Grew up with a self hating parent. How do I heal?

I am raised in a lesser developed and somehow racist Southeast Asian country that I'm trying to leave but is still stuck inside it and I'm more South Asian presenting. The country forces their non-indigenous ethnic minorities to adopt the names of the dominant ethnic group, which does not even have surnames. You're not allowed to use your ethnic surnames and names if you are a non-indigenous ethnic minority in your legal documents, government school papers or job brochures. You are only allowed to use your ethnic names with your friends and family. Most minorities in my country, including South Asians, lost their surnames and couldn't track them because of this. Because of this reason, it makes it easier for my dad to hide his heritage. Because of this, blanqueamiento happens here sometimes depending on the situation. Both of my parents are narcissists. I have a self-hating South Asian father who thinks if you're racist against other South Asians and that if you and your descendants marry South East Asians or East Asians, you'll be accepted by ethnic South East Asians and your children will be free from the racism. Despite this, me and my brother turned out to look more South Asian. Even though my dad hid his heritage from the family, he would take us to South Asian restaurants quite often. My Eurasian mom and her family would sometimes make fun of me and my brother's features, like telling me why my eyes are like that..telling me why my mouth looks like that..telling us not to grow facial hair because it'll make us look like <slur for South Asians>. Because of this trauma, I can't even date anyone who isn't South Asian or mixed with South Asian.

Why do half-South Asian half-East Asian men tend to look more or are more easier to pass as South Asian than their female counterparts to most people?

u/Comprehensive-Map449 — 8 days ago

What ethnicities are you mistaken for without facial hair?

I heard most people don't know what South Asian men look like without facial hair. For me, I am told I look Malay or Latino without facial hair but South Asian with it. It's annoying to me when I get mistaken for Malay or Latino.

Where do I pass more? (South asian + (East Asian + SouthEast Asian + white))

Some insecurities I am dealing with is that I don't want to look pure Southeast Asian since I grew up with a self hating abusive South Asian father who downplayed his heritage (I grew up in a Southeast Asian country). Mother is also narcissistic. I am trans male but is pre-T due to being stuck in a transphobic country so the last image is a prediction of me with facial hair (I just added facial hair).

Where do you think I pass more?

How do you hide your pre-T/egg self when you lived in a transphobic country for 0-mid 20s of your life?

I was cursed by fate to be born in a transphobic country where it is legally required to use your birth name for education, work and documents. Most educational institutions and companies like to post pictures of their employees/students (sometimes with their names in it) on Facebook and don't like it when you tell them to take it down.

I've identified as trans male since a teen.

I made a reddit community for South Asians in Myanmar

https://www.reddit.com/r/BurmeseDesi/

This is a space to discuss our experiences, history, culture, food, languages, identity, and daily life in Myanmar. Whether your family has lived in Myanmar for generations or you currently live there, you're welcome here.

Our experiences are often different from those of South Asian diaspora communities elsewhere, so this subreddit is dedicated to conversations specific to Myanmar.

Is moving to India instead of Thailand temporarily for a year worth it? (Trans male)

Hi guys. I am a South Asian from Myanmar who is 4th generation diaspora. I am torn between whether to choose Thailand or India as a bridge before I move to the West and I want to start testosterone quicker. The country I live in has a military conscription for people aged 18-35. I have no money yet to move abroad and I am still studying at an international college so this question is for 2028-2029.

How do I stop romanticising India?

Hi guys. I am part of the South Asian diaspora in an authoritarian Southeast Asian country and I am a 4th gen. I have no money yet to move abroad and I am still studying at an international college. Additionally, the country has a weak passport. Living here traumatised me because even the teachers are racist and the country itself is somehow nationalistic, have huge ethnic pride and pro-Buddhist. The country I live in has a military conscription for people aged 18-35.

How do I look more South Asian as a pre t? I don't want to get read as a Malay.

I (trans male) have a South Asian (North Indian) dad and a hapa/wasian (Burmese, English, Chinese) mom. How do I look more South Asian as a pre t (I can't go on testosterone yet because I am living in a transphobic country)? My eyes have the same size and similar region between the eyes and the brows as South Asians and I have no epicanthic fold but my medial canthus is curved. I have a puffy face and I think that's what makes me appear ambiguous. When I had long hair (don't have a pic anymore) in my teens (not girlmoding since I knew I was trans at 14, but because I wasn't allowed to cut my hair), I could pass for a South Asian girl.

I've been told I look like a mix between Vidyut Jammwal and a younger Shahid Kapoor.

There is a joke going around that combining South asian and East Asian genes make you look South East Asian or Malay. Personally, I don't think I look Malay but some people think I do. I don't get mistaken for Southeast Asians with epicanthic folds and monolids but with Malays and Filipinos that overlap with South Asians in features.

I am from Myanmar. I am south asian. In Myanmar, South Asians and Chinese are forced to have Burmese names (e.g. Waiyan Paing) in legal documents. The Burmese doesn't have surnames. How do I change my surname legally to a South Asian one after migrating to Belgium?

Hello, South Asians raised in Myanmar. How did you change your legal surname from a Burmese one (which was forced upon in Myanmar) into a South Asian one after you get a citizenship abroad?

Having suicidal thoughts. I need help to stop it.

I can't find a job online with cryptocurrency. International payments like PayPal does not allow people in my country to open accounts. Nobody wants to buy my art commissions. I asked my friend abroad to accept the money from me using PayPal and then send it back to my account on a crypto bank. But my friend refused. I am trapped in Myanmar. My parents don't accept me for who I am and are abusive. They want me to be their submissive little daughter who can't grow up and should live together with them forever. I am not allowed to get a job until I finish college. They force me to let them check my accounts. I don't have the choice to make my own decisions. Myanmar has a military conscription. I am stuck in a racist authoritarian country with cisnormative gender roles. I currently run a webcomic and its about three male friends. My main characters are often men because I wasn't allowed to be a man. I wasn't allowed to be an adult. These comics are the only way I can experience manhood. I am not sure if my parents will restrict me getting jobs forever, let me get a job after college or force marry me to a straight man. Myanmar has a military conscription for people aged 18-35. My parents say I don't matter because they believe I won't get conscripted due to being born with a vagina. I am forced to agree with everything my parents say. If life is worth living and suicide is a permanant solution to temporary problems, why does this seem like forever? Nobody wants to help me or understand my problems. I haven’t killed myself because I don't want to regret it and I knew there is hope but in the future I don’t know whether or not I will be able to break free of my parents and my country or live as a trans man who is transitioning or being himself instead of pretending to be a girl forever. I am not sure if running away without any money after college is worth it. I can't go outside without parental permission. Even if I want to travel with a relative without them, they wouldn't allow me because they think I might run away. I have dreams of opening my own business, starting HRT and traveling abroad but my parents seem like they have control over me forever.

If life is worth living, why am i suffering everyday?

When I ask mainstream communities for advice, they don't get it. They tell me I can do anything and go outsidebecause I am an adult and this is a "me" problem because I am letting myself abused because I can't stand up for myself.
