Opposite words

Hi - I'm new here. My 4x PhD and many times published literacy professor told me in grad school (in my 30s) that I was dyslexic. I've never otherwise been diagnosed and not sure at this point that it's worth it.

I've always been an excellent speller and avid reader, although I'm a very slow reader and often have to reread passages.

One of my most prominent "symptoms" is that I sometimes say the opposite word of what I mean. This is exacerbated when I'm fighting a migraine, which I have been today. For ex. I might say cold instead of hot, East instead of West, etc. I know the right word and concept pair but what comes out of my mouth is something else.

Sometimes even when I'm singing to a song I know the lyrics to, I might say a word in the same family that rhymes or starts with the same letters as the correct word.

This has been going on for decades.

Are these part of my supposed dyslexia?

Is there a way to correct this? It doesn't bother me, but if it happens around someone who doesn't know this about me, it can make me look kinda dumb when I'm not.

Anniversary Gift

Every year I struggle to get gifts for my spouse. We mostly buy what we want when we want it (blessed 🙏🏻) and while they do have interests and hobbies, the last thing we need is more stuff. As far as experiences, I have mobility issues so that's tough.

They like music, weightlifting (we have all the weights and equipment and then some), being outside, animals and nature, 80s and 90s retro, and a little bit car culture, astronomy (no room for telescope but has a mono scope), cameras/photography. They don't drink or smoke or play/watch sports.

Thx for any help!

I don't recognize myself

I literally don't recognize myself now that my hair is growing back and it's extra curly and VERY gray. It doesn't look bad. - everyone tells me how good it looks, even people who don't know I had cancer compliment my hair - but I hate it. I hate that I'm not entitled to a single day without being reminded that I had cancer because mirrors exist.

I've said hello to my own reflection out in the wild - TWICE - because I didn't recognize my reflection as myself. The dysmorphia and identity crisis are so fucking real.

Please tell me it gets better.

(IDC++- grade 2, stage 1a. 1year 9 months since diagnosis, 15 months since chemo, have had hysterectomy and on AI.)

Zometa refusal?

Hi friends,

I started on my AI last year with slight osteopenia. One oncologist said to add a calcium supplement, the other wants me to start Zometa.

I have been in the less-than-1% of rare and serious side effects more than once, so the osteonecrosis of the jaw scares the shit out of me. I have a friend who's a dentist who has seen it happen and told me I do not want that.

I already have some pre-existing jaw issues that increase my risk of this side effect.

Of course I want to reduce the risk of bone mets, and I want to help improve or at least slow/stall the progression of the osteopenia, but ONJ truly terrifies me.

This is not helped by getting news that someone I used to work with is now Stage 4 after two cancer-free decades as it has spread to her bones. She is getting a similar med now.

My oncologist said 90% of patients have no serious issues taking it. 10% seems like a decent risk zone for someone like me.

I see my dentist soon and anticipate not getting clearance, but wondering if anyone has opted not to get this injection, or has not gotten clearance, and how that worked out and what you did instead?

Fuuuuuuuuck cancer

ETA: IDC ++- Grade 2, Stage 1a, ki67<5, no lymph spread. Treatment: lumpectomy + bilateral oncologist reduction, 4x TC chemo, 30x radiation, started on Tamoxifen, currently on Letrozole.

Beginner Blanket

Hi there! I acquired two skeins of this yarn (the giant balls of Bernat Baby Blanket yarn) in a slightly different colorway.

Is there a beginner friendly baby blanket that would use two of these yarn balls and wouldn't have holes that baby fingers could get stuck in?

I've made one blanket before and it turned out well. I can do most basic stitches (single, double, triple, slip, etc.) and am a pretty fast learner.

Thanks in advance!

Used Herbin Ink again (Tabac)

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/s/GMwIGOlq66

I have not been able to find online what this ink should look like so I'm still not sure if what was in the bottle was Tabac or something else.

Attached is the bottle I bought and a sample swatched in a Noble Note pad using a pointy q-tip.

My questions are:

 1. Do you think the ink in the bottle is Tabac or something else? It just smells like ink but I know the scent in scented ink doesn't last forever.

 2. There isn't any sediment, visible mold, and it doesn't smell off. It behaves like fp ink. Even if it's not Tabac, it's a very nice color and there's not a lot of it in there. Would it be safe to use in a pen? Or should I just stick with a dip pen and not risk it inside a pen?

CBD/THC recs

For chemo induced neuropathy, I've read that a 1:1 ratio is best. I live in a legal state in the USA and wondering if anyone has had better luck with topical vs tincture vs gummies and if there's a specific strain or product that works well for you?

HA first timer - Resound Brand?

Hi! I'm about to get my new hearing aids. I read all the pinned posts which were super helpful!

I also searched the sub for Resound and saw a little bit but not a lot.

Wondering if anyone can share their experiences with this brand? The audiologist said it's a patient favorite because of the small size. Thanks for any feedback!

I'm actually excited 😊

Assistive Devices?

Hi hi, I have CIPL (just learned from another post the other day that there's a name for this) and my neuropathy is primarily in my toes and front half of both feet.

I really like getting out and doing things, but the pain and fatigue have really impacted my stamina for standing and walking and I need to that frequent rest breaks, which isn't always convenient (woods, museums, etc).

Are there any devices that people have found helpful to balance being able to enjoy life while being able to take breaks and rest your feet?

Talented Hairdresser

Hi friends, I have post chemo hair that's growing back and getting wild and unruly. I'd like to maybe go with a low key stylish fauxhawk or even slightly cute mullet but am struggling to find someone who can help.

I watched to try Halie the vegan hairstylist but she's not taking new clients right now.

Who would be my next go to?

Should I visit?

Sorry this is long.

My mom was never physically abusive, but I've always been her scapegoat. I'm in my 50s now and she still holds things against me from when I was a young teen and behaved like most young teens. She often mocked me as a child. She hated that I loved Wonder Woman and called her homely. When I was in physical pain, I was gaslit or dismissed and expected to suck it up. She had her moments of being okay, but mostly I always felt like a disappointment and nuisance around her. My parents weren't around a lot (1970s and 80s, enough said). When they split it was just me and my mom and she was not ok and I was basically her parent, like literally rocking her in my arms while she sobbed. I latched on to a couple who was so kind to me and I'd never really felt that kind of maternal love and acceptance before, and my mom read my diary, invited them to dinner without telling me, and I never heard from them again. She often asked me to literally mediate her arguments with her boyfriend, and being the people pleaser that I was I did it. Repeatedly.

She was helping with my young daughter while I was finishing grad school and I found out she was being incredibly cruel to her, which is really what opened my eyes to who she really is. She's mean-spirited and takes visible joy when she says or does something to hurt or trigger the people around her.

There are also more basic barriers to having a relationship with her, like we do not have the same sense of humor, we do not see eye to eye on just about anything, so finding common ground with her is difficult.

I try really, really hard to give her grace because she has been through some shit. She was punished as a child for reading, was told women don't need to know how to read, they just need to know their way around a kitchen, and denied the opportunity to go to college by her father despite having a scholarship. My father was a serial cheater and borderline pathological liar.

She's struggled with drinking problems my whole life. She's never been the maternal type and had she grown up in a different era, she would have gone to college and maybe never married or had kids.

We don't really talk much. Maybe once or twice a year on the phone and otherwise we just text here and there. This is largely because she would get drunk and go on really absurd political rants, and I had to set a boundary and enforce it. She stopped calling me for my birthday although she'll still send a card and a check.

She's almost 80yo and moved out of state last year (is now near my oldest brother) and I haven't been to visit. This happened while I was in cancer treatment, but now I'm in a more stable place and thinking a lot about things.

I wonder if I've been too hard on her. I wonder if she's changed even a little.

Her texts are more affectionate than ever. She tells me how much she misses and loves me and sends all the sweet emojis.

And I wonder if I should make the effort to go visit. Part of me feels like a really bad daughter for not visiting, but I've had severe panic attacks driving to her house in the past and the thought of spending time with her just really tweaks my anxiety even though it's sometimes fine.

Help a girl out please 🌺

Phonak Infinio vs Lumity

Hi all! I've been presented with a choice between Phonak Infinio at around $6K or Lumity for about half that. I've done some googling and leaning towards the Lumity if nothing else to save some money with my entry into this part of life. Wondering if there are any super compelling reasons to go with the Infinio instead?

I don't have Costco near me :(

Nice version of PaperMate Flair?

I'm not suggesting the Flair isn't a very nice pen - we love them. I would love to gift my partner a non-disposable version but am not able to find anything like that.

Anyone know of maybe a metal-bodied Flair or something just like it that is refillable?

Good baby blanket for beginner?

I've already crocheted one blanket which was mostly a lot of double crochet and had a built in border. I did a pretty good job of it.

I would like to make another but don't want to get too complex and wondered if a corner to corner would fit the bill?

I also really like the Tunisian ones but unsure of how complex it is. I'm a fast learner.

Mostly I want a blanket that is not very "hole"y because I want it to be safe for baby fingers.

Thank you!
