A little while ago I posted about a reg i bought with a bunch of equipment for $45, I bought the lot for the wetsuit and fins so the reg was "free"
Responses were mixed but I figured some of you might want to know what i ended up doing with it.
Before you is the reg i came up with, i got a set of matching oceanic alpha octo and regs with a first stage freshly rebuilt from a semi local dive shop, and the guage console and dive computer checked out, salvaged the bcd inflator hose too. New battery and oring for the computer and the grand total for the reg was south of 200.
Is it new gear? No, far from. But its affordable and freshly serviced.
So, I want a small boat for lakes near me, ill start by saying im not in this to "own a boat" i want it pretty much exclusively to support diving and where i live the lakes are frozen about half the year.
So, from where im sitting this seems like a great option. As I've priced it out its about 1k to get a 3-4m one of these with freight and a small 4-6hp outboard, would weight a bit under 200lbs including motor and the heaviest single part would be about 80lbs, so more then light enough for me and my dive buddy to be able to pick up and carry. Load capacity is listed around 600lbs which should be plenty for two people and dive gear, and is almost double a similar size aluminum boat.
The floor is in sections and it rolls up to about the size of a large ikea bag, so should be able to fit in a regular suv or big car.
Honestly it seems perfect, but I keep feeling like there has to be a catch. Obviously freight and dealing directly with a Chinese manufacturer isn't very convenient, but I've ordered a number of things directly from manufacturer and I think im fairly realistic about it... am I missing something?
I always hear about how expensive and how much of a pain boats are, it seems crazy that all my needs would be meet for about a grand, too good to be true?
If any of yall have one of these please tell me about your experience
Hey everyone, im planning to learn diving in the near future and bought some used gear for a wetsuit and fins (whole lot was $45 so it was worth it just for the suit and fins imo) but it also came with this reg set up, im counting it as pretty much free but is it worth taking to get serviced or should I just toss it and get something else after learning?
Thanks for the info guys, I think im gonna take the first stage and guage console for service and toss the rest, maybe save the hoses, look for a newer 2nd and octo
Ive been looking at getting into diving as I have a friend thats certified and want to go, but the absolute cheapest I've been able to find a course is over $900 total just for the basic open water cert.
I understand its important training but spending a grand on the certification alone is completely off the table, anyone know a place in New England thats more affordable?
Edit: with a little more looking it looks like its about 400$ cheaper to drive up to Montreal and do it in Canada so im gonna do that
Waiting on the fcg in the mail, but will be doing a 3 round burst frt, upper is a retro Olympic arms 16in, lower is new parts
