Box of Vintage Gear - Canon FTb and Yashica FX3

Been going through my late mother's old camera gear. The Canon FTB was recently CLA'ed at Garry's Camera and waiting on my first roll of film from the developer (hopefully today!).

The Canon has a 50mm f1.8 lens, a 110/4.0 macro, and a 70-210 zoom lens (macro mode at 70mm). The macro has an extension tube. A bunch of filters including a Hoya center spot and Multivision. The canon had a leather case but it was deteriorating. My dad said she used the macro stuff for taking pictures of her jewelry for magazines or ads.

The other camera is a Yashica FX3. I've redone the light seals, camera bump, fixed the mirror slipping, and ordered some leather from Japan. It only has a 50mm f1.9 lens and a flash (CS-201). The Yashica leather case is in decent shape and needs a spot of glue to reapply one loose bit of leather.

Anyway, the canon is a beast! Body is nearly 2lbs, and with the zoom lens it's close to 5. I'm going to run a roll of film through the Yashica next to see how it works, but I was considering getting a small zoom lens (35-80'ish) for it since the lighter body might make a better "walking around" camera. But that might be silly since I have the 70-210 for the FTb and I'll just wait a year or so to see what I actually "need".

Thanks all, glad to be here and looking forward to this new hobby.

Considering a 2023-2024 Mini SE (USA)

We come from a long line of MINI (and Mini) cars since 2007. We've owned a R56 , R55 (clubman), 1973 Mini 1001, and now a F54 Clubman. The F54 is primarily my wife's car and I drive an Accord.

We are thinking of downsizing the F54 since my wife's commute is about 9 miles each way. We have an outlet where we park our car, so topping off each night (or every few) isn't an issue.

We are in the US and we see that prices go from about 19k private party to about 24k CPO at a MINI dealer. These are just advertised prices. Trade in value of her clubman is about $7500. So financially we are looking at about $15,000 for the MINI SE.

I've test driven one and found them to be very fun, very similar in ride to my R56 with a much better throttle response.

Any good buyer's guides or things to watch out for regarding model years? Would love to get a heated steering wheel since we do not have a garage and winters, while not super cold in Maryland can still be rough when stored outside. I've read that you can schedule the car to pre-condition so that by your departure time the cabin is warmed up (and more importantly the battery?).

I had a Countryman S as a loaner, and the new interior is nice and is a direct call back to the interior in my 1973 Mini (better or for worse!). Either way, we won't get the J01 platform 2 door in the US due to....reasons.

Anyway, kind of a ramble. Any advice?

Swerve into oncoming traffic!

Watch just past the orange construction side you will see a black truck make a left hand turn and a silver car swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid them. Not sure they had enough time to slow down, but it was concerning to see!

Tree branch didn't like my red mirror caps.

After a storm a branch clipped my car and snapped the red mirror cap on my car. Could have been a lot worse. So got some aftermarket carbon fiber looking ones on eBay for about $120. Fitment was pretty good and turns out my other mirror's clips were already broken, so now all mirrors are tight!.

Local Restore Find

$50 per box. Super tempting but might wait to see if they drop in price.

Canon FTb - Mirror Stuck

Recently went through box of my mom's stuff from the 70s/80s and she had a Canon FTb along with some zoom and macro lens for taking photos of her jewelry. I've run 2 rolls of Kodak Ultra 400 and the biggest thing to improve is me. The small thing to improve is that the mirror will get stuck in the up position at shutter speed 60 and sometimes at 125 and 30 (one in ten).

I took off the bottom and everything looks pretty clean. Cleaned up some of the old grease with a cotton tip and some alcohol and added a very very very small amount of TriFlow. I've replaced the light seals and the mirror foam to no change in mirror performance. The mirror goes back up when going to the next exposure.

Epson h901a at ReStore

My local habitat restore has the Epson H901 a for $400. Seems that it’s a pretty good price they go for about 800 used. Is there anything to know about this thing?

Good morning Riviera

Machine was my grandfather’s and as a kid it was my job to turn it on after we were done eating. He passed away a while ago but I refurbished the gaskets and seals and had a local metal shop shine her up. It was a show piece in my dining room for a while but it was a terrible location. Just got back from Sicily and Naples and now the machine lives in the kitchen and has been getting nearly daily use.

TBW underbody Tray: Oil Drain Access Door - Misaligned

Had my local shop install the tray about 6 months ago. I was finally getting around to doing an oil change and the oil door doesn’t line up with the train plug. I have a Fumoto valve installed for quick drains, but even without that valve it looks like the oil would spill directly on the tray.

oil filter door access is fine.

Family Arrivals Procedures?

Heading home FCO to IAD. Family if 4. All of us have global entry. When we land and do the app should all 4 be on the submission or can I do the kids and my wife does hers by herself? Or do we even need to use the app?

Trade in at store - Need Authorized User?

Just ordered my sister a new iPhone 17, shipping to her out of state. She has an older iPhone to trade in and her local store. She is not an authorized user, just standard. Will she be able to do the trade in or do I need to elevate her status on the account?

One Way Rental - Avis

We are coming in for about 7 days mid June. Flying in to Catania and taking the overnight ferry to Naples out of Palermo about a week later. Mostly staying w/ wife's family in Catania. I have Avis Presidential status, for whatever that helps, but I have a few questions. Thanks in advanced.

  1. Do I need to pay for an additional driver to have my wife also be able to drive. She doesn't want to, but just in case.
  2. My rental code said that Collision Damage Waiver & Theft Protection were included at $0, no option to upgrade or ad more. My Chase card also provides coverage and provides a letter stating so. Am I good here or is there something else I should do?

Illegal pass to make an illegal turn on red.

This light technically is a single lane but it’s wide enough for two lanes so people naturally sort them selves into a right hand turn only or left hand turn only lane. The street across from me is one way. Person comes up behind me goes around to my left and cuts in front to run the red light.

edit: timestamp didn’t adjust for DST. It was 7:57am or during the time when right in red is prohibited.

Got the adjustable 22mm WhiteLine sway bar. Got the car on jack stands but couldn't get the bolt holding the link to the lower control arm to release. I'm thinking of just getting new OEM end links and hardware. Besides more PB Blaster any tips to get the bolt to release?
