Vivo X300 Ultra video is almost perfect—but Vivo needs to fix these 7 urgent issues
Hi everyone. I'm a professional filmmaker based in Hobart, Australia, and I recently purchased the 1TB Vivo X300 Ultra. I've just completed a deep-dive review focused entirely on its filmmaking capabilities.
While there is so much to love about what this amazing device can do when it comes to pro video (especially with MotionCam Pro), I've uncovered 7 key issues that Vivo urgently needs to address in Pro Video Mode if they want this phone to truly rival the iPhone, Samsung S26 Ultra, or Xiaomi 17 Ultra.
I’m sharing these here to:
- Raise awareness for filmmakers and creators currently considering this phone.
- Get the attention of Vivo engineers in the hope they can accelerate bug fixes to resolve these issues.
The 7 Key Issues:
- APV encoding is completely broken. See the example in the video above. Just zoom in and watch how the encoding artefacts ruin what should be a standout feature. It’s strange to me that other reviews haven't covered this yet.
- White balance lock introduces a strong magenta cast. Locking the white balance instantly ruins the image by shifting it heavily toward magenta. It's a frustrating issue, much like what we see on Samsung devices.
- Heavy moiré patterns. There is a massive amount of moiré present in the footage—significantly more than any other flagship phone I've tested recently.
- Ability to disable sharpening and broken noise reduction. There is currently no way to disable digital sharpening in Pro Video Mode. Furthermore, while there is an option to disable noise reduction, toggling it doesn't actually do anything — the heavy noise reduction remains active.
- External SSD recording broken. Currently USB 3 SSDs are incorrectly identified as USB 2.0
- No support for Open Gate recording. Pro Video Mode lacks support for open gate recording to utilize the full sensor. This wouldn't be as massive of an issue if not for problem number seven...
- Vivo Log is locked out of third-party apps. Vivo does not make Vivo Log available to third-party apps like the Blackmagic Camera app. If they opened this up, issues #2, #4, #6, and #7 would be instantly solved by Blackmagic Camera! Samsung successfully made Samsung Log available to third-party developers, and Vivo desperately needs to follow in their footsteps.
Overall, this is the greatest smartphone i've ever used for video thanks to MotionCam Pro and Vivo's amazing hardware. But I want Vivo to fix the issues that plague the native app's Pro Video Mode so we get the iPhone 17 Pro killer the hardware is capable of delivering.
