I feel like starting the Dead Drops series with a big run was a wrong choice

They’re really going about this the wrong way if they’re trying to entice people on the fence to stay.

Your first weeks of drops are a big run of shows? Cool technically, but to launch the app?

Pull out some weird one off shows. Jump eras. 95 shows and a 65 show in the same week. Do cool weird little stuff like “two shows played during the World Series” or “Two shows with the same guest in different years”.

These Dead Drops are clearly the biggest draw to the app — make em more of a special thing. This feels like cleaning out the vault. “Oh this run of shows is decent and we’ve got good tapes but this will never be a box set so we’ll just drop it on the app.”

Feels like a big missed opportunity and a really weird choice to go with a big run to kick off these drops.

Is it weird for married couples to have bunk beds?

My spouse and I have queen sized bunk beds in our room. What are your thoughts on the matter? And are there any other couples out there who sleep on bunk beds in their home as fully grown adults?

What’s it like in Fairfield, IA?Small town of 10,000 kind of equidistant from Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Quincy…but also the worldwide HQ of the Transcendental Meditation Foundation and its college.

Anybody here ever just blast some Dead and wax their own butthole? You haven’t been to the real cosmos until you’ve heard “Live/Dead” with hot wax smeared like cream cheese over your sweetest parts. As my wife always says when I’m done with my self-care, “Feels Like A Stranger!”

For those of you asking why I am such a fan of Vince:

He sang Samba in The Rain as my mom had me in the upper deck of Three Rivers Stadium. I was three weeks early and came out before she really had any idea I was coming. Boom, right there in section 308.

My life began to Vince’s immortal words:

“Samba in the rain oh baby/Samba in the rain/Let's get down and dirty/Don't bother to explain/Don't care if they call a cop/and say we are insane/we'll keep goin' til we drop/Samba in the rain”

That’s why I’m a VinnieBoi and always will be. Don’t even try to pretend I’m not. I’m true blue. Biggest WelnickBoi in the land. When he played those keyboards, it was like a direct transmission from the father I never met. Sometimes I think maybe Vince was my father. That brings me comfort and hope. I’d forgive my mother if I found out that I was the result of a little Samba in The Rain.

I named my son after Vince’s first band, The Tubes. His name is Tubeill. I did this in tribute to the man who met my borning cry with his soulful croon.

The Dead.net show archive section is an amazing collection of what amounts to modern anthropology. Some shows have 100s of comments that build a shared history of the band.

There’s something about reading “I met a friend of 50+ years at this show!” Or “This was the first show I got my dad to come to and he left understanding why this band is so important to me!” Or “It rained all day and we played in the mud in the lawn!” that really enhances my enjoyment of exploring shows.

I’d love if when I pulled up a show on the app, it displayed the show notes that Heads have spent decades building on dead.net.

Never really noticed it before but was reading back through a bunch of old Relix Bobby articles these past few days:

At some point in the ‘90-00s, Bobby started going by Bobby both personally and professionally, can anybody put a finger on about when? Anybody know why?

It’s not the craziest thing in the world, but it’s pretty rare for someone to alter their name professionally, it’d be kind of like if Billy Joel started going by Bill Joel.

Yeah, I know about “Bobby and The Midnights” but there it seemed almost like a send up/joke with the band name.

I also know Jerry has called him Bobby in interviews and I get behind closed doors he was probably called Bobby as much as Bob.

Yes, I know you used to yell BOBBY from the crowd at shows in the 1990s

….but in public, as a performer it was always “Here’s Bob Weir” and at some point it became “Bobby Weir.” His last decade of solo tours were always billed as Bobby: Bobby Weir and the Campfire Band, Bobby Weir and the Wolf Brothers, Bobby Weir and Orchestra, Phil & Bobby tour etc etc

Just another fascinating wrinkle in the life of Ol’ Ace.

Feels like we should start discussing these week to week, huh? Kind of a fun way to stay involved.

My favorite year is ‘76 — has the 73-76 songs in place but still leaning towards cosmic cowboy than towards smooth disco dead — so when I saw a ‘76 show I was hyped…but I think the ‘95(!) show might be the better of the two.

I wasn’t at this one, but this had to be one of the better shows of the tour. “Unbroken” into “H/S/F” to start set two? Even the “Corinna” is a barn burner.

The sound quality is ridiculously great. Most ‘90s stuff, I usually prefer AUDs but the remastering on these is top notch.

Does anyone know if “we” knew these two shows were in the vault?

How are you guys feeling about this week’s “new” shows?

Yes, I know the Dead were one of a kind!

I’m curious about unknown other bands kind of mining the same improvisational/Americana blend as the Dead?

Bands that really stretched out in concert that I may have not heard before.

Bands like the Allman Brothers/NRPS I’m very familiar with — I’m looking for bands I may not have heard of before that were around in 1960s/70s doing the hazy/exploratory Dead thing.

Smaller local bands very much encouraged.

Here’s the vibe I’m looking for:

Mountain Bus - 1971 - Chicago — a great, very Dead-influenced band
