Is Brazil worth visiting if I speak fluent Spanish but only passable Portuguese?

I'm planning to spend 6 months in Latin America. I will spend 3 in Peru, 1 in Argentina, and 1 in Mexico. I'm trying to decide where to spend the fourth one as there isn't really anywhere else I want to go to besides Puerto Rico and potentially Brazil, but I think it's a bit too expensive for me. I've already been to Guatemala.

I speak fluent Spanish but only A2 to B1 Portuguese. I would be able to get by, but it would be difficult to do much more than that. I have about 8 months to practice, but I only have an hour of time per day that I can set aside to practice.

Being able to speak the local language decently well at minimum is very important to me because I want to be able to meet people who are from the country without worrying about if they speak English. I don't want to have to rely on people speaking English and I don't want to hang out around only foreigners.

Is Brazil good enough to spend the next 8 months working on Portuguese? Or should I just stick to Spanish-speaking countries? If I were to go to Brazil, what city would be a good place to spend 1 month in?

How do I know how much meat, fruit, and honey to consume?

I want to try out the animal based diet to see how I feel and how I perform athletically. I'm 22M, 182cm/6'0", and 68kg/150lb. I lift 3 times a week and I do a cardio workout of some sort 3 times a week (and the other four days I do a short run of 1-2km except for the uncommon day that I don't have enough time).

However I don't know what ratio of meat, fruit, and honey to consume. I'm assuming only a spoon or two of honey per day but I'm not sure about meat and fruit. Is 10g of 80/20 ground beef per kg of body weight a good amount (680g or 1.5lb in my case)? What about fruit? How do I know I'm not overeating fruit?

I know I omitted raw dairy. The only dairy I currently eat is cheese because it's the only dairy I like and I don't eat much because I don't care for it much. Raw dairy is pretty expensive where I live so I'm probably just going to cut dairy out of my diet completely since it's expensive and I don't like it. Maybe in the future I'll start drinking raw milk though.

Does anyone else enjoy running in the heat?

As a disclaimer, where I live the max temperature every year is usually between 33 and 36. Last year it was 35 and this year it was 33 (today) and tomorrow it's supposed to be 35-36. However it is very humid where I live so 33 degrees felt like 40. I also have access to air conditioning after my run.

Yesterday was the first day of a heatwave. Every time there is a heatwave is when I'm most motivated to run. I don't know what about it makes me want to run. I genuinely enjoy it. I guess I just enjoy the hot air making me feel almost like I'm in an oven and being drenched in sweat.

It's not like I do it because it's more difficult like how Goggins runs because he hates it. I actually think it's easier to run when it's hot than when it's cold. I remember that time when Goggins ran that race in death valley and they asked him about the heat and he said that he didn't even notice it. Obviously 40 is way cooler than 51 but I can see how he didn't notice it (even if he just meant it didn't affect him and not that he literally didn't notice it).

Am I the only one here who is of this opinion?

  • No importa cuanta humedad / sequedad haya

I broke my PR with almost no training

I do basically no cardio and I set yet another PR. Last year my PR for the mile was 6:18 and I started last June by running 6:31, then 6:16, and then 5:59. After that I got bored and since then I've done very little training.

Today was the first day of a heatwave where I live so I decided to go on a short run. I noticed my pace was 5:35 when I started so I decided to try to break my PR of 5:59. I ran a 5:57 mile. I am very proud of this although I know no one irl cares so I'm posting here (I'm sure not many people care here either though).

I am also disappointed because if I'm breaking my PR every single time without training it means I am leaving something left in the tank. I personally believe I can run a mile in at least 5:30 maybe even faster before I need to start training to improve my time. Tomorrow I will try again with a target time of 5:50.

Looking for the right place to settle down indefinitely

I'm 22M and have lived with my parents my entire life. I am working on saving $100k as fast as possible because I want to build a tiny home so I can move out without ever having to pay rent. My parents have told me I can continue living with them as long as I want.

My idea is to buy as much land as I can in the right location with up to $30k. I will use the other $70k to build the house from the ground up. Both numbers are very rough estimates and I would have no problem going over or under a bit but obviously not too much. I want the house to be about 400 sqft and I want it to be on at least 1/2 to 1 acre of land. If I end up with money leftover that would be great but if not that's what the $100k is for.

I mentioned the right location in the last paragraph. For me this is what I'm looking for:

  • Doesn't have cold winters (cold defined as 45 degree daytime temperatures or colder)
  • Not extremely gloomy
  • Somewhere that the lone star tick does not have established populations
  • Within a 30-45 minute drive of a city of at least 200k people
  • Somewhere that chickens are permitted
  • Would really prefer that there were mountains in the background
  • Humidity/dryness does not matter whatsoever
  • Somewhere that it won't be extremely difficult to find a job. It seems New Mexico would be the best fit for me but I know New Mexico doesn't have the greatest job market

Currently I live in Indiana. I hate it here because I have access to none of the things I'm looking for. I hate the cold the most and Indiana is very cold in the winter. To put things into perspective, I prefer 90 degrees over 60 degrees.

However because of my fear of trying to build a tiny home in a place where I have no support system (doing it near my hometown is daunting enough) I still haven't ruled out somewhere near where I live now. I know I need to get out of my comfort zone though because if I don't I'll regret it every winter.

Afraid that I have permanent brain damage

I'm going to be doing a sleep test soon to see if I have sleep apnea but I'm spiraling thinking maybe I've caused permanent brain damage by not taking it earlier. Of course there's no guarantee this is sleep apnea.

I have not had a single moment of brain clarity since November. I have bad brain fog. It's basically like I'm in a cloud 24/7. I'm also tired 24/7 no matter how much or how little I sleep. I can sleep 6 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, etc and still feel tired so it's not like I'm sleeping too little or too much. Sometimes I sleep until I wake up and can't fall back asleep because I've slept for so long (usually around 14 hours) but I'm still tired.

However my sleep quality feels the exact same. I used to very rarely wake up and I still very rarely wake up. I don't feel like I'm sleeping lightly. I feel like I sleep the exact same way as before except I never wake up refreshed. I know this isn't proof of anything I just know many people with sleep apnea report that they don't sleep well.

I also have poor memory (both short-term and long-term but especially short-term). I will sometimes forget what I was talking about with someone just a few minutes after we stopped talking about that thing.

I'm only 22M but my brother and dad both have sleep apnea. I'm told I don't snore though and both of them had really bad snoring. I'm skinny (68kg at 182cm) but I have had a very unhealthy diet the past few years so if I have sleep apnea it's probably because of that.

This all started suddenly at the end of November. In February I went to my doctor and he said I should get a sleep test done but I was lazy and didn't do it. I've decided if I ever want to go back to normal I should try to figure out what's going on and I think a sleep test is the best place to start. I'm just afraid it's too late to do anything but prevent further damage.

Should I move to a desert?

I'm absolutely terrified of alpha-gal syndrome. I think I'd rather die than have to go back to eating carbs or only eat poultry. I currently live in NE Indiana and today I went to a nature preserve and now I'm overthinking it because maybe I got bit by a lone star tick. I did a thorough tick check and didn't find anything but I don't think I'm interested in going into nature anymore because of the risk of loan star ticks. I was only wearing a t-shirt, shorts, shoes, and socks because it was too hot to be comfortably outside in long sleeves and long pants but I definitely should have.

Apparently they aren't even that common here but where I live there is high humidity year-round so they could be here. I'm thinking maybe I should move to a desert because they can't survive there so unless they mutilate them to be able to survive in low humidity I won't have to worry about them even if they keep dropping them.

I don't think I'd enjoy living in a desert because I actually like high humidity and my skin is too pale for a place like Arizona that has such a high UVI but I guess it would be better than not being able to go in nature without risking a red meat allergy.

Would you become very addicted to a drug that you have never been addicted to for $1.5M CAD?

This drug can be anything harmful and addictive enough to be reasonably considered a drug. Cigarettes, alcohol, heroine, crack, etc. You just have to have never been addicted to this thing.

You will become so addicted that it is a genuine struggle to become free from your addiction. You also risk always being addicted to it even if you manage to get to a place where you can resist it even though whenever you see it or think of it you want some. However you are guaranteed to not die from the drug within the next 10 years.

I know some people will say they would because they can just use some of the money on rehab, but before you do that you have to realize that it will be as if you have been using this drug for years. The only difference is the only damage that will be done to your body is the damage that is done after taking the money. There's no guarantee you will be able to get yourself to go to rehab even though you will have the money for it because that's how addiction works.

Does living in the wrong climate and/or latitude affect sunburns?

I've heard seed oils are the reason for sunburns and I've just recently stopped eating them so I don't know if that's true or not. I've heard some people say they get sunburns even though they don't eat seed oils anymore so I'm not confident this will stop my sunburn problem.

I live in northern Indiana, USA, which is very far south compared to Germany, Denmark, and Scotland (where most of my ancestry comes from). Every time I spend time in the sun even if I use sunscreen (I know it's bad but I'm so tired of getting sunburns so I tried it anyway) because I have very pale skin although it's usually just my face and neck because those are the only places that refuse to tan. I can't always use a sunhat but I do whenever possible.

I'm tired of getting sunburns, especially because if I get one on my forehead I get a headache for a few days. I'm not sure if it's the seed oils, the wrong latitude, both, or something else. Does anyone have any advice? Or as I stop eating seed oils will the sunburns go away?

Paul says to not fear the sun but I really should because I get sunburnt very easily. It seems like Paul does get sunburnt sometimes too because his skin seems a bit red in some videos, but I could be wrong. I've heard people say I need to gradually expose myself to the sun, but I work inside so I don't have the time to do that because by the time I finally develop a tan on my face it will be fall and I'll use it for a few weeks before it's unnecessary and the low UVI in the winter will cause it to go away.

How much do I need to save for 6-7 months in Latin America?

I am on track to have $24k USD saved by the beginning of October and $28.5k saved by mid November. In my country it's cold from mid October through mid May so I want to leave sometime around early to mid October and return sometime around mid to late May.

My plan is to spend like I do in my country. Occasional treats and fun/touristy stuff, but I won't be living like I'm a tourist for 6 months. As a conservative estimate so I don't come with too little money I estimate $1.5k per month and $2k for planes as I won't be moving around a ton.

This puts me at $12.5k if I'm gone for 2 months; however, something tells me I should save more money just in case I run out even though before emergency unforseen expenses my total expected expenses are almost half of $24k.

Do you think I should go when I want to in October or should I wait another month and a half?

How to navigate visiting countries where food is a big part of the culture

I'm planning to spend 4-5 months in Latin America from roughly November through March. I plan to only go to 2-3 cities so I actually have a chance to meet locals and make friends with locals.

The problem is I'm on carnivore and I know food is a very important part of Latin American cultures. I already went to Guatemala for a couple months and most friends I made wanted to cook for me at some point. I wasn't doing carnivore then so it was no problem. I'm assuming it will be the same this time and I know none of the food will be carnivore. I won't be able to try any of the local dishes and most Latin Americans I meet are really eager to share foods from their cultures and I will feel so bad saying no.

I'm afraid it will put a strain on any friendships I make and/or make it harder to make friends. It's hard enough on the social life in the US. Imagine trying to have a social life in a country where food is an even more important part of socializing.

I think it would be fine to cheat if I was only going for a couple weeks, but I don't want to feel terrible for 4+ months. Tbh idk how I would feel if I cheat because I haven't yet but I'm expecting to feel worse than I feel now.

Am I overthinking this? Has anyone been in a similar situation? Do you have any advice for me?

Are all cotton shirts rough?

I got a Gildan cotton shirt for $4 because it's 100% cotton and I didn't want to spend $40 per shirt if I didn't have to. I'm used to polyester and the cotton shirt is much more breathable (it feels way baggier than it actually is which I like), but the shirt feels very rough on the skin.

Is this normal for cotton shirts? If not, which shirts are smooth on the skin? I realize it might just be because it's $4 and I didn't buy it expecting it to be perfect but I thought I'd try one before spending $240 on shirts when I could potentially have spent $24 instead.

Is there any reason for me to not get a Prius?

I'm 22 and I'm looking to buy my first car. Until now I've driven my parents' Toyota Sienna. However they don't allow me to go more than an hour away from our city and the MPG on the Sienna is horrendous so I'm looking to buy my own car.

Literally all I care about is getting from point A to point B with a high MPG and low maintenance costs and I don't want the car to cost more than $12k (preferably less). I don't care about fancy cars or if my car is ugly. Basically I want to spend as little on my car as possible when accounting for everything (cost of car, gas, insurance, maintenance, etc). I wouldn't even own a car if it weren't necessary here in the US.

Are there any cars that are better for me? Here a used Prius costs $8k to $12k. I know I could get a different beater for $5k or less but the MPG would likely be much lower so the Prius seems more worth it to me because it will eventually pay for itself

Periodontal disease is forcing me to relocate

I live in the US and have periodontal disease so it is very expensive. I've already had two tooth infections (one in November and one a month ago) and there is a third tooth that needs a root canal because eventually it will become infected. Luckily I was in Latin America when I had the first one so it was only $600 USD for all the visits, including the root canal and the crown.

Here in the US just the root canal and the crown added up to $2.5k. I have insurance but I already reached the yearly limit so I had to pay $2.5k out of pocket. I've decided the only reasonable course of action for me is to find a job near the Mexican border ASAP so I can get my dental care done in Mexico without spending hundreds of dollars on flights.

It's just sad that I have no choice but to move far away from my hometown because dental care is so expensive here. It's probably not cheap in Mexico either, but I know I will save a lot of money. I guess I deserve this though.

Meijer has ground beef for $3.99/lb

I know not everyone here lives near a Meijer or even in the US but at my Meijer it's $3.99/lb with limit of 5 3lb packages. Not sure if they have this sale at every Meijer but maybe this will help someone.

I've never bought Meijer ground beef because it's always so expensive so idk what the quality is like but I'm too broke to be worried about quality lol
