Nvidia is a perfect example of what's wrong in this new AI Industry

They have generated incredible wealth for themselves. They are investing massively in infrastructure, GPUs, datacenters, and other areas. However, their employee growth has been little to none. The growth that we have seen has mostly been through friends/family. Little new expertise has been brought into the company. They seem to be on a trajectory of internal and technology failure. Many new AI focused companies are doing the same thing. It's less about the human and employees that typically companies are built around. Nvidia only cares about the machines its building.

Their market cap has gone up 10x in 4 years, yet the employee headcount has grown by 50%, if that. Most of that is on the business and sales side. Not tech as that's being offloaded to "AI".

have a weird backup problem

I went from backing up to the cloud to backing up to local harddrives. I have 2x 10TB drives (USB), and 2x smaller 2TB drives (USB). For whatever reason I decided to backup the same thing to all 4 drives. It's less than 2TB so it fits all drives. For the 10TB drives, I just do another copy.

All of this takes an exceptionally long time. Upwards of several days to just backup 1TB. So my question for the experts here is:

  1. How do I make this more efficient? Should I setup a NAS or some other server for my drives and move away from USB altogether?
  2. Is there any value backing up to 4 drives? This is mission critical data: media/pictures, and development code.

Any ideas/thoughts are much appreciated!

I watched the Big Short Again

There's so much of this movie that I respect and appreciate. I know they exagerrated in some areas, but most of it is factual.

One thing I didn't realize is much adversity Michael Burry has gone through in his life. Losing his eye to cancer, dealing with "getting eaten inside" as he makes contra-bets. It's like he is one of few saying the empire has no clothes, and having to fight against the tide.

With all that said, I'm quite concerned - impressed - about his latest tweets. Does he really think the entire tech market is going to dive? The market has a ton of momentum with AI / robotics and other investments. It's all very anti-human sadly, as so many humans will lose their jobs. But his short ideas and other investments seem sound.

Anyone have a pro/con view of Michael's tweets or do you just go all in with his investment thesis?

any luck getting warrant on Nokian tires?

Have some that are failing after just 2 years. Tread tearing up in some areas. I understand Nokian has a 5 year warranty but it can be a pain to get the warranty paid out.

Anyone have any experience with this?

(note title should say warranty but I can't update it)

codex eating more tokens this week?

My burn rate seemed way faster than normal. Burned 50% of my 1 week alottment in just 2 days. Not sure if it's something I was doing, or did codex pullback on amount of tokens you get per week with a $100/month plan?

is there anyway to report people that post offensive comments and then delete them?

This seems to happen quite frequently. Someone will post some extremely offensive comment reply because they know it will show up on your feed. Then immediately delete the comment. They'll also block you so you can't respond to them at all.

Is there any way to report people who exploit this mechanism to avoid being moderated? I tried reddit.com/report but it requires a link. The link doesn't work because the message was deleted.

best way to remove a stripped screw from a burner?

Have a gas cooktop with an igniter. The igniter is screw in with a support plate on the back. Of course the area has gotten grease/moisture over the years so the screw is "rusty" and easily stripped.

What's the best way these days to remove screws like this these days? I have one of those drill/screw remover kits but it seems iffy. Is it better just to create a robertson square where the philips screw head was, or make it a flat head?

thanks!

spam box getting flooded with almost 100 spam emails per day?

The Google spam filter is doing it's job but this is getting really excessive. Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

Had this happen recently. They messaged me for X role. It looked interesting so I said I'm interested. They asked for my phone number. I checked out the recruiter and they looked legit so I (stupidly) respond through linkedin message system with my phone number. Then nothing, and they wouldn't even respond 1 week later when I asked several times if they will be contacting me.

I've noticed an uptick in spam calls on that phone as well. So best I can tell they ghosted me/moved on, or gave my phone number to a spam company.

How do you report recruiters like this?

Maybe it's just a coincidence but I've found repeatedly after 2am EST that codex makes far more mistakes than before. This is the same model, same code, same everything. It starts stumbling in many areas, and making junior mistakes.

Is this because of resource/load issues? Does OpenAI dumb down their models if there is too many people using the resources?

It's so damn addictive. I find I spend way too much time coding up my apps. Going back/forth with different tools, seeing the results, fixing my prompts, going through it again. The progress can be huge, then frustrating, then backwards, but then back to huge again.

I can blow through an entire day + night doing this. It doesn't seem good for my health. Any advice on how to step away? 😉

So I received a new stratos about. 2 years ago. Really like it. One issue, I notice the rolling bar underneath isnt as aggressive as my shark rotator. In fact the bar sometimes stops rolling if there's too much friction.

Did shark do something with their newer designs to reduce the speed of the roll bar?

--

Sigh, since reddit is mostly a hit/miss on these types of questions I found AI research to be far more useful. Short answer is yes - they did change the design with two rollers, and reduced the speed of the brushroller.

Went to temu to buy something. I get all these event awards that add up to $200. I'm like great I just need to buy one thing to get the credit. Nope... Had to keep buying and I never got it.

So why is temu so scammy like this now??

--

Since there's some weird commentors here (speaking to you wintercreeper) additional info.

YES this came through on the temu app saying a special event and because of what I bought before I get $200+ credit. It was one of those spin for $50 and then it adds bonuses etc..

Now the point is it says to choose and purchase one additional item. I purchase an item and it says your closer buy another etc... it never actually gives me the credit oven though it indicated multiple times it would.

This is unscrupulous marketing. It gives people real bad vibes on temu. It seems similar to the original free credit it gave you when temu started a couple years ago but niw it strings you along and never gives you credit at all
