Are there more PERIOD neo-noirs other than these?

Are there more PERIOD neo-noirs other than these?

I’m specifically looking for noir films made after 1960 (that would be neo-noirs), but that are also PERIOD pieces. Chinatown would be the classic example. Problem is, I haven’t been successful in trying to find a comprehensive list of this sub-subgenre.

Here’s a limited one with 45 titles:

What else of note is out there that fits these constrains?

Mrs. Davis, worth seeking out?

With all the Lanterns talk, I realized Mrs. Davis passed me by. I loved The Leftovers and Watchmen, is it up to the level?

What are some more “out there” picks a-la 8MM or Hardcore that would be a good fit for the pod?

Please don’t go for the easy jokes mentioning Salò and similar. Let’s do choices that would be realistic for the pod.

I’d pick Falling Down with Michael Douglas.

What non-fiction CR-coded books you recommend?

Just ordered London Calling based on CR’s endorsement on the pod and also everyone raving about it here.

But what else is there?

On my side, I’d recommend the works of David Grann, known for his The New Yorker articles and the movie adaptations of his books (Killers Of The Flower Moon and The Lost City of Z).

Can you “overdo” things with the SPF?

Since I started with Tretinoin years ago, I apply SPF religiously every day of the year.

The problem is that this summer in particular I’ve been spending a lot of time outdoors. I also put on sunscreen on my shoulders and arms, but that hasn’t stopped me developing a nice tan on my body. But my face stays very pale in comparison, creating a really ugly contrast.

Is that a must with Tretinoin, or is there some kind of compromise that could be reached? Would using a less potent SPF (right now it’s 50) work?

Here’s some 80s romantic comedies much better than About Last Night

It’s not that Bill has ran out of movies from his youth, is that his tastes are bizarre. Instead of About Last Night we could have had these much better options in the same genre (all of them still not covered on the show):

- Moonstruck
- Dirty Dancing
- Modern Romance (absolute classic!)
- Bull Durham (they’re probably saving this one)
- Married To The Mob
- Desperately Seeking Susan
- Romancing The Stone
- Peggy Sue Got Married
- Flashdance
- Splash

What does everyone think of the BBC Agatha Christie’s adaptations during this last decade?

Since they started with And Then There Where None in 2015, the BBC has been pumping out adaptations of Christie’s novels every year or two.

Which are the highlights and what’s your overall opinion on them?

What happened with Van’s resurgent hairline?

Hasn’t it been a year since the hair transplant? If he’s still shaving it, it mustn’t have taken off. Feels bad to go to all this trouble and then it’s just for nothing. How often these procedures aren’t successful?

Which Almost Famous cut it’s the best one?

I watched the movie many times, but not once in the last 10 years. I’ve seen the Director’s Cut, but don’t remember if I prefered it to the theatrical, to be honest.

The thing is, when I started listening to the show, I thought “they’re gonna do it eventually, so I’ll save my next rewatch for when it’s announced”. But being that it’s been indefinitely saved for later and also that my girlfriend has never watched it, I’m just gonna go for it.

Online, the general consensus is very split. Which one do you think it’s best, not only for a first watch but in general as a movie if only one version could exist?

Which sequels (of movies already covered!) you think they should do next?

Obviously, The Empire Strikes Back would be cool.

Let’s exclude the MCU, though. Not only it’s unlikely, but also being that every entry can technically be considered a sequel to the original Iron Man, we could be just listing different titles from it all day.

People aren’t talking enough about how good “The Invite” looks

It would have been so easy to just shot it in digital, overlighting everything and giving it a cheap plastic book. “Hey, it’s a comedy! Let’s focus on the actors, the dialogue and the performances”. But no, you can tell there’s a special care put into the lighting, the blocking, how the camera moves without being showy, the composition of the frame, the color patterns with the clothing and the furniture, you can feel the grain of the celluloid too… movie is just pure cinema.

Is any of those “Tarantino’s Favorite Films” lists on Letterboxd, legit?

I’m aware that QT has sometimes listed his favorite movies for a magazine or the Sight and Sound poll or similar, but those are 10 to 20 titles max. He’s also done some genre ones (Spaghetti Western…), too.

But has penned anything more comprehensive (other directors like Edgar Wright have “official” list with their faves) ? There’s lists on Letterboxd with 300 titles and others with 7k entries. It feels that it’s just random films that QT mentioned in passing in interviews during the years, right?

Is there any rhyme or reason on why some of those lists have a few hundred movies and others have many thousands?

What great longform articles have you read lately?

It doesn’t have to be about sports or just recently published or about current events. Just a really well crafted and gripping long article. It can be a profile about some public figure, an exposé… anything is welcome.

Can anyone recap the last year of Skanks for me?

I used to listen to the pod every week for years, but I’ve been basically out for the last 12 months. I know Dave left and they have semi-rotating guest hosts now.

Any other big events? Has there been a memorable episode from the last few weeks that could act as a point of entry? Has the show gone downhill and I shouldn’t bother with it anymore?

Which movies have been unfairly buried due to its remake “taking its place” in the culture?

You mention “Point Break” or “Carrie” and no one thinks of their remakes, you picture Bigelow and De Palma’s films. But with other cases, the remake is what you think of:

- 3:10 to Yuma
- Tru Grit
- The Fly
- Ocean’s Eleven

In some cases, it’s because the remake is clearly a better movie or because the original was always a minor title and the remake took the premise and elevated it.

But in what instances do you think that’s unfair?

For me it’d be “The Italian Job”. 99% of the population pictures Wahlberg and Norton and not Michael Cane. And sure, the remake was ok and an entertaining early dvd/TNT cable rewatch, but the original is 10x as charming an inventive.

Have you ever regreted watching a movie for the pod?

I’m one of those that only listen to an episode if I have just watched the movie the day before. Even if I have already seen it in the past, I want it fresh for the pod. And if I haven’t, then I save it for sometime in the future.

A lot of the times, I’m gladly surprised giving a chance to something I would never have tried on my own. Others, even if the movie is mediocre, it’s at least entertaining and fun enough (like a memorable misfire with Crash or some of the cheesy Kyle Brandt picks).

There was only one time that I felt like a fool and wasting my time, it was the recent Domestic Disturbance. Couldn’t believe how bad it was. Nothing redeeming about it. The pod was fun, though.
