I now only collect 5 things:

  1. Any and all Porsche 993 GT2 including these Mattel Creation versions and the Hot Wheels 993 GT2.
  2. Gulf Cars
  3. BMWs in Alpine White with the M colors.
  4. RWB Porsches
  5. Red Ferraris

Today, the Playstation 993 arrived in the mail, yesterday I found the Gulf Racing 917K. Hopefully tomorrow I find the BMW M4 GT3 to round out a near perfect week of collecting! 3/5 ain't bad at all!

Settings for capturing speed with the DJI Action 6

One of the biggest obstacles of recording POV driving is that he sensation of speed is hard to capture. Even at 130mph+ it seems slower than experiencing it in person. After many trials, I come up with a setup I'm happy with.

I'm using a DJI Action 6, but these same settings can be adapted to almost any camera.

There are three things I find most important in capturing the sensation of speed:

Audio - Recording the exhaust and engine noise. I have a DJI Mic 2 magnetically mounted near the license plate. Gain is set to -12.

Motion Blur - That cinematic look. The environment, lines and road blur, whisking by. To accomplish this, I lock the shutter speed to 1/60. In daylight, this results in a blown out, overly bright video. So I use a K&F ND64 filter to darken the shot.

FOV - This is set to Ultrawide with Rocksteady OFF. Letting the video shake a bit, to me, captures the chaos a bit more, adding to that sensation of speed. If you want to use Rocksteady, the camera will crop the frame, reducing FOV. I use the DJI FOV Boost Lens to get that FOV back, plus some. My ND filters, however, do not fit over the FOV boost lens. We need a ND filter that will fit over the FOV boost lens in order to lock shutter speed at 1/60, otherwise the video will be blown out.

I think it worked out pretty well. It still seems a bit slower than it does in real life, but it's a big improvement over my older footage where I just shot everything on auto.

Here are my settings for this video:

4k 16:9

30fps

5800K

1/60

100-800 ISO

D-LogM

F/4

NR -2

Texture -2

Ultrawide - NO FOV LENS!

Rocksteady OFF

First time at Buttonwillow The Circuit! Fastest Lap: 02:00:65

Hitting 132 mph on the front straight wasn't fast enough to get a sub 2... hopefully next time!

Between my F80s and G82, my G87 is the most fun to drive.

I've owned an F80 M3 Base, F80 M3 CS and a G82 M4 Comp X-Drive (Along with a E21, E30, F30 328i, F30 340i, and three i3's) and the G87 is the most fun bimmer I've ever owned. Maybe that will change one day if I ever find the E46 dream spec, but for now, I really love driving the M2 to the gym, in the canyons, and on the track.

Mechanical Solitude

Trying something new with my new DJI Action 6. Using a variable ND filter which allows me to lock in the shutter speed to 1/60 without blowing out the shot. This allows for a bit more motion blur and a "cinematic" feel.

There is a bit of vignetting with this filter. You can see some dark discoloration in the bottom left corner of the video. It's a cheaper variable filter that uses polarization to adjust the degree of darkness, which leads to vignetting. I'm going to try a K&F variable filter next, which is a brand I trust from their mirrorless and DSLR filters.

I also have a set of K&F traditional ND filters including a ND64 to try and bring it down even more and perhaps try to get more motion blur at a slower shutter speed.

Please let me know what you all think about the motion blur.

Going through my collection for donation/s@le and set these aside as keepers!

The 964 was signed by Magnus Walker when I ran into him at a Cars & Coffee Meet. I remember thinking he might be there so I brought this just in case. Unfortunately I forgot to bring a Sharpie, so the signature is hard to see. This was on my wall, but I put it away for a cleaner look.

My M&M Kool Kombi - actually might give this one up. As much as I like it, it isn’t on display in my office. A new owner would treat it better.

917K Gulf - never giving this up! I collect all Gulf cars. And yes, I have an open version in my display case.

These are all the carded STs I have. I have a few Gulf STs (Ford GT40, Indy, 356A, RS2000), but those are open and on display.

I’m getting rid of about 75% of my collection (over 1000 cars easy). Should I keep these?

36 miles of windy road came to an end here. Rain storm caused major damage in December and there is no indication of when it will reopen. The last closure lasted over 2 years.
