Is Keaton Verhoeff the best option for the Canucks at #3?
Here's my thought process:
Assumes both McKenna and Stenberg are off the board.
Avoids any unnecessary drama between the Malhotra/Malhotra father-son storyline. (Probably not a real issue, but still)
Canucks likely take the Canadian over the American (Chase Reid).
Solidifies a strong top 4 dcore of Buium, Verhoeff, Willander, and D-Petey who could be with the franchise for the next decade. (Nice blend of size and skill)
Encourages the club to trade Hronek sooner rather than later, which would bring in a major return. (Verhoeff likely joins the team towards the end of next season after another year in the NCAA)
Perhaps this is the "safe" pick but I think it would work out very well for the franchise. Even if Verhoeff isn't an elite player long term he'll still be a stabilizing force in that top 4 which creates a solid foundation for the rebuild. Personally I'd want the Canucks to take the homerun swing and go with the player with the highest upside, however I would understand why they would want to start off the rebuild with a safer pick, bringing in a solid player who will be with the franchise for a long tenure.
