file with DFS..?

I'm looking for advice on whether this is something DFS would actually investigate.

I bought a Farmers auto insurance policy through NYSUT and paid the entire annual premium upfront ($5,310) before the policy started. Months later, I was told I owed an additional $496 because an EFT/autopay discount had been removed.

My issue isn't that the discount required an EFT form, it's that I was never clearly told I still had to complete anything after paying in full.

Here's what happened:

• I paid the full premium before the policy became effective.
• Shortly afterward, I emailed twice asking if there was anything else I needed to sign or return and never received a response.
• In April, I was told that once my EFT form was received, my balance would go back to $0.
• I had trouble receiving the form, had to call multiple times to get it resent, and was eventually told it would take 3-5 days to process.
• A few days later, I called back and was told I still owed $496, which contradicted what l'd previously been told.
• Different representatives gave different explanations. One said the additional charge was due to two failed EFT drafts and that the $395 portion could be waived. Another later reduced the balance to about $376 after removing an unrelated coverage endorsement.
• On May 19, I was then told the original EFT form had been completed incorrectly, but no one ever called or emailed me to let me know. I had to call in myself to find out, then provide my banking information over the phone and submit another form.
• Throughout this process I repeatedly asked whether there was anything else I needed to do and was repeatedly given conflicting answers.
• To add, at the end I owe $280, which is less than i was told. That's the only good thing that happened.

I'm not arguing that the discount had no requirements. My concern is that:

• I wasn't clearly informed that paying in full didn't satisty the EFT discount requirements.
• My follow-up emails asking whether anything else was needed went unanswered.
• I received inconsistent information from multiple representatives.
• I relied on statements that my balance would be
$0 after the form was processed, only to later be told I still owed hundreds of dollars.
At this point I've canceled my renewal because I'm no longer keeping the policy.

Does this sound like something worth filing a complaint with the New York Department of Financial Services over, or is this just considered poor customer service that DFS is unlikely to act on?

NYS DPS upcoming interview

hey everyone! i have an upcoming interview with the NYS DPS (in NYC) for their utility engineering specialist role in the pipeline safety section with the office of energy system planning and performance.

i graduated this spring with my bachelors in mechanical engineering technology and have internship experience in HVAC design and energy systems. i also submitted a technical writing sample related to combustion testing and fire safety.

i was wondering if anyone has any experience interviewing with the DPS or NYS engineering roles and can share any advice on the process.

any insight is appreciated, thank you!

linkedin advice

is it worth it to apply to jobs that are "reposted x days/weeks ago" on linkedin.

when you go to the career sites for these jobs, they usually posted 1-2 months + ago.

are they still looking for people for these positions?

sanitation ticket

hi all! i got a ticket from DSNY (department of sanitation) because "my glass bottles, cans, bottles were mixed with cardboard" i made sure they were separated before putting my materials outside. i have footage of someone monkeying around with my bins outside.

i dont want to pay the ticket. i can choose to pay the charge or DENY the charge and have a hearing with the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) by appearing in person, having a phone hearing or online by mail.

for reference i am in queens.
has anyone exerienced this as well, any guidance..?

hi everyone. i would like input on this career choice. im graduating with my BS in MET from a state school in ny. i also have a summer internship (engineering-related) and am hoping for a return offer (best possible outcome) so i can intern while also attending grad-school (got accepeted into ivy league). i was applying to jobs that i can begin in the fall (if i dont get a return offer) and got an initial phone interview at a private school in nyc as a "Tech and Engineering Teacher". i would do the job for a few years, to save up for my masters or do the job while in grad school so i can pay the fees then look for roles as a design engineer (what i really want to do)

i dont have significant teaching experience, and dont want to do it long-term.

will i still be able to get design/mechanical engineering roles after a few years of teaching, or am i screwing up my career.

does this sound like a good plan overall, should i schedule the phone interview. any thoughts would help!

hello everyone! i need some help with an insurance payment situation (ny). i paid my full annual of $5310 in august 1 2025 for a policy that starts on august 11, 2025. the payment was a manual, one-time payment for the full year.

now in april-may im being told i owe $496 because they added an “autopay discount” to my policy and then removed it after 2 failed payment attempts. this doesn’t make sense to me because I already paid the entire premium in full before the policy even started.

there was an initial charge for $101 labeled as "balance transfer". then another $395 as "policy change"

my issue is- theyre also telling me the autopay was never actually added to my account.

this confuses me:

  • i received an autopay discount
  • payments were “attempted and failed”
  • if autopay was never active in the first place

also, i had already paid the entire premium upfront, so i don’t understand why any additional payments were attempted??

theyre also claiming they mailed me a bill that i hadn't received. i also didnt receive an email about a failed payment (which i dont get, because why are you trying to deduct money if ive already paid in full). the only place the bill showed up was in my online account, under bill statements, which i had no reason to check since I had already paid in full.

this came to my attention on 04/18 when i got an email about an auto insurance bill and i called on 04/20 and was told if i filled out the autopay form my balance would be down to $0.

timeline afterwards

  • 04/22: received autopay form (wouldn’t open, emailed back, no response)
  • 04/23: called again, form resent
  • 04/28: got confirmation the form was received (told 3–5 days processing)
  • 04/30: called again, now being told I still owe the $496 (theyre willing to bring it down to "some" amount- not sure what the "some" would be)

i asked to speak to a supervisor and am waiting on a callback for 1-2 days. the bill is due on 05/11.

i also spoke to an agent today on the nysut line who explained that since i paid the full premium for $5310, and had no balance leftover, the autopay discount was removed because there was nothing left to pay. in order to be eligible for the discount id need to have left something to pay. this was not told to me when i paid the lump sum back in august.

i was told a supervisor would call me back from the NYSUT line as well.

the farmers and farmers nysut line is telline me 2 different things.

is this normal? im not sure of what to do.
