Recommend me some stuff I’ve probably never heard before

I’m trying to branch out in my jazz listening, I tend to stay in the lane of hardbop, blues, and some fusion stuff (more fusion recommended listening would be much appreciated). I don’t go out of my way to listen to a ton of bebop, modal, or avant-garde very much.

Anything with interesting/cool piano parts is an easy win, I’m a pianist and always looking for cool piano parts to listen to. Just send me whatever you like listening to!

If this is too vague my bad.

What would be some good shoes/boots to wear with this outfit?

Kind of leaning towards boots, something classic and versatile would be nice.

Is a budget of around $100 too little?

Pants sizing advice for large man

Howdy! I’m a bigger guy with wide hips and thighs, and I’m trying to get new pants, but I don’t really know what size or cut will look the best. The pants I’m wearing right now are sized at 40W 30L and they fit well I think, even around my natural waist, but when I measure that I get a result of like 44 inches. This is making me confused because I don’t know if a 44W pant would fit well or be too big, or if 40W is too small and I just don’t realize how bad it looks.

The cut is relaxed fit and I’m thinking about getting straight fit pants because the relaxed fit makes my hips look really really wide compared to my legs, but maybe it’s necessary?

Please help, much love.

Jazz Tees?

I’ve been expanding my wardrobe recently and I want to get some graphic tees that represent the music I listen to. This has been easy with rock and pop artists I listen to, but I’m having hard time finding anything related to jazz that doesn’t look vague and tacky or is just a guy’s face on it. Like don’t get me wrong I love Thelonious Monk, but I don’t know how many people would recognize him from just his face on a tee.

If you have any t-shirts with album covers or cool jazz related designs on them, or just places that would be good for getting cool pieces, please let me know!

Much love, thanks.

How to teach timing/rhythm?

I’ve been noticing most of my students (that I inherited from a teacher who left the studio I joined) have trouble playing to a consistent rhythm. There are younger students who are reading from the first Hal Leonard Student Piano Library book that don’t really grasp that a half note is the same length as 2 quarter notes and when I try to explain it in those terms it doesn’t seem to register well.

Additionally, more advanced students tend to play faster than they should, and end up dragging in sections that they don’t remember as well or rushing substantially in sections that they know better.

Any advice on how to explain to students what rhythm means and how to play in time is greatly appreciated!

Much love, thanks.

How to explain finger numberings to a young kid?

Teaching a 6 year old boy who is very nice but may have some attention issues that his parents don’t really address. He gets distracted very often and I’ve been trying to explain how 2 3 4 means different things in the left hand and the right hand, but he hasn’t seemed to grasp it yet. Are there any exercises or games I can use to get him to associate the right numbers with the right fingers on both hands?

Losing my mind over first set of lessons

Howdy, I’m a 20 year old piano performance student who is just entering his first real year of piano performance and I applied for a job teaching piano lessons at a studio that caters to all kinds of genres and styles, mainly classical and pop.

I am mainly a jazz pianist with great knowledge of theory, improvisation, and ear training, but a not so great knowledge of reading and classical music. I’ve been building these skills for a bit now and made some improvements, but my sight reading is poor unless it’s a lead sheet.

I took classical lessons for some time but honestly I didn’t practice what I was supposed to and honestly I struggle to remember a lot of how they were structured. This is making me incredibly worried about having to teach classical repertoire but I’m worried that I might be stuck in this situation. I was upfront about having challenges with reading in my interview but still got the job.

Part of the reason I don’t want to give up is because these are skills that I need to know and this could work as motivation to get them up to where they need to be, but the anxious part of my brain is flooding with impostor syndrome and telling me that I need to give up or quit or just stop coming in before I’ve even started.

Encouragement and advice is so greatly appreciated, especially anything involving building sight reading skills, how to structure lessons, and how to recommend practice. I love music more than anything in the world and the reason I want to teach lessons is that I want to see a world where more people have access to this art, it’s incredibly important to me.

Thank you and much love.

Adding personality/color to my outfits

Howdy everyone!

I’ve been getting into fashion for a couple months now and feel like I’ve made some great progress in improving my sense of style and my wardrobe. I’ve got a watch and necklace that I wear regularly, some jackets and overshirts, button downs, tshirts, and will probably be buying some new pants in the near future. For reference, I used to almost exclusively wear tshirts and gym shorts, so this is a pretty revolutionary change for me.

I like my style now, but the one thing I’ve noticed is that it doesn’t feel like it has a lot of personality put into it. I wear a lot of classic combinations like a shirt and chinos with a jacket, or a polo and cargo shorts if it’s hot out, and they look good but also seem kind of plain to me.

How can I start adding some of my own personality to my outfits without having to overhaul anything again? Any thoughts on things like more accessories, patches, pins, graphics, or anything of the like is greatly appreciated!

Much love, thank you!

Was planning to go down to Houston from College Station, is that a bad idea?

I had no idea about Bertha until today, and I have no idea how bad it is or how to gauge it.

Alt rock songs from outside of the US, UK Australia, or Canada.

I’m taking a History of Rock class and need to write about some songs that come from countries we didn’t really cover in the course. Ideally some stuff that reflects the culture of the place it comes from, but at the end of the day I’m just excited to listen to some music that comes from somewhere else. Please leave your recs for me to check out!

Taking on students at a wide range of levels

I’m a 20 year old music performance student who just got a job teaching piano lessons at a studio with several teachers. The “jazz piano” guy they have is leaving and I’m primarily a jazz pianist so I’ve been asked to take his students once he goes. I’ve subbed in for him a couple times now but all his students are doing different things and at very different levels and I have no idea where to take some of them. I’m not super comfortable with teaching reading sheet music, so any advice related to that is super appreciated, but also how do I figure out how to teach at each level and honestly I don’t even know what else to ask. I’m just so stressed about this I want to do right by these kids and I’m worried that I’m going to be a terrible teacher. I want to teach music and I care so much about making music accessible for anyone so I feel like I need to put a lot of pressure on myself to do this right now

Need advice for styling this piece (also what do I even call it? Coat? Jacket? Overshirt?)

All I see on Pinterest are the same combo of coat, crewneck/turtleneck tee/sweater, and like chinos or trousers or jeans something. What else could I wear with this that’s maybe a bit more exciting? I’ve done a maroon linen button down, which I kind of liked, what else could match well with this? Would a tie be too much? I know it’s a workwear piece but I kind of like the blend of formalwear and workwear.

Yeah, my mirror’s dirty, I’ll get around to cleaning it someday I swear 😭😭😭
