What is it like living in Guyana, the world's fastest-growing economy?

I've been reading about how quickly Guyana has been growing economically over the last few years, but I don't know much about what that actually means for the people who live there.

Has everyday life changed much? I'd love to hear what it's like from people who live there.

What was Bangalore like before the IT boom?

I'm a Gen Z Bangalorean, and I've become really curious about what Bangalore was like before the IT boom. From what I've read, it was like a mid-sized planned city with a lot of PSUs and research institutes, but I'd genuinely love to hear from people who actually lived through that time or even those whose parents or grandparents did. What was everyday life like? what are some things people today wouldn't know about old Bangalore?

What would you say is the American equivalent of Goa, India?

i'm from India, and I've always thought about this.

Goa is probably India's most famous beach destination. It's full of beaches, green hills, a huge tourism industry (basically the entire economy of the region), and is known as the country's party capital. Kinda like our version of Pattaya/Bali. but one thing that i like about it is that it's almost entirely low-rise. You don't really see skylines or lots of tall buildings, which gives it a really relaxed feel.

I know there probably isn't a perfect equivalent, but Is there anywhere in the US that comes closest to this description?

What was everyday life like in British Calcutta during the late 1800s?

Calcutta was the capital and the largest city of British India for much of the late 1800s, so I've always been curious about what everyday life there was actually like.

Anyone who's more knowledgeable about Indian history than I am, feel free to fill me in. What was the city like for the average Indian person at that point in time ?

What is it like living in Austin, Texas right now?

Austin seems like it has changed a lot in recent years, with tech companies moving in and the city growing quickly.

I only really know it as a growing tech city, so I’m curious what it’s actually like to live there now ?

What's it like living in New York City's neighbor, Jersey City?

Jersey City seems to have a lot of the benefits of being next to New York City while having its own identity.

For people who live there, what's everyday life like?

What’s it actually like living in Salt Lake / New Town? Is it as good as it looks?

I’m originally Bengali but I was raised outside bengal, so I’ve always been a bit curious about this.

Whenever I visit Kolkata, Salt Lake and New Town feel quite different from the rest of the city tbh. It's got cleaner roads, newer buildings, IT hubs, and a more planned vibe overall.

But I’ve never actually lived there day to day, so I wanted to ask people who do, what’s it really like?

How different was Kolkata before the 1980s?

Growing up, we've always heard that Kolkata was once one of the richest and most important cities in the country, but for our generation, it's hard to understand what that actually felt like.

For those who remember that time or heard stories from parents and grandparents, what's something about old Kolkata that younger people today would find surprising or hard to believe?

What's it like living in NYC's most suburban borough, Staten Island?

Staten Island seems much more suburban than the image most people have of NYC.

What's the most unintentionally desi thing your parents did that you only realized wasn't normal when you got older?

For me, there were a lot of things I just assumed every family did growing up, only to find out later they were very much a desi-parent thing.

Could be something funny, confusing, wholesome, or mildly traumatizing, anything basically.

What's your best example?

What's it like living in one of America's safest cities, Irvine, California?

I'm not from the US but I've heard Irvine has a reputation for being extremely safe, clean and well-planned, with having a large Asian population. For people who live there or grew up there, what's everyday life actually like?

What was daily life actually like for upper-class Americans in the late 1800s?

Not talking about the ultra-wealthy industrialists like Rockefeller or Carnegie, but upper class families who were still clearly well-off.

What did their day-to-day life actually look like for them ?

Also, what were some everyday challenges ordinary people faced at the time that this group largely didn’t have to deal with?

What was daily life actually like in major US cities in the 1890s?

Not sure if this is the right sub, but I thought it would be an interesting place to ask.

I’ve kinda been curious about what everyday life was like in america before the 1900s.

Not the big historical events, just the normal day-to-day experience in places like New York, Chicago or Boston.

What would life have looked like then?

If anyone here knows about the period or is into history, I’d really love your perspective.

What's the highest-paying career path you've seen someone build while staying in Kolkata?

Genuinely curious.

Are there people here earning ₹70L+ and still based in Kolkata?

What do they do for work—remote, business, finance, tech, something else?

Just trying to understand what those paths actually look like here.

As an outsider, why doesn't America seem to have the same shopping mall culture as many Asian countries?

This might be completely wrong, but it's an impression I've gotten from American movies, TV shows, YouTube videos, and social media.

In most Asian countries, malls are a huge part of social life. People don't just go there to shop—they go to hang out with friends, eat, watch movies, escape the heat, spend time with family, etc.

For some reason, I don't get the same impression from the US. When I think of American social life, I think of restaurants, bars, parks, sporting events, downtown areas, house parties, and so on, but not malls.

Am I completely off base, or are malls generally less central to everyday life in the US than they are in many Asian countries?
