Is there a way to bypass Android system mixer and use exclusive USB DAC mode on Spotify?

I just got the FiiO KA11 USB C dongle for my Xiaomi phone and realized that Spotify doesn't bypass the Android mixer. Is there a way to do that, and if not, why the hell not lmao?

With the introduction of lossless audio and increasing number of people using USB-C external DAC's (mostly because of the eradication of the 3.5mm jack) it's literally a no brainer. Is it a hard implementation for the team or do they just not care?

Having the phone volume at 100% with a DAC dongle sounds horrible.

I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 and I'm using the FiiO dongle. At first I thought the dongle would bypass the phone's volume control, but it didn't. So, I searched on the internet and have seen people advising to keep the digital volume maxed out and adjusting the volume on the FiiO app.

However, that just sounds horrible. It seems like maxing out the volume on this phone distorts the sound. It sounds like the bass is kinda tearing, and the higher frequency details are lost. It gets better once I lower the phone volume 2-3 steps down. It stops sounding congested and the sub-bass and air come back.

I'm just kinda annoyed because it doesn't seem like an ideal solution. Like, I'm not sure at what point I'm distorting the signal and at what point I'm losing digital data by turning down the phone's volume. Does this combo even provide a "normal" sound, considering it doesn't bypass the phone's volume, as I believe it should. Is there a way to bypass it? Is anyone else listening to headphones like that. Does anyone have any advice, should I just keep the phone's volume at 80-90% and call it a day?

Does anyone else find Crash Bandicoot games to be endlessly replayable? (Crash 1-3 and CTR)

I swear I never get tired of them. In the last three months I've completed each save file in every game and each playthrough was more fun that the last one. Especially Crash 2 and 3. You can put a controller in my hand with those two games on at any point in my life and I'll have a blast. (Except for the two airplane missions, those are bland and boring sorry.)

I guess they're just very casual and comfort games. I have similar feelings about other platformers like Sly, Spyro, Jak, Ratchet and so on... but Crash is the most replayable and I've never really experienced Crash fatigue as much as Spyro for example.

What is "Blit Swap Chain" and why does it work wonderfully on my potato?

Hello! A noob here.

I love DuckStation, but for over a month I had three problems: tearing, input lag, judder (or microstutters, I believe). I was constantly trying to get the best compromise with those three. Tearing disappears with Vsync, and I don't mind the added input lag, but the microstutters every 10 seconds were very annoying. I was playing with display options, too. In exclusive fullscreen input lag was even larger for some reason than borderless. I could check Sync to Host Refresh Rate but the latency with that + Vsync is veeeery noticeable to me.

I might add that I have a 60Hz, non-VRR laptop. Basically a lower tier notebook, so of course I'm not expecting some magic.

Now. I was messing around with some display options and checked the "Use Blit Swap Chain" and played for 20 minutes and I was shocked to see how amazingly it played. With Vsync turned off, the frame pacing is smooth and zero tearing and input lag is not noticeable if there even is any. Also, no microstutters that I'm aware of. I don't understand how that's possible? Also I haven't noticed the "slower performance" that is mentioned in the explanation box.

So the point of this post is... Can anyone explain what that actually is and if it's okay to have it checked if it works for me?

Can't get Vulkan to work consistently

Hello,

I'm playing some PS1 games on my (not so good) HP laptop. Tekken, Spyro, Croc, Crash, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawk, Final Fantasy, Ape Escape and so on... I'm having trouble with settings. It seems that whatever I do, there is always a glaring compromise.

With the D3D11 renderer, it runs the games consistently. It's very rare to experience any FPS drops that don't feel like they're the part of the game. However, the frame pacing is kinda off to me. It feels a bit choppy and not so smooth. Vulkan, on the other hand, feels much smoother in that regard. Runs like butter and just feels better to play overall. However, the problem with Vulkan is that occasionally there will be some FPS drops, always around the same area (mostly when there is an explosion or where it needs to load, for example in Crash 2, when you enter a level in the warp room) and it will last a second or two. It's very distracting and annoying. I don't know how to get rid of it and is it normal? Does anyone have a deeper knowledge on the differences between Vulkan and D3D11? And does anyone have any advice?

If you're interested in other settings I have, please let me know?

I think Diggin' It and Bee-Having are a bit underappreciated.

I love the aesthetic of these levels, snowy but in a more laid back, cozy way. The color palette is fantastic, the red spitter plants, yellow bees and bee hives, the lumberjacks and the magenta floor where he can dig into. It all comes together extremely well and again, cozy. The objects and enemies really pop out more than in the other levels.

And that's another thing - digging mechanic! I love the implementation and the great iconic animations like entering, spinning the enemies and exiting. It's also something bandicoots actually do! How often is there a mechanic in the games that actually makes sense for Crash? Not that it matters much, it's just cool when it happens. It's also kinda unique as it's only a feature in two of the levels in the whole trilogy. So it feels that more special.

Also, they are a bit challenging without being a pain. I for one don't mind the backtracking at all. Sure the camera could've used a bit of tweaking but eh. I love how they used the combination of plants, bees and lumberjack with electrical fences for you to figure out a tactic how to get past it.

I always thought these were fantastic and honestly was perplexed when I realized a lot of fans don't actually rate them highly at all. A lot of the times I see them at the bottom of the list, which is crazy to me! Personally, I adore these levels, looking at them, playing them, it's so good. They feel really refreshing.

(Also, speaking about underappreciated levels that are regularly ranked low, the jet pack levels are awesome, I don't care!)

Jack White solo work comparable to The White Stripes?

I think we're at the point where Jack's solo output should be taken more seriously.

Whenever there's conversation about Jack White's music, and people regarding idk No Name or Blunderbuss as the best album of his career, there are multiple people being all like "Whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves" or "Having No Name over Elephant and De Stijl is insane" and now I'm like "Is it though?"

Especially after following and witnessing him releasing absolute bangers like Fear Of The Dawn, No Name and now Frozen Charlotte, which honestly just cemented my view of his solo output being absolutely on par with The White Stripes.

I don't know if this is a hot take, but I consider No Name, Blunderbuss, Boarding House Reach and Frozen Charlotte to be up there with his classic The White Stripes albums (De Stijl, White Blood Cells and Elephant). And I'm of the opinion that No Name is his 2nd best album of all time after Elephant. Yes, even better than White Blood Cells (which is bloody fantastic and I think it's his 3rd best, don't get it twisted.) I don't find that ridiculous at all. I just find his solo catalog to be that strong.

I guess this is not a scorching hot take in this sub, but in the grander conversation, his solo albums are not given a fair share, I think.

I seriously cannot rank the original Spyro trilogy.

Does anyone else have a bit of a hard time deciding which of the games is their favorite and least favorite?

I swear it's like the only trilogy where I struggle with that and change my favorite all the time. All other franchises are more obvious to me.

At first I was more of a Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage fan. Then I was a Spyro: Year of the Dragon fan because it felt more grand and complete. Now I'm torn between all of them because I realized Spyro the Dragon has the most "liminal" atmosphere in the trilogy which is quite haunting, and I accepted that some parts of Year of the Dragon are the lowest lows of the series, like Agent 9 and Sgt. Byrd levels. I don't particularly enjoy them that much. Sheila and Bentley levels are actually fun imo. Even the boxing mission, while challenging, is kind of fun. The Spyro parts are amazing though, pretty much all of the levels. Then again, Spyro 2 also has peak Spyro moments and levels. However, I'm not sure how I feel about the weird progression with the story and unfocused talisman/orbs and homeworlds concepts. (someone made a post on that the other day here and I couldn't agree more that it's weird.)

All of that being said, I find them all to be equally good, and I can see all of them being someone's favorite. I literally get a headache trying to figure out which one I like the best.

Are these settings okay? (DuckStation + RTSS)

So I've been playing some PS1 games lately via DuckStation and I've had problems with some screen tearing.

The problem is I have a modest Intel 8th gen graphics card which doesn't support VRR and none of the DuckStation options helped so I downloaded RTSS because of the scanline sync feature (and FPS limiter). I started to experiment reading some forums and such with the numbers and I read somewhere that capping the FPS to 59.94 is ideal for NTSC games. So I did that and adjusted the scanline sync at -60.

So the settings are:

- VSync OFF

- Optimal Frame Pacing OFF

- Framerate limit 59.94

- Scanline sync -60

This setting runs the smoothest for me currently. Minimal tearing, no noticable lags, so on... Now, for more experienced people here, is there something wrong with this setting? Are there any downsides I'm not noticing? For example is there any input latency with the scanline sync (I know there is with VSync, but I haven't noticed with scanline)? Is doing any of this stuff (having RTSS running in the background) overheating the pc or something idk, I'm an ultra noob regarding this stuff.

My monitor refresh rate is 60 Hz, 1920×1080 resolution, btw. The games in question are Crash and Spyro trilogies.

Any tips and opinions would be of much help, thank you all.

Not an english speaker, so sorry if I said something incorrect.

Scanline Sync help (1920×1080)

I'm playing PS1 games on my peasant PC which doesn't have adaptive sync etc., with a 60Hz monitor and 1920×1080 resolution so I experienced quite a lot of screen tearing. I tried RTSS Scanline Sync inputing a random number like -60 and it is a LIFESAVER. Much less screen tearing, but I just wanted to ask if I'm doing it right? I've seen some people saying you should input the resolution - 60 (1080-60=1020) and some say you should just literally enter "-60" and now I'm kinda confused. Can someone explain it better? Should RTSS run in the background whenever DuckStation is on? I would be thankful if someone more experienced could give me some basic advice about the usage of this programe.

Also, are there any downsides to using scanline sync?I did not notice any input lag compared to VSync I believe and performance is smooth as butter.

Do you mind playing with some mild tearing?

I'm playing Crash and Spyro ganes right now and I'm enjoying them very much. There seems to be some very slight tearing but I don't want the input latency with VSync and every other setting does not fix it. I just wanted to see if there's anyone else that doesn't mind some mild tearing.

I love Interpol so much!

I just wanted to post this as an appreciation for this fucking GOATED band. The two new songs are absolutely fantastic and I've had them on repeat all day.

As a big enjoyer of their lesser acclaimed work (Interpol - El Pintor (kinda) - Marauder - The Other Side of Make-Believe), which I consider to be very underrated in the grander picture of music culture, I expect this album to be their best since Our Love To Admire or even possibly Antics.

I'm just glad they still leave a big impression on me after all these years, one of the best bands of all time, I'm not even glazing.

Does pad wear make headphones sound better or worse?

I see differing opinions all the time about this, and I'm just wondering what's the general consensus.

Especially HD 500 series pads... Will the pad wear make it sound worse or better? Some people say it loses some sub bass and air and becomes dullers, others say it becomes smoother and richer?

Also, how radical is the change really? For some reason, pad wear having a huge influence on the sound is something that rubs me the wrong way. How often should I change my pads for HD 550, then?

Does someone have a deeper insight on how Sennheiser pads affect the sound of the headphones. Also, I heard 500 series are more sensitive regarding pad wear compared to other headphones. Is that true?

What album has you constantly reaching for the volume knob?

Kind of a random question, but I was listening to Jay-Z's The Blueprint and was surprised by how inconsistent with the overall volume it is. Some tracks like Takeover and Izzo are quiet while tracks like Hola Hovito and Heart of the City are twice as loud. Amazing album of course.

Are there any other albums with inconsistent master levels?

Do you really think James is pretentious?

Cambridge Dictionary: "Pretentious is an adjective describing someone or something that tries to appear more important, intelligent, or cultured than they actually are. It typically involves an exaggerated or insincere effort to impress others."

James is commonly accused of being pretentious. Even in his own documentary Shut Up And Play The Hits the interviewer says "I know you're a fan of pretension" (which was kinda weird lmao). However, is he really pretentious in your personal opinion?

I honestly never thought of him or LCD's music as pretentious. I think he's smart, culturally engaged and aware, and turned out to be quite an important figure in 2000s/2010s indie music. I also think he injects his songs with just the right amount of importance that they deserve, if that makes sense. Like, Losing My Edge, All My Friends, Home, New York I Love You and American Dream have a sense of great importance, but they don't feel pretentious to me, because they earned that sense of importance. He never comes off as disingenuous to me. Also, he's shown that he's not above some "stupid" punk song like Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, North American Scum, Movement, Drunk Girls, Give It Up etc. with equal effortlessness or without sounding forced. All his songs have a sense of still being "down to earth". I don't understand why someone would say he's pretentious. He's actually one of the last that comes to mind for me. So, if someone with a differing opinion could explain, I would be very interested to hear it.

Do you think Vol.2... Hard Knock Life deserves more praise?

I have a feeling that this record's reputation waned over time, and it kinda saddens me, because I think it's among Jay's 5 classics, alongside Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album and 4:44.

Everybody comments on the production being dated, and while I do understand where they're coming from I don't really agree all that much. It sounds amazing to me to this day. Also, for being his pop breakthrough record, it's incredibly inaccessible and challenging. Like, this shit sounds like the prototype of a lot of experimental hip-hop (think about JPEGMAFIA or Death Grips) out there today. Idk, I just love how droney and in a way rigid, these beats sound.

I have a feeling this album is less and less considered a classic among his catalog, which is a shame imo. Even Jay considers it a classic, so there's that at least. What do you guys think?

Production on Utopia overrated?

I constantly see the opinion that Utopia is his best produced album, which I don't really get tbh.

I love the beats, and the versatility. But I don't particularly like how it sounds. The mixing is much drier and grainy compared to other albums. Also there seems to be a bit less edgy vocal processing that I think really fits his sound. Also, other albums seem wider and less claustrophobic.

Idk, in my opinion, it doesn't touch Rodeo or Astroworld production/mixing-wise.

Can someone shed a light on why Utopia's production is regarded so highly?
