NSM is so bad and unreliable

Anyone else now getting this on NSM in Firefox only. Chrome works fine. You'll get into Sonicwall, click on the NSM icon and then it just gets stuck on this. Cleared cookies, cleared all sonicwall cache. Do it in a private browser window, still does it. Gone on another, totally different machine, does the same.

Also the captcha coming up pretty much any time you try to login and the "I sign in frequently" being totally ignored.

Scott Mueller upgrading and repairing PCs

This is sort of a question really, does anyone know what ever happened to Scott Mueller? I've been looking on and off and today came across this.

https://www.echovita.com/us/obituaries/fl/pompano-beach/scott-mueller-13747478

But it doesn't appear legit. Surely if that was the family that have more photos than the one off of his books.

Loved his books in the late 90s and early 00s when I discovered them. Would sit and watch all the included videos. Been trying to get a collection going, but would want the DVDs as well.

One time I had an IDE drive that, while in Windows and doing stuff, if the speakers were on you could hear noise coming out of them. Couldn't work out what it was, was still in the process of studying computers. Happen to have watched his vids at the time and took a punt and e-mailed him asking for advice. He actually replied. He told me about the new 80 pin IDE cables and that I probably had 40 pins. That when the drive was being accessed, noise leaked and was coming out the speakers. He was right, replaced them with 80 pin cables and the issue went away, because the extra pins cancelled out the noise.

Had same with Mark Russinovich before he became CTO of Azure. Watching his Case of the Unexplained vids (had been trying to collect all the editions of process explorer and process monitor) and had an issue with an e-mail and an image in it, just like one of his examples. I e-mailed him and he actually replied. He gave advice, pointed to me how Outlook used and got its images from e-mails and he found in the trace I gave him the issue causing it. It was the way PayPal were references their images.

So, anyone got any good leads of what happened to Scott after issue 22? And has he, sadly, died young?

EDIT- Spelling and corrections.

5 year contract BT Business

We have a manager who doesn't do tech. BT called him about the expiring PSTN line. Instead of asking someone they convinced him he needed to migrate to a digital line (which is correct) but that the contract would be for 60months!!!!!

He's agree and I can't see a way out of that now without paying them the full wack. The only possible get out is their cock up. In the contract they state the correct line they will port but instead they started to port an old number that was never mentioned and we no longer what. They are attempting to fix that but taking their time. Which in turn appears to delay being able to cancel.

Reported Missing

Watching Reported Missing on iplayer and find it odd, the way the police appear to be setup. Granted, all job areas are different but as an IT engineer, I get given tasks and follow them through to conclusion. If I need advice with something I'll ask but then still finish off myself.

Someone in neighborhood/housing officer who has to deal with residents the same. Once trained up they deal with residents and mostly deal with them themselves, making decisions etc.

But watching this, they send out the front line police to investigate, get CCTV footage, talk to witnesses etc. Who then come back, appear to have to tell their manager/supervisor who then decides what to do next. As if the front line police can't be trusted to make their own decisions on how to proceed next. And then of course the ones that chat to the camera are the managers as if the others did nothing, when we can see the front line appear to do a lot of the grunt work.

Restart a service on a server with no one logged in

Before I start work on this simple script, just checking it is possible to create a script on a server, that runs when no one is logged in, that monitors 3 services. If it sees them stop, it restarts them? The option on the services to restart them when they fail doesn't actually appear to restart them. So you end up having to do it manually. That could mean there is a wider issue at the time maybe, not sure.

Mechanical combo lock not locking

EDIT - Update - Resolved. For some reason this lock opens turning to the left. The other one we have, on another door opens to the right. All vids show them opening to the right, so no idea why this one opens to the left. Didn't notice until I put it back on the door to test. I asked someone who didn't know about this issue but used the lock regularly to see what they instinctively did when turning the handle, which confirmed, it oddly turns to the left.

We have one of those mechanical push button combo door locks for the server room door. Too many people know the code so I'm chaning it. However, having followed guides, including holding down C while pulling the pins. The lock now appears to just be permanently open without the need for a code.

What have I done wrong? I've read horror stories that if you don't hold C all the time you're changing the code, it ruins the lock. I don't know how that could be and those are anecdotal stories. I've seen a couple of vids with people not holding C and it being fine. Holding C does make pulling the pins easier.

How do you control this?

So this is at the end of our long Victorian garden. Don't get out in it often as its just not private enough. But every year I try and flatten this end out ready to do something with it, but every year it ends up like this. I'm thinking only option would be to replace the soil but due to neighbour issues and access thats not gonna happen.

FireAngel Placement

Maybe not the right place to ask but will anyway. I find fireangel smoke alarms fine. Moved into our Victorian home 8 years ago and there was a smoke alarm just outside the open door kitchen (has no door).

Fine but it was old so I decided to replace it eventually. FA was fine for a while then randomly would go off in night. Must be dust. So I cleaned it off. Then did it again another night. And another night. Got sick of it and yanked the batteries. Upstairs one doesn't do this.

Eventually I replaced it. Eventually new one did same fucking thing. Partner then didn't trust them. I pointed out its only the one by the fucking kitchen that does it, they are fine. But why. The replacement has had its batteries ripped out again and now dumped on a table for months.

Its horrible when it goes off as it obviously hurts our dog as he cries cause it won't shut up till I wake.

So curious to know what could be the issue. Its clearly not cooking as its doing it at night.

And is it better to place it in the centre of the open planned front and back room instead of near the kitchen?

Curious about 403 Forbidden

So have an account with CBTNuggets and I can see the .ts files when I play a vid. I then find the .m3u8 playlist. I give this to yt-dlp along with the cookies from browser firefox. But it always comes back with a 403 Forbidden message.

Yet, within firefox, when you play the video, Video DownloadHelper sees it just fine and lets you download it in mp4 format.

Curious to know why yt-dlp would get a rejection despite having the cookies, yet Video DownloadHelper doesn't get rejected.

Papercut and Civica

So we have a bespoke management system that is supported offsite by Civica. They run and manage the database. On our side, we have Papercut via Ricoh. I followed Civica's guide for setting up the service on the Papercut server so that when a print job comes from Civica's server, via the browser (the app is browser based). The job lands on the papercut server, runs through the Civica service that is running (if that isn't running the prints don't come out), then prints straight out.

That is fine. If I look at the PRN file that is created, I assume from the Civica app, I can see the username in that file. So I know who printed what.

However, in papercut we also have the virtual print queues setup for follow me printing. I've added this print queue to the Civica app so that people can print and it won't come out until they release. However, the jobs aren't appearing on their papercut queue. I then signed in as admin on the Ricoh printer and there they are, all waiting to be released. So they must be coming over as SYSTEM.

So I did a process monitor trace to see what was going on as I can't find the PRN file for the jobs sent to the follow me queue. In this whole Civica setup, you have to go in their config file to tell it what part of PRN file to look at, to get the user name. So with the trace I spotted the PRN file for the follow me queue, but it gets deleted once finished with. But before that it sends the job to the spooler with a SPL file. And in that SPL file, the user is SYSTEM.

I've been arguing with Civica over and over, that print jobs to that queue, they are clearly sending the jobs over as SYSTEM. But they deny it and claim its a papercut issue.

At a lose where to go. I can't stand Civica.

Sandown And 1980s Browns

May have asked this before. Anyone got any old photos or videos of Browns arcade and cafe from the 80s. Looking at the boating lake it was on the left hand side. We'd visit every year for 2 weeks from London for our summer holiday as kids.

Despite having old photos of Blackgang etc. We never got one around Browns. Was my fav arcade.

I'm not on Facebook so can't ask or look there.

Saving a archive.org site

Is there a way to backup archive.org sites that it's archive? I'm on the hunt, as I'm odd, trying to find out where the old Tempo Megastore was in the UK, the electronics and whitegoods outlet that went into admin in 2001.

I have a list of their stores from 1998, the year I'm looking at, but can't find the specific store.

It appeared on a BBC episode of The Learning Zone.

https://youtu.be/IpLew7igK-w?si=nuzxYIDSDlfE-Zx3

Sadly, archive.org doesn't appear to have grabbed any of the images but luckily an archive was taken end of 1998, so I've been looking at all those old locations. Trying to match the current buildings to the old footage, even looking at for the old estate that appears opposite.

Then got me thinking can you download an archive that archive.org has grabbed?

The Learning Zone: Computers Don't Bite: Getting Started at Home

Despite paying a TV license, its annoying when the BBC don't make old stuff like this available. Their archive YouTube channel gives you one episode and that's it. Annoying.

Assume no one has any of these?

fluorescent paint in Mexico?

Currently visiting Mexico from England, leave tomorrow. Staying at a resort that has hand crafted art day. Walking around the stalls they keep showing off the models etc they have apparently hand crafted and painted (although most look mass produced) that they have fluorescent paint and glow under UV light.

Is this a Mexican thing? For us it makes them seem like they aren't handcrafted and are just mass produced for tourists.

Training

We started using intune a few years back now but, to this day, still have never been given training. Have had to learn bits as I go.

Can you still create dummy tenants so I can set this up from scratch for learning without having to pay a monthly sub?

Mega CD Model 1 Fuse

Got one years ago, finally. Didn't play it much do it got put back in its box. Now no longer working and I believe its just the fuse. Spoke to guy at work years ago who collected all things Sega and he said the issue with the model 1 is you normally have to get the special fuse kits. Is that accurate?

I've opened it up and all the caps look good so I think its just the fuse.

[TOMT] Rachel Weisz lookalike

I can't explain in the title. There is an older British actress who looks quite abit like Rachel Weisz. And for years I swore she must be her mum but isn't.

I now can't remember who this is. Also, annoyingly, as then I'd be able to find her, I can't remember what movies she's been in.

Have come across the archive of Terry Davis' video. Never heard of him so looked him up. Being in the IT field its interesting and noticed the Absolute Terry Davis channel on YouTube points to all his stuff on archive.org but the torrents are from 2018 and appear dead.

Does anyone have this archive?

Anyone else getting this? (annoyingly images aren't allowed) Had this for weeks now. Sign into NSM and tells us we should be using the Unified Management console now. I started using it, all seems fine (at least that remembers the MFA settings unlike NSM), then suddenly a day later after having used it for weeks, it stopped working.

Support is useless. Had to fight their AI chat bot to get to a person who thought it was related to the NSM outage but its not. He's said will have to wait 24hrs for their backend support to look at it.

I've cleared cache and even tried private browsing but nothing. Saw someone had same issue on here a while ago where half their engineers got this error but some were able to get in.
