Toric Movement

There was a request for macro shot of the Toric movement, so here it is.

TL;DR: Some fancy-pants words around what Parmigiani has done to make the time-only movement in the Toric really stand out. Enjoy the photos.

The macro shots highlight specific details of the PF780 movement that should be admired. Along the way, I’ll point out proprietary elements of the movement that only a fully integrated manufacture like Parmigiani (with Vaucher) can achieve.

  1. The overall architecture of the movement is rather unique, with the linear form of the three main plates, the double barrels, and the escapement along with their respective bridges. This is a nice way to make the movement stand out in a proprietary way, as you don’t see a time-only movement designed this way.

  2. The main plates are made from rose gold and decorated with a fine double-guilloché pattern called Côtes de Fleurier. This pattern is proprietary to PF. Besides PF, it is worth noting that F.P. Journe is one other manufacturer that uses rose gold for the movement plates in place of traditional brass. Patek, VC, and AP tend to use rhodium-plated brass for their movement plates. I’ll let you draw your own conclusion from that.

  3. As with any brand at this level, the edges of the main plates feature extensive anglage, with hand-beveled and mirror-polished chamfers. However, an argument has been made that many brands today make movement design decisions to help make hand decoration and finishing easier to achieve.

  4. The case screws are proprietary with a double-hole design. This means only PF has the tooling to open the case back to service the watch. Romain Gauthier is another manufacturer that comes to mind that also produces proprietary screws. This level of attention shows off the depth of PF’s in-house capabilities.

  5. If you look closer, you will find the baseplate with a sandblasted finish. You’ll catch a glimpse of this near the escapement and below the double barrel. Most other manufacturers will finish this with a circular pattern called perlage. In fact, the Tonda movements have this decoration on the baseplate. This shows the extra effort PF has gone into the decoration of the PF780.

  6. Finally, Michel Parmigiani’s signature can be found on every Toric movement. I like that this as a personal seal of his approval.

Toric to close out the work week

I recently had a great exchange with our Mod and he got me thinking about what really makes the design language of Parmigiani different from other brands. I landed on the knurled bezel as the unifying feature between the Toric and Tonda. Strangely, I can’t think of another watch brand that employs this level of subtlety to bring harmony to their range. Do you agree?

Land-dwellers are… landing. Appreciation thread

Noticed more posts of the Land-dweller recently. Picked up a 36cm a week ago. Have to say, it is an enjoyable watch to wear. Post yours if you have it. Did you get the 36mm or 40mm?

Old and older Day Dates (1803 and 18038)

Had the chance to stack my linen dial 18038 next to a 1803. There is an x-factor about the 1803 that just makes it look so special. Maybe it’s the alpha hands, the dial colour or the finer fluted bezel (or even all of the above) that makes the 1803 pop. For me, the side-by-side makes the four digit reference hard to beat.

Rimowa and Rolex

Would it be wishful thinking to have these two brands collaborate together?

How many pairs do you have on rotation?

From L to R: Fullcount DCRM1001, Pure Blue Japan WSB-019 double slub, Momotaro MXJE1101, Levi’s Made & Crafted x Frenchtrotter and Fullcount DCRM1001W

Happy weekend everyone!

While I have five pairs on rotation, I am really wearing two pairs, the PBJ and Momotaro, most frequent. They both happen to be narrow cut. The Fullcounts are a more relaxed fit. The Levi’s are straight cuts.

That got me thinking that two pairs in similar cuts are likely the optimal pairs rotation for me.

How many pairs you have on rotation? Are they the same or similar cut? Are you drawn to specific pairs over others?

[Raymond Weil] The Fifty

38mm - check. Vintage Valjoux 23 New Old Stock - check. Clean 2 counter chronograph lay out - check.

For anyone who enjoys chronographs, this is a great watch to own.

What I love about this most is the clicking and tactile feel of winding the movement. Very satisfying.

There is also quite a lot of detail in the dial from the frosted finishing, the horizontal and vertical engraved lines and the fine concentric decoration of the tachymeter.

The cons, if I may, include the hour hands could have been black polished. The blue chrono hands are not heat blued. Would have preferred a blue croc or alligator strap at this price. However these are nitpicks rather than real con.

▲ 20 r/burgers

From One Fattened Calf in Singapore. In-house baked potato bun with 150g of grass fed beef, caramelised onions, sliced red onions, pickles and two slabs of grass fed butter. No lettuce or tomato as the proprietor believes his burger is best without them. Also served dine-in only.

The patty had a great crust on it, achieved with a blow torch.

Very satisfying.
