I'm starting to make solo stuff and I want to do a noise rock/post hardcore kinda thing. I really like bands like Mclusky, Metz, Hammerhead, Jesus Lizard, Jawbox, Unwound, Refused, etc.

My question: I'm a drummer traditionally trying to pickup the guitar. I want to know, what kinda of chords are used in noise rock and what techniques are utilized? Do you just kinda make up your own chords to get the sound you want or do you use traditional chords more often? And what kind of effects do you typically use?

So I've already been into garage punk related stuff since I was younger. Jay Reatard, Ty Segal, The Briefs, Bass Drum of Death, New Bomb Turks, Generacion Suicida, Mean Jeans, and of course the classic stuff like The Gun Club.

With this genre, obviously it integrates electronic elements and is more of a one-man band concept like with Wavves. It's not exactly a style that's brand new by any means, but what seems interesting about it is there's more of an anyone can do it element to it similar to the whole SoundCloud rap concept. Reminds me of the idea behind dudes like Atom and His Package. It's obviously taking aesthetic cues from more 2000s Internet culture, mixed with the satirical dark imagery of certain elements of electronic and industrial music.

So I guess my question, what about this genre is most appealing to you guys? The experimentation? The idea of doing it yourself without needing a full band? Do you see this as a revamp of older styles, or something completely different? It's exciting to see something like this come out when hardcore is really coming back in the sub-mainstream spotlight, and it seems like a middle finger to the whole thing.

I've been involved in the punk community for a while now, and I'm trying to clean up my life and meet like-minded people. Any suggestions are appreciated. 30 yo M, sober for 7 years now. Musician, artist, family dude, etc.

Nicotine is my only vice left. Sober for 6 years total, I just really want to quit but am having a hard time with it. It would be helpful if I had some type of support buddy. Any thoughts or people looking for something similar?
