Lady beetles from the backyard

A few little lady beetle friends I found hanging out last night 🐞🌿
Couldn’t pick just one shot so I threw a little collage together. The tiny details on these guys are insane once you get close enough …. especially that weird little “M” shape on their faces 😅

Shot handheld on the Sony A7R III + Laowa 90mm 2x Ultra Macro
Lit with the Neewer Z2 Pro and AK diffuser. Mostly around f/8 at 1/160–1/250.

Macro photography has me noticing stuff I’d normally walk right past.💜

P. Scaber and a. Vulgare

Got some shots tonight of both my Porcellio scaber and Armadillidium vulgare. One of the scabers showed up with this really cool pink/orange coloration mixed in with my koi + lava colony and immediately caught my eye.
The colors and textures on these little guys are honestly insane once you get close enough.

Drosera hercules

Beauty can be cruel. and nowhere is that more visible than in the slow, deliberate trap of a sundew.

A fly struggles as it’s drawn deeper into a field of glistening mucilage on my Drosera Hercules, each droplet acting like a living glue. The gel maintains a naturally highly acidic pH of around 5.0. When an insect is trapped, the struggle triggers electrical signals across the leaf. The plant then floods the mucilage with a cocktail of powerful digestive enzymes (like proteases, chitinases, and acid phosphatases). This turns the sticky drop from an adhesive into an acidic, chemical bath that liquefies the insect’s soft tissues over a few days so the leaf can absorb the nutrients. The plant doesn’t rush. It doesn’t need to. It simply waits, tightens, and consumes ….. a quiet, methodical predator disguised as something delicate and Beautiful!

Shot handheld on my Sony A7R III paired with the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO lens.
My Neewer Z2 Pro flash, and softened through my AK diffuser.

no focus stacking, just timing, patience, and chasing a moment most people walk right past.

Nature is incredible…. A small world where stillness is the weapon, and beauty is the lure.

“I suddenly understand the insects that fly willingly into carnivorous plants. The draw is too strong, the pull too bewitching, that you forget about the danger until you’re already trapped inside.”— Raven Kennedy

Drosera hercules

Tonight’s subject is a fly trapped in the grasp of my new Drosera hercules. 🪰🌱

Watching carnivorous plants work up close is almost alien. Every red tentacle is covered in sticky mucilage droplets that look beautiful… right until something lands.

These were all shot handheld, single-shot, manual focus — no focus stacking. Still teaching myself macro photography just bought my first camera and lens around February, honestly pretty proud of how these turned out. 🙏🙂🖤

Gear & settings:
Sony A7R III 📸
Laowa 90mm Ultra 2.0 lens
Neewer Z2 pro flash + AK diffuser
1:1 magnification
f/8 | ISO 160 | 1/250
Manual focus
