So with Claude’s decision to watermark, plus basic data privacy concerns , I’m thinking of switching to a local LLM
How I use Claude pro now:
-managing health docs and results (very happy to switch this to local, doesn’t need a big context I think)
- scientific research, including reading and analyzing PDFs that are complex , requiring linking concepts and ideas across papers and producing summaries / insights / tables (large context required). For example, I have filled 40% of the Claude project folder with files and docs it needs to consider
- basic stuff (acting like an advanced search tool for admin stuff / planing stuff / nothing major) - no reason this can’t stay with Claude but if I switch over to a local LLM I would bring everything with me
Sooo , given this - is 32GB RAM on something like a Mac Mini realistic for my use case ? Or do i need 64gb (at which point i think maybe it’s too costly for me to do). I also tend to work in bursts so I would be happy if it’s not too slow thus impeding my workflow. Fine to run overnight though. And I don’t need any headroom as I will be running the OS and apps on a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air

Recently got this setup for when I’m at parent’s place and looking to get the most from it as it’s not as nice as my main setup I’m used to (Lelit Anita and df54).
Infuser was used for like $150
Baratza ESp new was $200
Felt like a good setup for $350 all in. The grinder also had to be capable for French press and pourover
The Baratza ESP is nice for its range but it needs to go all the way down to setting #2 , which is nearly at zero in order to pull a shot in a reasonable time. The steps are ok, and retention is reasonable but the distribution could be better. Would slow feeding it help with this?
I have a proper tamper and a bottomless portafilter on the way.
I haven’t played around too much with the program options for pre infusion, just doing the normal double shot with 18g dose and it auto shuts off based on volume. Can get close to 30seconds and ~35g with some nice to decent tasting shots
Anyone have a similar setup? Any recommendations where to invest or focus? WDT? playing around with pre infusion?
Also what’s up with the steam wand - is it meant to automatically just start when you’re preheating it ? Seems like a weird function as it makes a mess haha
I disconnected due to playing via GeForce Now and my internet being unstable so the program crashed
However there was 30 seconds left on SS Timer and I was clearly about to win
I had such an army lead that as the last minute ticked down I stormed his base with about 75 royal knights (well all this action was clearly too much for GeForce now and my internet connection)
So I assumed I would get a loss , for the first few hours it hasn’t yet processed and now I see it’s “invalid”?!
Never saw that result before … anyone know ? Was it reviewed manually? (Seems very unlikely)
I have an older Mac keyboard and downloaded the OWC ejector app and gave the app permissions and still my keyboard won’t work …
Even tried with a USB extender from Apple, which should have solved it , but it didn’t work either :/

so this is an older model wired keyboard (the one with the number pad) , it works great as a wired keyboard BUT it won't connect to my M-series macbook air
I have tried many many ways.
- directly into the back of my Thunderbolt display
- directly into my Macbook Air (M4) with a USB-C adapter
- using an Apple USB extension cable (saw on reddit this may help)
- via my OWC 11-port Thunderbolt Dock
- even downloaded the OWC Dock Ejector app on my mac
The core issue (as I understand it) is that these older keyboards need a certain amount of power via the port, which causes them to not be recognized on modern Macs. This thread from 5 years ago discusses it .
The solution of using a USB extender worked the first time I plugged it in, then not afterwards ... can anyone help with a long-term and stable solution?

Using it for a bike project and I think the two bits together isn’t robust enough since the big end will go into another tool at the end
So would prefer one bit that combines these two. Does it exist? Sorry I am a noob to power tools :)

Built my dad a touring bike on a 52cm and I think it’s a bit small for him, so also willing to swap (color of his 52cm is a blue grey)
Pulled a shot and chocked it to double check , my pressure gauge isn’t reacting
Machine is used but it previously worked no issue , and now recently the pressure gauge stopped reacting
Not sure if this also affects the “programmed” infusion / shot timer
Anyone experienced this ? How to fix it ?

Sonoma OS is saved to thumb drive
Device is MacBook Air 13” early 2015 (8gb ram, i5, 124gb ssd)
Device is currently running 10.13.6 High Sierra
Am I doing the wrong process in starting the MacBook Air with CMD + Option to install the new OS ?

My Breville Smart Grinder Pro is finally breathing its final death …. So looking for a replacement on rather short notice (so short shipping time is valuable)
Mainly for pour over, occasional espresso on a Breville Infuser
Also considering a DF54 …. Tempting but it will take about a week to arrive

Then if I open the installer via the Finder (just to see what happens) it says my OS can’t run this program
So my question is:
- do I need to update the MacBook Air OS somehow before installing Sonoma ? I told the OpenCore program when I downloaded the OS to the USB what the target device was so I thought it would be compatible ; or
- am I doing the wrong process in starting the MacBook Air with CMD + Option to install the new OS ?
- or is there some other way to troubleshoot

A kind of neat kit , a bit over designed but if you have the space I think it’s a nice item
Flow is rather slow for a 2 cup setup, seems it needs a corse grind or faster flowing papers

Trying to reset an older MacBook Air
Booted in recovery mode and deleted what I though was the main drive
Rebooted in recovery mode to install OS
OS install couldn’t find a disk (photo 2)
Returned to disk utility page and unsure which to delete / reformat to make a clean install of the OS (photo 1)
Any help?
