Is Oakland California’s most misunderstood city?

I know Oakland gets a lot of criticism, but for those who have actually lived there, what keeps you there? Is it the neighborhoods, weather, food, culture, access to nature, or something else? I’m curious what the day to day experience is really like beyond the headlines.

What’s one city people are overestimating and one they’re overlooking?

What city is growing quickly today, but for reasons you think won’t hold up long term?

And on the flip side, what’s a city that isn’t getting enough attention despite having strong long-term prospects?

Basically: what’s the most overrated boomtown and the most underrated city right now, and why?

Prospect seeking a second opinion while working with a wirehouse

Had a very qualified prospect reach out who already works with an advisor at a large wirehouse but wants in his words fiduciary second opinion on their overall financial situation and some upcoming planning decisions which includes what to do with stock compensation and life events.

For context, I’m a solo firm about 7 years in, and lately I’ve been attracting a lot more high-income/high-AUM prospects so I am very picky and end up declining anything not ideal (larger aum with planning). Had three prospects book yesterday alone.

I don’t offer one-time plans or standalone consulting engagements, I have intentionally moved away from that model. I’m also not particularly interested in being the financial planning side piece while the primary relationship stays elsewhere.

For those who focus on ongoing planning and wealth management relationships, how do you handle these situations? Do you make exceptions, charge a separate fee, or politely decline if there isn’t potential for an ongoing engagement without aum?

How do you handle ‘average firm return’ questions?

A prospect asked me what our “average firm return” is. I explained we don’t have a single number because clients are in different portfolios with different timing, risk levels, and cash flows, but he pushed back and said every firm should be able to give one and all the other firms told him.

How do you all handle this question without misleading prospects or overcomplicating the conversation?

Does Seattle deserve its “far left” reputation?

Would most people consider Seattle politics to be far left? From the outside looking in, it seems like Seattle is often viewed as one of the more progressive cities in the U.S., especially on issues like taxation, homelessness policy, policing, and social programs.

I’m curious whether residents feel the “far left” label is accurate, or if that’s more of a perception driven by national media and political commentators.
