Do we ever get a canon explanation for why the dinosaurs didn't stay away from the fences?

Animals kept within electric fences usually don't approach them again once they've learned that the fences are electric. You can usually turn off the electricity after a while, and the animals still stay away from the wires.

This is even mentioned in the Jurassic Park novel, after the electricity go out, as a reassurance that they're probably safe.

But they're not safe at all, the dinosaurs apparently don't behave like cows, goats, pigs, geese etc. They break out almost immediately. Why do they do that?

It's canon both in book and movie that the raptors attack the electric fences all the time. In the book, no reason is stated for it, but in the movie, it's said to be to test the fence for weaknesses. But all the other ones? Why did the T-rex put its front claw on the fence, for example?

Should I "Spanish-ify" my name in Spanish speaking countries?

I'm a Swedish guy named Henrik (pronounced like Henry but with a k at the end). I plan on visiting a Spanish speaking country this autumn (Guatemala). I'm wondering: Would it be a good idea to Spanish-ify my name when I'm there? I guess it would mean that I'd tell them my name is Enrique?

In Sweden, we never expect visitors to "Swedish-ify" their names... But I have seen other people do it, when they visit other countries. For example, I once met an Italian guy when I was in China, who said his name was "Angel". A few days later, when I saw his name written down on a note, it turned out it was actually "Angelo".

So, whaddya say? Should I go with Enrique? Will the Guatemalans appreciate it... Or would they just find it weird, if they found out my name is actually Henrik?

I was going to post this in a language sub, but then I realized it was maybe a stupid question, so...

Edit: You all seem to be in agreement - I will definitely call myself Enrique over there! Thanks!

A few thoughts about Scandinavians and our proficiency in English

M42 Swede here. Which means my mother tongue is Swedish and my second language is English.

Native English-speakers often compliment us Scandinavians on how good our English is. Often followed by a comment on how they themselves are a bit ashamed for not knowing a second language better.

While we certainly appreciate the compliment, I'm making this post to inform you that Scandinavians' relationship with the English language can't begin to compare with native English-speakers' relationship with their second language. We Scandinavians have it much easier learning English than they have learning Spanish, German, French or what-have-you.

First of all, you must remember that literally all pop-cultural phenomena that are really popular in English-speaking countries, are also popular in Scandinavia. This means that literally all the most popular music being played in i.e. the US, is also being played in Scandinavia all the time. It means that literally all the most popular shows and movies in the US get shown in Scandinavia all the time. On top of that, many Scandinavian musicians sing in English.

Since infants aren't kept away from neither TV nor radio, this means that Scaniavians get exposed a lot to English from birth. Literally.

Secondly: In Scandinavia, the only media that get voiceovers are shows and movies aimed at small children, i.e. under the age of ten or so. Everything else keeps the original voices, but gets Scandinavian subtitles. This is important for two reasons: One, it gives us even more immersion than the music, and two, it lets us associate English words with the Scandinavian words written on screen. I have learned many English words from subtitles.

Thirdly: Another important factor is that young kids in Scandinavia think that English sounds cool. You know how most languages have a certain "feel" to them? Italian is romantic, German is militaristic, French is... Also romantic, I guess? Well, English sounds badass. It's the language of action heroes. Yippe kay-aye, motherfucker sounds so awesome that it became one of the most memorable catchphrases of all time. A Swedish translator had the unfortunate job of trying to translate it for the subtitles; the result was so unintentionally hilarious that I'm genuinely too embarassed to post it here.

So when me and my friends were adolescent and running around in the woods playing war, we naturally shouted "I'll kill you" and "blam, you're dead", in English. We made an effort to speak English because we felt motivated to do so.

Contrast all this to my experience learning German. By age ten, everyone in my class had to pick a third langage to start learning. I randomly chose German.

Officially, I studied German for over six years. But I didn't really study it. My heart was never in it. Here we had a brand new language which I had barely ever encountered, which I had heard in movies and songs less times than I could count on my fingers, and that, on top of it all, sounded lame to me and my friends. To this day, I can just barely hold a super simple conversation in German.

So, dear English speakers: When you compare your second language skills to those of a Scandinavian, don't compare yourselves to how we speak English. Compare yourselves to how we speak German, French or Spanish. Because that's a more fair comparison. Don't be too hard on yourselves.

I like to joke that English isn't our second language, it's our first-and-a-half language. But no-one ever laughs at that joke, so I guess I should stop telling it.

Probably unpopular opinion, but...

... I think this show would be better off without the supernatural element. Or, maybe it doesn't qualify as "supernatural", since, as I understand it, other dimensions might exist in real life... But you know what I mean. The dimension hopping, the films, and all that.

By now you might be yelling: "But good sir! That stuff is integral to the story! You are doing the equivalent of saying that Titanic would be better without the iceberg or that Jurassic Park would be better without the dinosaurs!"

To that, I reply: There is plenty of stuff that could have worked even if the supernatural stuff was removed. I love the notion of historical fiction. The year it's set (early sixties) is perfect, because long enough time has passed since 1945 for it to be believeable that America has embraced nazism, but it's not so long after the war that the top nazis have died or that nobody remembers the war.

I like everything about the Smith family. The man and wife trying to juggle material success, loyalty to the Reich and surface appearance with conscience, being good parents and having a good marriage.

Similarly, I like to follow Kido (spelling?) and that Japanese dude who could dimension hop with mediation (I am embarassingly bad with names).

I like all the politics. The scheming between American officials, Japanese officials, yakuzas and restistance fighters. And I like how the world is divided up between Japan, Germany and a neutral zone.

The films, as a plotpoint, should be able to be exchanged for something else, a piece of intelligence maybe.

But why do I dislike the supernatural stuff? Well, for the same reason, I assume, that you don't want magic in realistic shows in general: I think it doesn't really belong, it makes the whole thing less serious.

Will every name eventually be impossible to name a child due to negative association?

Before 33 AD, Judas was a perfectly fine name.

Before 1935, Adolf was a perfectly fine name.

Before 1955, Kermit was a perfectly fine name.

Before 2010, Karen was a perfectly fine name.

Will all names eventually become tarnished?

What level of nakedness do women with hijab feel when they show their hair?

So, as I understand, muslim women with a hijab or other headdresses feel like the hair is too private a bodypart to show in public. My question is: How private is it?

Like, for Western women, I think most would agree that the breasts feel less private to show than the genitalia. While both feel uncomfortable to show in public, the genitalia feel more uncomfortable. Some are okay with showing the breasts at a public beach, but not the genitalia. I don't know if the reverse exists.

Men have this too, but to a lesser extent. By and large, we are okay showing everything except the genitalia to any and all people.

Where would hair for a hijab-wearing woman fall on that scale? Is it as private as breasts, for example?

Why do some ppl start to talk about how hot other ppl are during a date?

For contect, I'm M42 and exclusively dating women.

On rare occasions, while I have been dating a woman, she has started to wax poetic about how hot/beautiful/sexy she thinks a celebrity is. A random example from long ago, just because I happen to remember it: One women said something to the effect of "Johnny Depp must be the hottest guy on the planet", and then she went on to say how she wished she had Johnny sitting on one side of her and another hot celebrity (Swedish soccer star Henrik Larsson, in case it matters) on the other.

What am I, as the man dating her, expected to say in a situation like that?

"Thank god you don't have those guys nearby then, so you have to settle for me!"

"I totally know the feeling! My ultimate dream is to motorboat Angelina Jolie!"

"IKR? I'm bi, let's call those guys and see if we can arrange a foursome!"

I genuinely don't get it. When I'm dating a woman, I generally try to get HER to feel attractive... I don't think I would obtain that effect by talking about how attractive OTHERS are...

How crime-ridden was Okinawa ca 100 years ago?

I'm a bit of a karate geek. And even though it's been many years since I practiced the art, I still like to geek out about karate.

In particular, I love reading about the old Okinawan master. I will voraciously consume any material I can find about them.

One thing that strikes me when I read about their lives, is just how often they come upon people who try to rob or assault them. It seems like they can barely leave the door without running into "ruffians". For example, according to Gichin Funakoshi's fascination autobiography, he was attacked several times during his training period under his masters alone.

And these are the accounts of people who try to *avoid* trouble. One karate master, Choki Motobu, famously *seeked out* violence, and was supposedly in over a hundred fights. Karate indeed seemed to be a useful skill back then!

Undoubtedly, these accounts are at least partly fake. Some may be embellished or made up altogether to market karate. Others may be changed by the telephone game of history. But it's still a remarkable number of encounters, especially considering the small size of Okinawa, and the fact that Japan is known for its safety (granted, Okinawa is different in many ways from mainland Japan, and the safety of Japan may be a more recent thing anyway).

If anyone can chime in on this, it would greatly satisfy my inner geek!

Osv.

Where can I get (new-ish) Karl Pilkington stuff these days?

The last thing I watched was "Sick of it", and I am pretty sure he has been in more stuff since then. I've also watched two interviews of him with Craig Parkinson, but the last one of those is getting a bit old. Does anyone have any tips about anything I can watch or hear Karl in, as himself or a character? It would do wonders for my mental health.

Note: I live in Sweden, I use Youtube and Netflix, and I am open to subscribing to some other stuff if it gets me more of my hero.

Edit: I see you take the "Serious answers only" tag seriously 😄

How far away from their pond will frogs hang out?

I'm thinking about making a tiny pond in a corner of my garden to hopefully make frogs lay eggs there. Part of the reason is that I want the frogs to hang out in my garden and eat harmful slugs. But if manage to get frogs to lay eggs in my pond, how far away from the pond can I expect increased frog activity? The other edge of the garden would be a good 150 feet from the pond.

Frank and Juliana finding out that...

... Joe is a nazi, is bad writing.

So. They find out that he is a nazi because they find a movie in which he has nazi clothes and do nazi things. That's all well and good.

The problem, of course, that in the same movie, they ALSO see Frank getting shot in the head.

Now, if I saw a movie in which I myself was getting shot in the head, the movie would absolutely lose 100% of its credibility to me. I'd assume it was a weird, hyperrealistic form of animation, or actors wearing masks, or something. And I certainly wouldn't take it as proof of anything.

And yet, Frank and Juliana sees it as proof that Joe is a nazi.

Thoughts?
