Reddit's new keyword moderation AI bots are...

Ridiculous.

Yep, you read that right, bots. RIDICULOUS.

I have never had any major issues making posts and comments on Reddit, but just had to cut the word RIDICULOUS out of a comment in another sub in order to post it. It was flagged as 'insensitive' before I was even done writing the comment. The context? The OP asked if some of her outfits looked ridiculous. I responded by saying, 'They do not look ridiculous,' and added something about her having a quirky style. Weeeeeeellllllll, apparently using the word 'ridiculous' in response to a post asking if something looked RIDICULOUS meant I was being mean and inconsiderate.

Except that I was not. I removed the offending word (a word that, again, was in the post title), and it allowed me to post a response. Essentially the same response with the same core message and tone, but lacking one terrible, awful, offensive word that surely would have broken OP's poor delicate heart. /s

So. I guess context does not matter. At all.

Good job, reddit. Way to go. Cut humans out of human interaction. That'll certainly go well for you.

Widows Bay is proof...

...that you can cast a show entirely with character actors and have it be a rousing success.

What makes an actor a character actor? Traditionally, they would not be cast in a standard leading man/woman role, but you'd see them in the supporting cast. At present, I would add that character actors tend to look more like regular people. I don't think I saw a jot of botox on screen the whole time I was watching it. I don't think I saw a single man or woman among the main cast who'd be picked as the lead in a standard Hollywood rom-com (maybe Matthew Rhys when he was young, but he ain't young anymore). But I did see a lot of folks who look like people you walk past in the grocery every day. Normal. People. Not celebrities.

The show is well-written and well cast, but it is also just refreshing to look at. I can suspend my disbelief. I can wholly believe that these are regular small town New Englanders. Patricia is the closest thing we have to a leading lady, and the actress is cute, but she's cute on a regular looking person spectrum, not as some preened and plucked and jabbed and tucked Hollywood bimbo. And thank god!!! After her, you have Dale Dickey and a whole host of middle-aged and older, completely normal looking women. Women who look they age they are.

I want more shows filled with utterly normal looking people. I want more shows where the script isn't edited to death by studio executives. I want more character actors given chances to fill out juicy roles and show REAL EMOTION because they haven't mutilated themselves at the altar of Eternal Youth.

I want more Widows Bay!

Edit:

Thank you to those who understand I am not directing slander at the cast for not being a bunch of generic pretty people.

At no point did I suggest Rhys isn't attractive. Or that he hasn't acted as a leading man or taken lead roles. (I mean, duh. He's the LEAD in the SHOW.) Nor did l suggest any of the other performers haven't themselves been leads, or aren't capable of being leads, or that their current or prior work is less than because they are, yes, character actors.

But everyone on this show is on it as a character actor. (Yes, even the lovely Betty Gilpin.) That's kind of the point. And loads of character actors step into lead roles. But they are still character actors, playing distinct and unique roles.

Hollywood 'leading men' and 'leading ladies' aren't that. They are charismatic and gorgeous. They might even be talented. But they aren't unique, distinct, versatile performers. They can easily be swapped out with each other while achieving a similar result. You can't do that with character actors. No one, and I mean No One, is going to replace Dale Dickey with similar results. Or Matthew Rhys. Or Kate O'Flynn.

I stand by my assessment of Matthew Rhys as a distinctly and versatile character actor, along with the rest of the cast. Who, yes, has had the good fortune of being offered lead roles.

You can be a character actor and also be hot, btw. (Ahem, Betty Gilpin.)

Character actors are not defined by ugliness. They are not inherently unattractive. But you DO have to be more interesting than someone like Kate Hudson or Glen Powell. You have to be much more than a pretty face.

There isn't a single conventional red carpet walking "lead actor" in the cast, and thank gooooooood.

Judge my SA itinerary!

Partner and I are planning the following road trip for mid-August. We'll be there for about two weeks (14 days). The length of time we plan to spend in each location is still up in the air. Part of the time we'll be sleeping in a campervan, part of it will be in hotels and airbnbs.

We are longing to see some big desert landscapes and are debating tacking Kangaroo island on at the end of the trip, though that will depend on our timeframe/energy. As it is, we've got about 2k km worth of driving ahead of us.

Adelaide: 2 days (including day we fly in)

Flinders Range: 3-4 days

Maree & Coward Springs: 2-3 days

Coober Pedy: 1-2 days

Woomera: 1 day

Adelaide: 1 day

(tentative) Kangaroo island: 1-2 days

Adelaide: Day we fly out

So, thoughts? Suggestions? Is it worth it to cut things short up north to try and get down to kangaroo island, or would it be better to take our time and just take in the desert?
