Barkmarket - Dumbjaw (Recorded off MTV 120 Minutes Dec 05 1993)

From executive producer Rick Rubin, this video is from Barkmarket's 1993 album Gimmick. This would be the first of 2 releases on Rick's American Recordings. Highly recommend this entire album!

I used the same OG beta max transfer source that was used for the version that's on youtube, but it should sound and look a bit better here since it doesn't get butchered by youtube's standard def encoding - Enjoy!

Glassjaw - Ape Dos Mil (Version from 2002 W&T EnhancedCD)

Hey all! I found my W&T EnhancedCD I bought back when it came out and wanted to share 1 of the 3 videos it had on it, exactly as they are on the disc. This is the "alternate" version for Ape Dos Mil (even though it was the only vid that we knew of when the album came out).

Videos for Cosmopolitan Blood Loss and Must've Run All Day are on there as well. The Cosmo video is the same "TV Edit" version where the guy just stares at the band at the end (lol). The Ape vid is my fav of the 3 on the disc.

The Must've video is the one with the kids, but what's cool about the that video version is it has an actual "un-merged" ending like the Advanced CD did (instead of merging with/going straight into Stuck Pig). It ends with a snare. I still prefer it going straight into Stuck Pig, of course, but it's a cool unique thing. If you have this CD, it's probably on your disc too!

Inspecting the files a bit more, all 3 are quicktime .mov files, and the Ape Dos Mil video looks like it was encoded by a company called "Metro Encoding, Inc" on May 13 2002 (found in the mediainfo export). I had to encode this to mp4 to share here, but otherwise left it as-is.

Pretty cool, today is May 14th so almost exactly 24 years ago they made this video. What a trip - Enjoy!

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Head On (Recorded off MTV 120 Minutes March 13 1994)

Hey all!

This clip is from a super-clean beta max transfer of the MTV 120 Minutes episode that aired on March 13 1994. The guests on that episode were Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees and Mike Johnson + J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.

From JAMC's 1989 album, Automatic, this music video was still in rotation 5 years after it came out! This was aided, in part, by Pixies' 1991 cover, featured as the first single on their album "Trompe Le Monde" - which also had it's own video released for it.

From the legendary DVD commentary of Armageddon (1998). I thought it would be appreciated here if anyone on the sub hadn't heard it yet. It's so good! I left in part of Michael Bay's response at the very end which is pretty funny as well.

Tool at '93 Lollapalooza - Sweat (snippet) + Maynard talking about Sober video + Sober (video) - June 27 1993 Recorded off MTV 120 Minutes

Hey all!

Let's go back almost 33 years. It's the summer of '93, Lollapalooza just kicked off, and Tool is still playing the second stage at this point.

On this episode, Host Lewis Largent is interviewing members from the bands, playing their videos, and talking to people at the show. He got his nose pierced at a booth right before this interview (probably why he's stuttering a bit haha).

There are snippets of Tool playing "Sweat", then a very short interview with Maynard talking about the "Sober" video and how they've worked with Fred Stuhr in the past on "Opiate", then they play the video.

Other bands that played that day were also interviewed during this episode: Alice in Chains, Rage Against The Machine, Primus, Babes in Toyland, Front 242, Arrested Development, Dinosaur Jr, and Fishbone.

Late 80's/Early 90's cool points to whoever names the next video correctly!

Tour Date:

The Gorge Amphitheater, George, WA (June 19, 1993)

Green Day at the Gavin Convention - First MTV interview + Knowledge (snippet) + Longview (video) February 27 1994 (Recorded off MTV 120 Minutes)

Let's go wayyyy back to February 27th, 1994!

Dookie hasn't been released for a whole month yet, people are just now starting to see Green Day on TV across the US, and the boys are having a great time together.

In this video, there is a short snippet of them playing their cover of "Knowledge" by Op Ivy, a short interview, and then the full video for "Longview". This is the 3rd time Longview was played on MTV 120 Minutes, and their first MTV interview.

They discuss Mike's theory of their success, how the boys all met, whether punk is having a comeback, and their feelings on censorship!

"What could be the big story of 1994... Green Day" haha - indeed.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there, and enjoy the vid!

Down In It Music Video TV World Premiere - November 19th 1989 MTV 120 Minutes - info/sources in description!

Hello all!

The main segment of this clip is the complete premiere of the music video for "Down In It" on November 19 1989, including intro from Host Dave Kendall. He introduces this is a "Cutting Edge Clip", and then name drops Trent, Flood, John Fryer, Adrian Sherwood, and Keith LeBlanc.

During this era of the show, when playing a video from a featured new artist for the first time, they would often label them "Cutting Edge Clip".

The second portion of this clip (last 20 seconds) comes from a "120 Minutes Flashback" outro/bumper that was used during the November 16th 1997 episode featuring Green Day, during the Matt Pinfield era of the show.

On the 11/16/97 episode, right after playing Aphex Twin's "Come To Daddy", this bumper/outro plays with a crawl at the bottom while a short clip of "Down In It" plays on a chalkboard. The crawl reads, "This week in 1989, NIN's "Down in it" debuted on 120 Minutes." That episode mentioned in the crawl is this same 11/19/89 episode in the first clip.

Filming happened in September 1989, and TVT shipped the promo VHS tapes out in October 1989 to various industry people, including at least MTV and Billboard.

In Billboard's October 28th 1989 issue, the first documented review of the promo tape by Bill Coleman of Billboard was published (very bottom left).

Deborah Harry's "I Want That Man" video from that same Billboard review section was also featured on this same 11/19/89 120 Minutes episode - immediately after "Down In It". I left a bit of that video intro in at the end in order to show continuity.

I find it interesting that the runtime is listed as 6min 58sec in the Billboard review - anyone know any more about that? Has anyone seen one of these tapes? At least a few must exist since that was the only medium Billboard accepted at the time (per that very same review section). I think even the uncut (non-MTV) version with Trent presumed dead on the ground is sub-4min? I suppose it's possible the "6" is a misprint, and should've been a "3". Anyway, just found that interesting!

Hope you all enjoyed this blast from the past. It was fun figuring it all out and tracking everything down!

Curve - Fait Accompli (w/ Toni Halliday intro - April 26 1992 Recorded off MTV 120 Minutes)

Let's go back to April 26th 1992!

Curve's Fait Accompli is #1 on the College Radio charts here in the US, and we're watching MTV 120 Minutes too late on a Sunday night.

Before the video, host Dave Kendall plays a short clip speaking with Toni Halliday of Curve about her thoughts on the "shoegazer" label and how quickly journalists lump artists into a scene instead of focusing on how they are pushing music forward. My Bloody Valentine, Lush, and Ride are also briefly mentioned.
