Spine grinding/corner rounding?

I come from an amazing Plotter family, my father, brother, sister in law and I all have Plotters. My father asked if I could find a way to round the corners of the spine on his Mini5 since it often gets caught or snags when sliding in and out of his pocket.

I tried searching what key terms I could think of for this subreddit but didn't see anything (though I could have sworn I'd seen a post or two on it)

Has anyone done this already and recommend any techniques?

Thought it might be worth checking before I started trial-and-error modding. His is the black Pueblo with the gold-colored spine - Im hoping that gold finish doesn't come off once you start grinding, but I'd imagine it must? If its brass, maybe it wont be so stark as if it were a silver colored metal, but I really don't know much about metal materials.

Autumnal Flying Monkey Megathread

Flying Monkey updates and screenshots go here

Flying Monkey commentary, opinions and memes go here

If you're not familiar with why we have this thread, check out this post

Last month's thread

------

New season new megathread! There was a lot of weird interactions and intriguing developments in the summer thread towards the end so if you're bored and want to catch up, you have to navigate the replies and historical development of this comment thread

Many thanks to our faithful Third Rail reporter Moody_Shrew who has decided to discontinue her patronage, we wish her all the best in this new era of peace. That also means if you're still in there and want to leak any screenshots, we'll be here to eat em up ☕️.

Im not sure what SB's appointment of FM Prime (aka Australia aka Nicole) in her last letter means for the flying monkey thread but I will continue the rule that if you want to discuss any of SB's orbiters as people (opinion/theory based), then please put those comments here. If there is an update on the appeal in general (fact-based) that tangentially features someone that can go to the main subreddit.

This is mostly to not attract them to our subreddit to read about themselves and argue with everyone in the comments section of every post. Its containment.

Happy Fall y'all 🍂

For those WITHOUT pen support what app do you use for note-taking?

I have an OG Color Go 7 and was thinking of using it as an easy writer deck w a BT keyboard and something and general note-taking. For those that dont have pen functionality- what note or writing apps do you use? All I really want is something that loads quickly and maybe has nested folder structure for organizing.

Can someone fill me in on what the Incentivized Prison Program is and what the deal was with it?

First of all, y'all crazy and I love it. I was working yesterday and Summa's video came on saying that the subreddit was going crazy and was like 'Is it? What are they getting into over there? What hath my children done?'

I havent been keeping up extensively with the calls- can someone fill me in with what the Incentivized Prison Program is, and what the issue was with SB being assigned there? Or I guess what I am asking is what did she say to incriminate herself?

Damn Sarah always on the phone telling on herself. You'd think after those awful, awful videos she'd get it in her head to stop recording her crimes

Cyberspace — a "social operating system" for your cyberDeck

Cyberspace.online — Many of us on this sub are already long-term members. Last time I posted here to say hey and invite any new users was 4 months ago. Anyhow, for the last nine months I've been building this anti-corporate grass-roots social network.

We're almost 12k users now. We're mostly a bunch of hackers, Linux users, DIY-enthusiasts and artists. Lots of really smart and cool people. One of our mods even designs, produces and sells her own CyberDecks!

There's a timeline feed, DMs called C-Mail, chat rooms called cIRC, a jukebox, a Tron-style 3D multiplayer game (with DMT) called The Grid, an ASCII graffiti wall, and lots of other fun stuff to explore. Naturally there are keyboard shortcuts for everything (yes, including VIM bindings).

I've made an API for it, so you can use one of the community's open source TUI's, or roll your own client. APIOfficial TUIRagnar's TUI — There's also a web client called Cyberspace Desktop inspired by the old Xerox GUI.

The web version is incredibly customisable with custom themes, pixel fonts, etc. including the styles of 80s amber VT-terminals, Matrix green, 90s hacker, and C64.

Feel free to use a throw-away email. It's only necessary to verify to use it over API.

Let's bring back the friendly internet of the 90s when people were nice to each other :)

Working on Translation of Shonen Sunday Comics Special Dorohedoro Bon (2019) - 01-Interview with Nikaido

I got this neat special book filled with essays, interviews and older work. It has 15 or so chapters, some more text-heavy than others, and figured I could translate one a day and be done in a couple weeks. I'll post them as I finish them here and then upload the full translation to archive.org when im finished. This is a small feature before the table of contents. I'll include the Japanese version in case anyone wants to annotate (I'm using DeepL for the pages and the TOC below is a browser extension translation of the product description on shogakukan's japanese website).

TOC:

  1. Let's ask Nikaido about the Devil's Chapter!: What Nikaido thinks or doesn't think at all.
  2. An Invitation to Dorohedoro: How we should face the sludge.
  3. Let's ask the person who created the demon chapters!: The full story or part of Dorohedoro as told by Hayashida Kyu.
  4. 19 Sketchbooks: How to make sludgy sludge.
  5. Everyone Loves Dorohedoro: Who likes it and how much.
  6. Summon! Akira Yamaguchi!!: The conversation looks fun.
  7. Dorohedoro: Oh! There are some ways of thinking about this that are impressive.
  8. The Proliferating Dorohedoro: How many related things there are.
  9. A World Other Than Sludge: There are also works like this.
  10. The Ten Devil Chapters: A Dorohedoro Historical Chronology
  11. History that probably isn't for the exam.
  12. Dorohedoro Dictionary Dorohepedia: This is probably not for the exam either.
  13. Introducing Past Works: The road to Dorohedoro.
  14. Post-editing chapter: Hayashida's performance from today and tomorrow.

Has anyone read this book/essay (+ I found a 2006 translated interview w/ Q)

Title: Dorohedoro - Saggio critico sull'opera di Q Hayashida (A Critical Essay on the Work of Q Hayashida)

link: https://a.co/d/05GHWIn2

Description Translation: What makes *Dorohedoro* one of the most original works in contemporary Japanese fiction?

Violence, dark humor, magic, identity, capitalism, alienation, memory, and power intertwine in a universe that defies classification. *Dorohedoro* is not merely a manga or an anime; it is a narrative laboratory where the grotesque becomes a tool for exploring the human condition.

This essay offers an in-depth analysis of Q Hayashida’s work, exploring its narrative, philosophical, political, and symbolic dimensions. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the volume places *Dorohedoro* in dialogue with the ideas of Marx, Nietzsche, Foucault, Bauman, Camus, Sartre, and other key thinkers, demonstrating how the world of Hole and the realm of the sorcerers reflect the contradictions of contemporary society.

The book addresses themes such as:

  • World-building and setting construction;
  • Characters and their psychological evolution;
  • The relationship between memory and identity;
  • The power of magic as a metaphor for privilege;
  • Class struggle and alienation;
  • The body, transformation, and the posthuman;
  • Nihilism, chaos, and the search for meaning;
  • The visual language of the anime and manga.

Enriched by references to philosophy, sociology, literature, and cinema, this volume is designed both for those wishing to rediscover *Dorohedoro* from a fresh perspective and for students, scholars, and enthusiasts interested in understanding how pop culture can serve as a vehicle for critical reflection.

More than just a commentary on the work, this book is a journey into one of the most complex and fascinating narrative universes of recent decades—a place where chaos is not the opposite of order, but the language through which the world reveals its true nature. For readers of manga, anime, philosophy, cultural criticism, and Japanese fiction, this essay offers a fresh perspective on one of the most enigmatic masterpieces of our time.

----

Sounds fascinating! The book is in Italian. Has anyone read it or know of an English translation? I want to order it and see how much I can get out of a machine translation, but its only available in paperback (obv digital copy would be easier for translation purposes).

BONUS While looking for an english copy I came across this english translated interview w Q Hayashida, published in a 2014 blog, but originally dates to 2006:

how do sellers get our email address?

I left a 3 star review for a product (which was frankly generous since it actually didnt work, but the build quality was decent) and got an email a few weeks later from the seller linking my review and begging me to change it. There was a sob story about how they are having issues with their manufacturer and newer better products are coming soon, and:

>However, due to financial constraints and the fact that our store is currently operating under debt, we find ourselves in a difficult position. We humbly ask if you might consider deleting your review. We have struggled with this request, but we genuinely want to resolve this issue for you. If you would consider removing your review, it would be a tremendous help to our store during this challenging time.

blame-shifting and sympathy-baiting. AND a follow-up email two days later when I didn't respond. Shows gumption i guess. I was going to report it but then I realized- how the hell did they get my email address? I understand if I contact the seller first, but are they able to request it from Amazon? Five-star audacity.

How I got out of vine jail and kept my Gold status

Let me begin by saying that I know this isnt interesting and am only writing it for the few people in the future who might be in the my same predicament and try to search for an answer.

I spent about a month and a half in jail, after becoming Gold and always having consistently Excellent reviews (half of which had images attached, never submitted a video). It was a bummer, but I kind of needed it given I had gone overboard and was ordering faster than I could review stuff because its a fucking gauntlet out there once items start dropping and I also wait til I genuinely use something before reviewing. That being said, I had 12 pages of items needing review going back a few months, so I probably deserved it. My percentage was above 60%, but not by much.

What I did: I wrote to support about what the issue was and how I could resolve it and they sent a very cheerful, empathetic message about how scary it must be, how grateful they are for me, and to just keep doing what Im doing. Essentially, I got nothing. I had about a month until my review date, so I figured I could write five reviews a day until then and be finished before the deadline. Then I remembered I actually had to be at 90% by two weeks before the review date, as that is the "review period".

So I grinded the fuck out and got my numbers to 95% in the course of a few days. Each review was genuine, I didn't chatGPT it, I messed with each product, took pictures where it felt necessary. I treated the reviews regularly like ones I had done in the past, I just turned them out like I had a paper due in college.

What I learned: You don't need to wait until your review period to get out of jail, I regained access to RFY and the pit (Additional Items) within a week of reaching 90%.

I would suspect that if you are in jail, you should raise your percent reviewed to what your level requirements are, forget about 60%. If I am wrong on that, it certainly won't hurt to follow it anyway.

Then came the review period, I was nervous that even if I stayed above 90%, having been in jail would tarnish my record or my maniacal method of catching up would have played a factor, but it worked! The review period proceeded like normal where my stats were greyed out but I still had access and about 16 hours later I was still at Gold with my stats reset to zero.

Hope this is helpful to someone. You can get yourself out of jail! If you have any questions I'm happy to answer now or in the future, but that just about covers it.

Chromashading fountain pen ink sample swatches from Kitty Ink Pot

They are so pretty to swatch but difficult to find a pen that lets them shine (or even read legibly sometimes)- in most pens there's little shading or they flatten out to a light grey. Many of the colors I had resigned to the art ink pile (as in, not usable for writing) but then I found this fine-tip glass dip pen from SeventyTwo on amazon and its revived my collection. Its fine enough where I can write journal entries in an A6 sized notebook, plus its gorgeous.

All swatches are done with a glass dip pen- either Komamono Lab's Fonte Pen w/ Glass Nib or the one I mentioned above. Bought through Australian shop Soe&Soe (ships to US but its not cheap). Paper is Wearingul A5 Swatch Paper, Midori MD (cream), & Kakimori B6 Twin notebook Don't dwell on how wonky my gramaphone is, I tried to draw it from memory, I know it sucks

Is this a riddle? I am stuck in driver version purgatory

The current driver for Cintig27QHD is 6.4.10-3

Advice is to get an older version of the driver

For Mac OS 26 Tahoe device must be supported by the 6.4.11 driver

My perfectly functioning Cintiq27QHD, which worked just fine last week before I had to upgrade to an M4Mini because my M1Mini died, is just a second monitor now?

Are there open source tablet drivers anyone has gotten to recognize their device? I wish I could roll back my operating system to pre-Tahoe (weeping)

Mini research project on most successful VTuber hair color

Found this video with less than 250 views that uses statistics to determine the average hair color of the most successful vtubers while looking for a video on designing hair for a model. Its fun and snappy- the info isn't really helpful but I found it charming. I think it deserves more love than it got when it was released two years ago.

BTW- I havent found one that helps with how to actually draw the hair, just cutting and rigging. I need help with drawing and coloring, I can see that the roots are generally darker but if you know of a video that spells all this stuff out I would appreciate it! I think my problem is Im not a digital artist to begin so Im not used to creating hair.

What does real justice look like?

I'm sure all of us have thought that LO's victims should band together and file a class action against her, but as Clayton and others have said this would require lots of time and money, keeping the wound open and in all reality they probably couldn't squeeze anything out of her, even if she was found to be at fault. But I wonder though if they could pursue better legal protections against people like them going forward?

Something like Laura's Law that puts something into place where men can request proof of pregnancy beyond an HCG test or provides an avenue of recourse when someone submits tampered/fraudulent medical records.

This is a tough one because we want to consider legitimate causes, but I feel like there is something here we can pinpoint. The larger macro-level harm a person that Laura Owens does is causing people to loose faith in the court system and providing people like her with a roadmap for legal abuse.

If there was something like Laura's Law what should it cover? What should we absolutely exclude while being considerate of real cases? For legal folks what would something like this take? I think positive campaigning for future protections is a better path than further entanglement with Laura, it reshapes what success is and would go towards reaffirming faith in the legal system.

The technical feasibility and psychic requirements to perform the GG hacks (not written by AI)

There's so much with this case it's hard to focus on any single element, and I really think Greg's hacking abilities haven't gotten the attention and respect Laura implies they deserve. So today I thought I would highlight just how diabolical and talented of a hacker Greg would have to be to execute what he is accused of:

  1. Sending Ultrasound Video to Clayton Echard

Requires access to LO's email account at the time, knowledge of their relationship and that they were experiencing a pregnancy scare, writing an email adopting her exact syntax and tone, going back in and deleting all trace of the email after it was written, and sourcing the video and altering it.

  1. Creating the 2021 FPA and HonorHealth Ultrasounds

Requires access to LO's email at the time, her DOB, photoshop ability, but also the foresight to add a fiverr logo watermark trace, send the attachments to himself as her, writing as her in the email body for no apparent reason all to incriminate LO at some future time during his own pregnancy scare despite apparently believing it at the time (or maybe not yet? was he trying to convince himself?)

  1. Forging OneMedical Doctor's Note

Depending on how this went down he would have to have access the real OneMedical patient portal, create a fake user interface, or email addresses, must have known this was the medical provider LO was using at the time, adopted fake medical personas, all to make mention of the pregnancy narrative as it was ongoing. some graphic design skills. requires foresight that this would become an issue further down the road, otherwise it is just supporting the in situ pregnancy narrative.

  1. Fake Emails to/with Joe Cotchett

"Ms. Black Owens told us that Gillespie had doctored letters to Laura's prior family attorney early on in the abortion coercion case." Not sure if this is referring to 2 and 3 above or an allegation that Greg fabricated the Uncle Joe letters in order to make it appear LO was lying about consulting with Cotchett. Same skill set and preternatural foresight as above, except in the case of the latter, he also has to potentially know enough about Cotchett to replicate his manner of writing and reference personal interactions with family.

  1. Sending Ovarian cancer and oophorectomy paperwork to Mike Marraccini

In addition to aforementioned forgery skills, requires enough medical knowledge about gynecological exams and procedures to fabricate medical records (such as ability to spell oophorectomy). either a) has enough familiarity with Mike's case to know that he would make the claim in the future and fabricated evidence to support it to sabotage a woman he had not met yet, or b) the ability to make emails appear as if they were sent in the past

Making emails appear as if they were sent from the past

This isn't like backdating a check, Greg would need specific knowledge about LO/Mike's email client, expertise in database management tools and email MIME syntax, know how to rewrite encrypted or local application files without corrupting them, recreate the logs and message IDs to match those used at the time of the fake email's target era, and then get the email client to repopulate all of the emails with the fake emails sandwiched in (you can't just drop it in a folder and have it show up). This does not include gaining access to the target's device, physically or remotely, and does not include breaking into the email client's own servers if email is accessed via a web browser.

Wider implications

This also means that by 2023, after being hacked by Greg in 2021, LO had not changed her email passwords or Greg maintained silent, unnoticed access to an iCloud account. There are also accusations that Greg "got into her computer" and either made it seem like things were being sent from her device or was actually sending things from it. The former could be accomplished through email login and would not require getting into her computer. The latter requires more than a wifi password. He would have had to install some kind of program that gives him undetected backdoor access that bypasses the computer's firewall, know when LO is NOT using her laptop to create a silent remote session (otherwise she would see the cursor moving around doing things), upload the files to a hidden folder, send the stuff and cover his tracks.

In the simplest case, LO would have to maintain the same password and not use any form of authentication despite gmail not letting me sign in to a device I already own without freaking the fuck out on me and alerting every device in the room.

This also means that despite having the technical ability to do all this he has only used this expertise to concoct a few relatively trivial discrepancies and nothing else, while keeping this ability so well under wraps that people close to him describe him as "not a computer guy".

▲ 19 r/urushi

I have been a fountain pen fiend for some time but my budget keeps me down at entry level. I follow this sub because I love seeing people post their urushi projects, but I don't know very much. I feel like this has to be urushi, given the other pens it was displayed with but I am curious what this finish/technique would be called? The only decorative style I am familiar with is maki-e but I think that is inlay? This looks like the Kaweko Steel Fire Blue finish, but I doubt it is scorched the same way. Powders? I'd love to know more if anyone has insight, thanks

TIL about this super wholesome way to use up pens, ink and paper - Letters Against Isolation

The idea is you write friendly letters to seniors living on their own or in assisted living facilities. Its a bit different from a pen pal because I don't think there's an expectation to get anything in return. Just something nice for a stranger.

Started by two young sisters at the beginning of the pandemic that were worried about their grandparents having to take on being isolated. The website says they have requests for letters in the thousands. Even if you don't plan on signing up, I thought it would be nice to share something positive people are doing to help each other out.

Are there other services like this? Outside of correspondence with folks you know irl, do any of yall participate in pen pal/letter exchanges?
