist, I swear

• Avalon Towers Fey Spy Academy (also the name of my band)

• Lethe Chronicles

• Servant of Earth

• Road of Bones

• This abusive MMC is feminist, I swear

• When the Purple Prose Hatched

• Nectar of the Wicked

• Fall of Ruin and Wrath

• Cliche Alpha Male and the Virgin and the Other Guy

• Rain of Shadows and Endings

• This abusive MMC is feminist, I swear but it’s a standalone

• Content warnings because of literal sex slavery, you moron Prince
