Twin Reverb sounds great at low volume

I picked up this 65 reissue because the price was too good to pass up. I had read everyone saying it’s too loud for bedroom use. Turns out the volume knob works just fine, and I find the tone at low volume *beautiful*. For comparison my other two guitar amps are a Blues Junior and a Tweed Princeton clone through a 1x12 greenback. I’ve over the years had Vox and Orange amps as well as a few modelers.

If you want a twin reverb, try it at a volume you’d use it at. Don’t fear the internet’s declaration that it’s “too loud.”

Ps - why do Marshall fans get to run 100 watts in their bedroom but Fender fans don’t?

Most excited I’ve been for NGD in many years

Drove from Knoxville to Nashville to buy this 2003 ES-335 from a blues guitarist who bought it new shortly after he moved to Nashville. It’s been his studio guitar since then. It was built in Memphis, my hometown. It has never left the state of Tennessee.

Fun fact: at the same time Gibson was building this guitar in the downtown Memphis factory, I was busy building my first guitar in my home workshop 6 miles away in midtown Memphis.

Button replaceable, or swap the whole tuner?

Got a plastic tulip button that was broken some time in the past and looks like the owner basically glued it back together onto the shaft. The tuner is fully functional, but I’d like to replace the button. Is it replaceable, or does the whole tuner need to be replaced?

Someone to take me fishing

I have unexpected free time tomorrow afternoon in Seattle (staying near lake union). Anyone have a recommendation on a fishing charter that I might reach out to see if they’re available for a late afternoon/early evening trip? Don’t much care what kind of fishing it is, but I have no gear with me save a pair of tennis shoes.

Flats and oyster bars in Apalachicola Bay

Shout out to Colby Gentry for putting me on trout and reds yesterday.

Also, my first time on a motorized yak, and it was honestly a lot of fun.

Finished an Aion FX kit

This was my first kit from Aion FX. Great docs, great quality components. Will definitely buy from again.

Let’s see the best fake guitars you’ve run across

I’ve learned a ton over the past couple of years about authenticating Strats and Les Paul’s. I’d like to see some fakes that are halfway decent. Does anyone run into fake strats with a walnut truss rod plug? Does anyone run into fake Les Paul’s with wings on the headstock?

Show me pics of the most well done fake guitars you’ve run across.

This weekend was fretwork. I had forgotten how unskilled I am in this art.

Haven’t done a neck from scratch in a long time, and it shows. Had fun though.

Help identifying this bridge, please

This 3-saddle brass compensated through body short/half bridge came mounted to a 2016 American Professional Telecaster Deluxe Shawbucker. It’s not the original bridge - can you help me identify it? The distinct aspect of it to me is the ground down lip. Most have no lip on the sides at all or have a full lip. This has its sides ground down half height along half their length.

The other clue is the saddles are compensated.

Just curious about it.

Took the day off work to relax and work on my guitar.

  1. Broke a fretboard.
  2. Ruined a piece of ebony making a new one.
  3. Ruined another piece of ebony
  4. Broke the CNC router on my third attempt
  5. Sprayed on the worst coat of color I have ever sprayed on an object. Runs and orange peel, which I didn’t know you could do at the same time.

Some days just be like that.

I cut my fret slots with a dozuki. I don’t know how to measure the kerf width, but it’s too narrow. The fret will only go in with hammer force. This seems bad.

Any ideas on how I can slightly widen the slots to a more appropriate width?
