Very annoying when this happens (New York ->Boston)

I booked an acela direct train from New York to Boston (Sept 13) and was just informed that my itinerary may have to change due to construction work on the tracks. I may need to change in New Haven. Can anyone please tell me if it's gonna be a hassle?

I just booked this ticket last week and I can't believe they were selling tickets on that date when they knew about the construction work. If I had known this I'd have just booked a coach to Boston instead. Now the price for the coach may have jumped.

Now I don't even know how long it takes for them to finalise my itinerary. Can anyone share their experience if they go through the same thing? If I choose a refund I am going to lose some money in currency conversion. Can I ask for a compensation voucher in this matter?

Your help is deeply appreciated.

Will I go through a lot of hassle if I bring chocolate, granola and honey from EU to Canada (and USA too)?

I'd like to bring some special chocoalates for my friends, and some personal favorite groceries with me too. Do I have to declare all these items, and if I do, will I have to go through a lot of hassle at the customs (like following a much longer queue or being interrogated)? If that's the case I'd rather bring nothing with me.

Many thanks in advance

I hit a grand slam as a sitter

I started applying for sits two months ago for a long trip to North America. One by one, the stars have aligned over weeks. I managed to secure four sits almost back to back.

This is no easy feat for me because i got turned down CONSTANTLY even though I have 40+ five-star reviews. Did more video calls than I could remember. At one time I had over 10 sit applications pending. Many times I almost gave up. I thought it was never gonna happen.

But it finally did. I am not a digital nomad. I don't work from home. I just travel for pleasure. I sit cats only. So I usually just do one sit at a time. Doing multiple sits at a time is something very new to me. I hope I can pull it off!

If you have any tips and advice, please feel free to share it. I'd deeply appreciate it.

Booked a transatlantic flight with BA for 470 euros with a short layover in London

I was pretty surprised when I found this fare with British Airways because I didn't think this kind of pre-COVID prices still existed.

My itinerary is:

Aug 31 (Mon) : Brussels --> NYC via London Heathrow

Oct 5 (Mon): Toronto --> Amsteram via London Heathrow

I booked it on Aug 2. The last time I checked, the same flights now cost 675 euro.

When I booked, I found that flights departing from Brussels to many American cities and returning to Amsterdam were cheap. But not vice versa.

The key words here are multi-city and flexible with your dates. Anyone with similar experiences/strategies to share?

What are the cheapest transatlantic flights you can find recently?

Torn between port authority or jamaica station for flixbus

I am going to Boston on a Sunday morning in September. I will stay in a place a 15 min's walk from Nostrand Avenue station.

I lean towards taking the flixbus in Jamaica because it is 30 min shorter. But I am not familiar with the service between Nostrand Av and Jamaica on a Sunday morning. Is it prone to delays and cancelation? Especially when weather can be unpredictable these days?

If LIRR doesn't work, then Jamaica station is far to reach. At least 1 hour if I take the subway while port authority is reachable by subway C train in 35 min.

Which flixbus location would you choose?

Many thanks in advance.

I wanted to cancel a two-night reservation, host modified my booking to one night 6 months later to reduce cancellation fees for him

He said after I accept the change, I can cancel the reservation myself. This way he claimed he could minimize the cancellation fees imposed on him.

In the email about the modified reservation, the stated refund amount is more than the deposit I paid (half the cost of the original booking). It looks weird. So will I be able to get a full refund in this scenario?

Is all this legitimate?

Your help is deeply appreciated.

Is flixbus reliable from Boston to Worcester Union Station?

I plan to take the flixbus on a Friday morning in September to catch the bus No.2 at the Union Station to the Worcester airport. I also checked the train but it takes 1 hr 45 minutes while flixbus takes less than an hour. Does anyone know if flixbus is reliable and on time? Should I be concerned about traffic at that time of day?

Your help is deeply appreciated.

Is this article still right about free seat selection for Basic passengers?

"As I mentioned earlier, at check in, which occurs 24 hours before your flight, you are allowed to select any remaining seats for free." (Jan, 2026)

This is what most airlines used to offer for all kinds of passengers. Now most of them don't even let you choose a seat for free 24 hours before the flight.

Does Delta still offer this?

Many thanks in advance

Free seat selection for Economy Light passengers during/after 24-hour check in?

I know the official answer is no, but I remember once with finnair, my attempts to change seats for free was rejected at first, and then when I tried a few hours later, I got assigned the seat I wanted (Not sure if this was a system glitch or not).

Or I usually ask the agent at the check-in counter in person to change the seat for free, with limited success.

Has anyone tried any of the above with KLM?

Or KLM has a strict NO policy for Light passengers?

I'd deeply appreciate your help.

Anyone flying regularly from London to Chicago?

I see their flights are much cheaper than its competitors in September. But I just looked up the flight records of BA299 and they had four cancellations and one diversion in the past two weeks (counting from Jul 17) ! Shame that I couldn't look up more records unless I subscribe to the service.

So are these cancellations a seasonal thing (weather being too hot?), or are they common on this route? Looks like if I value punctuality, I should avoid flying with BA?

And also I wonder what BA usually does in these cancellations? Do they announce them a few days ahead and rebook you on another (partner airline) flight, or just inform you at the airport on the date of departure, leaving you stranded? Big difference there!

I'd deeply appreciate your help.

Schiphol question: is it safe to just take the "recommended" timeslot?

I haven't used this feature before. I see that I can choose timeslots earlier than the "recommended" timeslot, I wonder if it's neccessary?

I will take two international flights on separate occasions, one without check-in (coz I only bring a backpack), and another one with cabin luggage, but I imagine I may need to check in at the counter because my travel documents may need to be checked.

I have to finish the check-in before going to the security checkpoint.

So my question is, when should I arrive at Schiphol if my booked security timespot is 10am, for example?

Your help is deeply appreciated.

Any good reason why we can't block or delete users/listings/messages on this platform?

I would like to do all of the above to be more organised and efficient as a sitter. But I am not allowed to. Any good reason WHY?

Just curious, is it 1:1 ratio if I register ANA miles at Miles & More?

Or it will be discounted?

I have 8000+ ANA miles so I would like to know how many miles I would get if I register them at Miles & More. Many thanks in advance

The cats may have fleas. Any takers?

I appreciate the HO's honesty, but it's funny how casually she mentioned it. Who in their right mind would apply for this sit? And guess what? The reviews are glowing as usual 🤣 BTW is it safe to sit outdoor cats in general?

u/sunnynihilist — 27 days ago

Been declined by a HO without a message again. Usually I let it go, but this time I feel like messaging them back

What would you say if you'd like to ask them to be more polite and civilised on this platform? Maybe it's a sign that they don't want to hear from you ever again? My theory is if they would like me as a sitter in the future they wouldn't have been rude. I am a bit shocked this time because the HOs are highly educated people.

Still I think it's basic decency to decline with a message and thank the sitter for applying. I took time to write a personalised message to you. At least you should reply, even with a copy-and-paste answer. Please help me draft a nice and concise message... Thank you in advance

Dear Belgians, what would make you catch flights from Schiphol instead of Zaventem?

I found some direct international flights that are 200 euros cheaper if I fly from Schiphol, but I wonder if the extra time, cost and effort is worth it. Needless to say we have heard how chaotic things can get at Schiphol airport.

What bugs me about flying from Schiphol is that when I return home, I can't buy a train ticket in advance because I am not sure if my flight will be delayed and how long it will take for me to clear the customs. If I choose to buy the train ticket after arrival it's gonna be 50+ euros, and it offsets the money I saved from the flights.

Any thoughts? Has anyone flown from this airport recently?

Should I visit Milan for food in August

I am asking because I heard many shops and restaurants are closed in August. I am planning to visit from Aug 5-11. I checked the websites of some restaurants, but I haven't seen announcements that they would close in August.

I am not into fancy dining, I just wanna eat some tasty pasta and gelato.

I just don't wanna be disappointed. I'd deeply appreciate yoir help.

I was about to accept two sits, but then one sit I really wanted replied out out of the blue and seemed to accept me. Now I am juggling three sits that I really want to do but I can only do one. What do you say to the other two without antagonizing them? I really want to sit for them in the future but the timing is just not right. I feel bad about rejecting people, because I know it sucks to be rejected...
