trying to make a mossy log

I’m trying to make a log with an interesting brown/green mossy bark texture but I’m struggling with the design and execution. This is the last creecher of my ongoing texture series. My initial idea was to make raised ridges for the bark and then that developed into stiffened wet felted flaps which would be more fun to touch but now I’m not sure if that would even look like bark. I’ve also considered getting real bark and incorporating that in the sculpture. Right now I just have a nice log of brown wool that does look like a log. And some design ideas doodled on it.

Another thing I’ve considered is needle felting the flaps separately and then attaching them on the log and then wet felting the whole log but I’m not sure how viable that is. Any ideas/tips are appreciated!

everything I’ve made in the last 4 months!

It’s not a lot and I usually average out at 4 in a month. Started with Cats in December of last year, and then moved to some abstract Floral themed Creechers, and then Pigeons and now I’m just doing some abstract texture Creechers. I’ll probably do rats next or cows!

All are needle felted with Himalayan wool, Corriedale wool, some plant dyed (by me) and some acid dyed (not by me). Sustainable, ecological practices like natural dyeing and supporting local women-run Himalayan farms (who I buy my wool from) has been a huge part of my needle felting adventure.

I love doing this! Enjoy! And let me know if you’d like to see the backs of some of these!

In order: Bobby the Blob, Caliban the Cloud, Mr Spike, Sky the Pigeon, Rosie the Messenger Princess, Lover Boy, Pipeline the Pigeon, Cherie Blossoms, Hello Old Flame, I’m Doing Great Actually, She-Loves-Me-Not, Water Cat, Fire Cat, Earth Cat and Forest Cat.

his name is Bobby

Bobby the Blob is needle felted with Himalayan wool dyed with sappanwood (purple) and marigold (yellow). His 49 tendril tops are wet felted. His tendrils and legs are wire, his eyes are glass.

Honestly I did not realise my vision for Bobby and his original design was totally different. His tendrils were supposed to be straight up instead of curled into his body but because of the size of the tendrils he looks insane and unhinged and with the tendrils down he at least looks like a flower or a polka dot creature. He also looks like a ufo which I didn’t correct early on and I just committed but I am learning to love him for who he is and not who I want him to be

His name is Bobby

Bobby the Blob is needle felted with Himalayan wool that I dyed myself using marigold (yellow) and Sappanwood (purple). All 49 of his tendril tops are wet felted. His tendrils and legs are wire and his eyes are glass.

I had a pretty different vision for him (last photo) and I’m not sure where things started to go wrong but it was probably when I made him more of a ufo shape than a mountain. And then his tendrils were too long and then the tendril tops were too big and now he looks kinda angry and anxious instead of surprised and amused but that’s crafting folks. At least he’s not boring?

I’ve accidentally made an angry alien

My vision for Bobby was pretty different from how he’s turned out. He looks like he’s from outer space and also has a totally different vibe from his siblings who are more chill and he’s like them but on acid. Imma go back to making cute stuff now.

Not sure how I feel about this and whether to even keep this version of Bobby. My idea was for his tendrils to be straight up but the globs are so big he actually looks unhinged and it’s marginally better this way. :/ I also don’t know why he looks angry

Which tendril looks better?

Hi everyone! I’m making a tendril-y creature and for the tendrils I have two options.

Option A - first picture - closer to the original design - it’s wire wrapped wool with a small yellow glob on it.

Option B - second picture - instead of a yellow glob, I’ve made it a tip.

3rd and 4th pictures are the two together and 5th is the original version I had in mind. I’m a bit stumped as to which one looks better. The glob stands out more but the tip is also nice and subtle and blends well. Both take equal amounts of effort and material

Ignore the pins, that’s just for calculating how many tendrils I have to make (70). All opinions appreciated!

And someone suggested I post here! Here is Caliban the Cloud who is a bubbly texture study made using needle felting but many people have told me that he looks like a bud, which yes I see it owing to his swampy yellow green colour and bubbly appearance. He’s happy to be a multi hyphenate. Bog dweller, odorous cloud and a good time for many.

I made this guy, his name is Caliban the Cloud and everyone keeps telling me he looks like a lil bud! When I was making this I just wanted to make a bubbly texture study and I guess with the colour choice it does look like he’s a freshly sprouted bud, ready to be crushed, rolled up and lit

He’s a bog dweller and the realisation of all my goblincore dreams. Named for Shakespeare’s Caliban from The Tempest. He’s an odorous cloud.

He’s part of this texture series I’m doing. Last time I did spikes and this time bubbles, which was 100x harder because I had to make the bubbles individually. I also used marigold dyed wool, which I dyed myself. This one is a combination of Marigold and copper mordant (for those interested in natural dyeing) and is the perfect colour for a foul creature of the swamp. Enjoy!

In The Tempest, Prospero says Caliban is not honoured with a human shape. This Caliban named after Shakespeare’s Caliban is a bog creature, an odorous cloud and the rightful ruler of the island. He’s a sweet guy but evil and whimsy lurk within him in equal measures.

This is my family’s house, built by my grandfather in the 1950s in a small town in India called Tehri. Due to the construction of the Tehri Dam, the entire town has been under water since 2001 and is now known as the Tehri Lake, a popular tourist spot for water sports. This photo was taken in the 90s and is the only one we have of the house. I also made a watercolour drawing based on my parents memory of the house.

u/chutneystain800 — 23 days ago

I made a small version of my family’s house, which is now at the bottom of the Tehri Lake, formerly Tehri Town. They had to move out in 2001 due to the construction of the Tehri Dam, they lived there for almost 60 years.

The second photo is the only photo we have of the house, clicked sometime in the 90s. The colours are all faded but it was a white house, with a pink bougainvillea in front and a mango tree in the back.

I think I got the proportions a bit wrong and it’s pretty small so I didn’t really mess with the details too much, like the grill and the shape of the trees. Definitely did struggle with the shadows. I also don’t think I have the right brushes for watercolour, but I did use 300gsm cold pressed paper (I think it’s some percentage of cotton). Would appreciate any feedback, as I am by all means a beginner and this is a gift for one of my sisters.

His name is mr spike and he’s a texture study mostly. I’ve made a lot of felted things now, since I got started last year but haven’t really experimented too much with surface texture. Next up I’ll probably do bubbles, ridges, scales, stuff like that. If anyone has any suggestions, please comment!

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, he’s completely hard, even the spikes are hard and not squishy (which is the main effort driver for felting) and there are total 37 spikes. He’s almost 7 inches in length, 5 inches height and 4 inches width. Legs are wire wrapped with wool.

He’s very fun to touch, and I think would make a great toy for a young kid or people who like fidget spinners, which is saying a lot because I try to separate my work from the toy category but this is an exception.

Needle felted with plant dyed Himalayan wool that I dyed myself with Sappanwood extract.
