how an American from Philadelphia brought apples to the Himalayas

This is an appreciation post for a man who traveled from the United States in the early 1900s and changed the fate of the Himalayan region forever—turning an isolated mountain belt into one of India’s most prosperous apple-producing powerhouses.
Samuel Evans Stokes (later known as Satyananda Stokes) was a 21-year-old American Quaker from Philadelphia who first arrived in India in 1904. Captivated by the beauty of the Himalayas, he eventually settled down in Thanedar, near Shimla—which served as the summer capital of British India.
Seeing the local population struggling with poverty and a lack of cash crops, Stokes recognized the region's climate was ideal for fruit cultivation. He wrote back home to his mother in the US, who sent him a batch of Starking Delicious (Red Delicious) apple saplings as a gift.
Those initial saplings sparked a agricultural revolution:
An Economic Transformation: Stokes distributed saplings to local farmers, taught them modern horticultural techniques, and helped establish supply chains. Within a few decades, Shimla and the surrounding Himachal region transformed into an "apple goldmine," driving widespread prosperity. Today, these apples are locally known as Royal Delicious.
A Unique Place in History: Beyond agriculture, Stokes deeply integrated into the local culture, learned Pahari and Sanskrit, converted to Hinduism, and actively joined the Indian Independence Movement. He holds the distinction of being the only American imprisoned by the British for participating in India’s freedom struggle.
His legacy lives on today—his descendants still reside in Thanedar, tending to the original family orchards. Just wanted to share this fascinating piece of apple history with everyone here! 🍎✨

After almost a month of using the Vivo X300 Ultra, here are my biggest criticisms of the device.

I've been using the Vivo x300 Ultra for over three weeks and this is what I have to say about origin OS.

We all know origin OS is butterly smooth and looks cool but that aside, these are my critics

OriginOS still has a long way to go before it can match One UI in terms of customization, automation, and overall reliability.

Some of the things that really disappoint me:

You can't customize theme packs.

You can't select and drag multiple apps from the app drawer to the home screen at once.

You can't have a completely empty home screen page just to admire your wallpaper you need to leave at least one app on it.

There's no automation or routines. I can't tell the phone, "Whenever I plug in my charger, automatically enable bypass charging."

I also can't create a routine that says, "When I launch CODM, switch the refresh rate to 144Hz, then switch it back to 120Hz when I close the game."

*The UI is really inconsistent and doesn't have a unique feel to it

*Widgets can't be resized (Very annoying)

*The device just doesn't work the way I thought it would.

*Another major bug I found on this device is when you are in landscape mode, in a game for example and you drag the status bar to have a uicl glance on the apps notification, time or whatever, you can't swipe up back for that status bar to close,it has to close few seconds later this is so annoying especially when I play games.

*Also My Vivo X300 Ultra constantly bugs out whenever I connect an external SSD. It restarts so often that it's become incredibly frustrating.

*Last but not least, you can't use many system apps in landscape mode or can't even rotate the home screen to landscape mode.

There are a lot more but I hope vivo addresses these major issues

And those are just a few examples. In 2026, routines should be a standard feature on every flagship smartphone.

Yes, OriginOS is smooth and fluid, but there's more to a great operating system than smooth scrolling. It's the smart features, automation and minute things that really define an OS today.

Then there's the camera. It's not optimized at all. The camera app is a battery hog, which is especially disappointing because the camera was the main reason I bought this phone. Seeing such poor optimization in the one area that mattered most to me honestly makes me question whether I made the right decision.

I'm not here to piss off any vivo fans but truth be told, origin OS has a long way to go compared to other well thought OS

Peace out ✌️

Protest results have started coming in

Dear protesters. Been saying this since day 01. And you guys are the only ones who have dubbed police as merciless and goons. So why expect any sympathy from them now? You have no idea how hopeless it can be running btwn police stations and Courts. And remember even judiciary is not found of you guys. And chances are high the BJP may win next elections. You guys are literally looking at 7 to 8 years of police cases. Say bye bye to your career.

My two annas about this so called peaceful protest.

This protest is just old rotten wine in a fancy new bottle. Opposition knows it's do or die for them in 2029, so they're leaving no stone unturned in their desperation. US has already said on record they won't repeat the China mistake with India. Obviously, most big countries prefer a weak and tame India anyway.

And the less said about our two attached toilets, the better.

For eg here is a statement from one of the protester:

>17 year old R**hi Me*#a -

>I am going back home. I can't do this anymore. There are literally 5 goons around every genuine student. My brother and sister were protecting a Delhi Police officer because we had met him before, gave toffees to him and he told us if any problem occurs we can reach out to him. Last night, he didn't even have a stick in his hand. He was just asking everyone to move aside.

>Suddenly, 10-15 goons attacked him and shouted, "Tujhe bhi Ratan Lal banayenge." I didn't understand it at that moment but when we searched on google, we found that Ratan Lal was a police officer who lost his life during a riot in 2020.

>We were shocked. The most shocking part is that even the people leading the protest know about this but they are not doing anything. I want a career and I don't want to get into any trouble. If you are a student, just get out of this facade. Otherwise, you could end up ruining your career along with these goons."

I don't give one flying Fcuk if you dub me IT cell or andhbhakt. So called protesters are putting innocent lives in danger in name of protest and should be ashamed of it.

Here is another eg of a "hero" police constable who joined them

>Uttarakhand Police said the constable has already been under suspension for a prolonged period and dismissal proceedings against him were already underway in connection with a serious criminal case.

>Sher Singh has a prior criminal history and had allegedly worked with notorious gangster Praveen Valmiki and another associate in organised crime.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.indiatoday.in/amp/india/story/uttarakhand-police-action-against-constable-sher-singh-over-jantar-mantar-protest-remarks-2955629-2026-07-25

More than 400 criminals at the protest as per facial recognition data

https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/400-criminals-spotted-around-jantar-mantar-protest-site-between-july-20-and-24-delhi-police-2955681-2026-07-24

These are 3 among 100s of examples out there.

Funny how the "revolution" always seems to find perfect timing.

Monsoon Session starts. FCRA Amendment Bill is on the table. A bill that could tighten the screws on foreign funding flowing into NGOs and activist networks. And suddenly the drama meter shoots through the roof.

Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

Nobody's saying every protester is on someone's payroll. Plenty of people show up because they genuinely believe in the cause. But don't be naive either. Politics isn't a Bollywood movie where everyone is a saint. Every ecosystem has people who stand to lose money, influence, and relevance if the rules change.

The government says it's about transparency and stopping foreign influence. The opposition says it's an attack on civil society. Fair enough. But if you're wondering why the noise level magically hits 100 exactly when Parliament is about to debate the bill, you're asking the right question.

In politics, nothing gets everyone's ass on fire unless someone's interests are at stake. Follow the timing. Follow the money. Then make up your own mind.

Human Development Index of China, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan, compared to the world average

The average HDI of the world is 0.756, comparable to Paraguay. Only China, Mexico and Brazil have higher HDI than the world average. While South Africa, India, Nigeria and Pakistan have lower HDIs than the world average.

Source: Global data lab

The HDI is made up of four indicators, Life expectancy, Gross National Income per capita PPP, expected years of schooling, and median years of schooling for people over 25 years old. It is the most widely used index to determine development in a country, national figures are published by the United Nation.

Dowry deaths and They don't report it bias..

I again ask why south is always in denial mode. They are making jokes on dark red states. But when dark red goes in their states , they just simply play typical denial card. They don't report sar and we report it. That plane image bla bla.. why this typical denial syndrome is there in south Indians. Is it arrogance or they think they are in Gupta period-?

Average protein intake by state

Banning eggs from mid-day meals leaves out a large section of India from accessing required protein intakes early in life. I will never understand the urge to keep other malnourished and anemic. This kind of forced vegetarianism is the true enemy of appreciating the value of health, nutrition and fitness in India.

Kinnaur - Bridge Collapsed near Urni Dhankk (NH-5 Route)

The bridge collapsed (it connected the Choling -Tapri route)while a dumper was crossing it.

I was in 4th or 5th grade (it was around 2013 -2014 idk exactly) when this bridge was built, along with another one. These bridges served as an alternative for the original main route, which was destroyed in a landslide.

(The driver is safe🙏 )
