I saw a video of a guy proposing at a baseball game and getting turned down. Getting rejected like that in front of a crowd (then potentially millions once it spreads online) is devastatingly brutal.

If you already know your answer is no, it’s kinder to say yes in the moment and have a heart-to-heart later in private. You avoid putting someone on the spot and turning a painful situation into a public spectacle, and causing lasting trauma/ridicule.
