Im asking for your opinion on the original Napoleonic Code, not its legacy or how posterity sees it.

Napoleonic Code is thought to be revolutionary for law, and that it is the father of europe’s modern law
And all that.

But it had its flaws too, it was deeply patriarchal and Especially sexist.
Many laws exhibit this kind of ideology, and so much more of the stuff we can call ‘debate-able’

At the end of the day i can only say, it is the end of the journey that matters not the beginning, for all its flaws it still managed to produce offsprings still in use today.

As a big Fan of the father of the violet (one of his nicknames), i find his sexism and early racism a bit disturbing, which is why im here asking for your opinions too.

Hi guys i just observed some similarities between Napoleon’s attempt to end himself on april 12 After he abdicated and the end of Werther.

Napoleon loved goethe’s Young Werther novel, it is reported he read it at least 7 times, and took it to campaigns too

And not to mention the way he treated Goethe and the long discussion they had about the Novel.

When Napoleon was overwhelmed by despair during his first abdication, he tried poisoning himself using an 18 month old Poison sachet he had with him all the time, it was fruitless since it had degraded and did not do its job, Napoleon survived the attempt.

But what i observed is this:

Young Werther’s Ending:

Werther faced the total loss of the thing he loved the most, he grows disillusioned and can’t recognise his place in society, and decides that life will be unliveable without the thing he loved the most

Napoleon also felt it in a similar way when he lost his empire due to abdication , he felt su!cide was better than a disgraced life

Napoleon constantly remarked in throughout his life that “to live without glory is to die every day”

Werther wrote long letters just before he ended himself giving in grand written speeches

After napoleon’s failed attempt to wnd himself he summoned a close companion with the intention to give a grand speech philosophising about life

And at last werther pulled the trigger, but the shot failed to end him instantly and he went through 12hrs of agonising pain before dying.

And we all know Napoleon’s poison was expired and that it made him severely ill for hours

And interestingly enough one feeling overwhelmed both of them during their last moments; a deep sense of alienation in regards to their close companions
(As napoleon felt he was betrayed by his marshals)

But it doesn’t end here, werther is found on the floor dying by his servant who summons a doc

Napoleon was found by his companions and valets too who summoned a doctor

And that’s the end.

I am certainly not saying he tried to mimic werther or anything like that because that is ridiculous (ik some ppl would jump to that conclusion )

I was only surprised at how similar his attempt was to that of the novel he soo deeply loved.

I am merely pointing out similarities, i wonder if any of you noticed it too?

How much do we know about Himilce Barca?

Hi, i just wanted to ask about Himilce/Imilce Barca, the alleged wife of Hannibal barca

They say we know next to nothing about her and that the sources talking abt her are unreliable, so i am here asking for expert Opinion about the whole thing, if Hannibal even had a wife at all, considering he lived well into his 60s and was one of the most famous men alive and a noble its hard to think he was childless or without a wife, wether the character of Imilce (apparently a high ranking figure in the oretani ) truly his wife or smth, and wether they had children together or not, the sources and etc

It can be many things from arab imperialism to following late antiquity’s trend of shifting to monotheism, or even an attempt of Muhammad’s to reform arab culture/morality
Or to give the Arabs a centralised system

Can be many things
But i personally think the primary reason was Arab Imperialism and if it weren’t then at the end islam wouldn’t have manifested such gigantic arab led empires that spanned continents and its foreign subjects giving in so easily to their arab masters
After all religion is one way to flatter one into slavery, which is visible knowing islam survived 1450yrs
