Mardana's Children: The Rababis of Lahore

A short film on the Rababis of Lahore, a community of Pakistani Muslim musicians with deep-rooted ties to the Sikhs by way of a centuries-old music tradition. Mardana's Children traces the current descendants of Bhai Mardana (the 15th century musician and disciple of Guru Nanak), piecing together a story of shared devotion across India and Pakistan, traversing the modern boundaries of religious and nation, and highlighting the unifying power of music in the face of the divisive legacy of identity politics and the partition of 1947.

Hell in Islam

From everything I've researched into Islam so far I like and understand it. Recently I have been thinking that heaven/hell makes more sense than reincarnation, but am still stuck on hell.

The christian hell and saved by faith doesn't make sense, but eternal hell in general doesn't make sense too. Like what does that achieve. Also who goes to hell. I've also heard of how taking shahadah wipes past sins, or doing things on certain days gives you more good deeds which I also don't understand. I know a few people who have read the Quran and understoof Islam without any bias or misinformation, and still didn't choose it, and just believe in one God but not religion. Are they going to hell? Even if they lead good lives? Isn't that God's fault for not making the true religion more obvious. I feel like believing in One God and them creating everything is obvious but religion isn't

Why did Ali Dawah remove his marriage documentary?

He talked about releasing his documentary for years and did, now I'm unable to find it as it's been privated and there's no info about why anywhere. Just curious if anybody knows why

Scared of growing old

I don't really have a desire to get married, have kids. I've planned my life in a way that I can move countries every 2 years and work, then when between 35-50 I get bored I will retire on some farmland and live self sufficiently, with some form of online work to have some income.

However, although this is the life I lead I fear for the far future when I'm old. I grew up with my grandparents, am very close to them, and once they retired they spent more time with us, eased the burden on my parents, and they had company, if they were ever ill we took the best care of them. This dynamic is very natural, the grandparents live with you and your kids, you take care of them, you don't have to pay someone else to look after your kid, your wife can work if she wants without feeling bad, once your grandparents die they give the house to you. On the contrary the west where I live encourages you paying a seperate rent/mortgage, sending your kids to daycare, your parents then needing caregivers, you being stressed from work.

I am very scared of being old and then being in a care home, having no kids or grandkids worried about me etc. But on the other hand that life wouldn't make me happy in the first place. I'm very conflicted and would appreciate any advice

Are you scared of being old and alone?

For context, I have no desire to get in a relationship, marriage, kids etc and I enjoy being alone. I've planned my life so that I'll be working in a new country every year or two, then at a certain point between 35-50 when I get bored I'll move onto some land and become largely self sufficient.

Although this will make me live a very happy life, I still fear being old and alone, not having kids or grandkids to look after me when I can't phsycally move. I did this for my grandparents, and probably will for my parents which is what triggered me to think about it

What to do in life if you're asexual?

The only reason I ever wanted to get a 9-5 or stay in my country and work and save etc. is to eventually have a family. However I have literally no desire to have a family, relationship, marriage, kids or anything. Wondering what to do with my life instead. I do have plans to travel and work then retire on a farm and live self sufficiently but still feel like I may regret it

Why do women defend Islam so much?

Not talking about religion, but behavior. From my experiences with muslim friends and general people in a western country, it's usually the mother that shouts and beats their daughter for not wearing hijab or dressing revealingly. Same with sons when they do something bad. Had a case in my city where the son did some things to a child and his mother was a local politician and covered it up.

Why do people always walk around?

I'm actually born in the UK, but whenever I see videos of Pakistan/India/Bangladesh people are always just doing nothing on the street and staring. If something happens a crowd just quickly forms. Why are there so many people like that just aimlessly walking around?

[IWantOut] 19m UK -> China

I took a gap year and decided I'd like to homestead and just live self sufficiently, maybe with an online income too. This part of my life I already have covered since I have some family land which is enough for me. The land is in India and I can live there without a visa since my grandparents were born there

However, before that I want to travel as much as possible. My first option was gonna be to just graduate and use the degree to do ESL, but I realise it's pretty stagnant and competitive. From being a tutor in the past I know teaching is probably the only job I will enjoy, as well as allowing me to travel comfortably. I feel like if I got qualified as a teacher, did some teaching in the Uk, I could get better jobs and so save more and explore the country better while I'm there. I'll also have that qualification of being a teacher, and can probably save up some money working in the Uk. I'd probably teach maths/computer science. I will most likely not be returning to the Uk after either, definitely not permanetly.

I wrote China as that's the country I'd wanna move to the most, though I'd also travel to various others and hopefully teach there.

I mainly want advice since I understand I'm young and naive, so want some guidance from people with more life experience

Why are women always out mens leagues?

Many times I hear people saying to a man he punched above his weight or shes out his league, when in reality they are the same in terms of attractiveness to their partner

Do we just see women as pretty in general? If I ask either men or women to rate a woman’s look the lowest they go is a 6 whereas for a man they use the scale properly and you’ll hear 1s and 2s.

I also know all my guy friends basically find every woman attractive and would “do it” and are pretty desperate, whether they look good or not.

I feel like this leads to guys getting bored after getting a girlfriend and just moving onto the next, and the inverse where women “punch above their weight”, and end up dating a scumbag who’s seeing other women

Why do I cry when doing simran?

Whenever I do Vaheguru Simran my eyes get teary. I don't full cry, I can't remember the last time I did, but a tear or two go down my eyes. If I just start doing simran now it won't happen, it happens when I'm in the headspace and actually sit down to only focus on naam simran. The only other feeling I get is goosebumps

What's India like?

I got invited to this sub idk why, so I thought I'd make a post. I'm 19, born and raised in the UK. I am debating whether to move to India, I really don't like it in the UK. We obviously have things that are better than India, and I'd probably get annoyed by those things, e.g littering. Tbh I doubt I'd work in India though I'd probably just go live on my family land and hold some online job or grow a business. I'm gonna be travelling after University anyway, ultimately I will settle on some land somewhere and India makes sense since we already own some. I'll live there for a year before I decide if I wanna stay but I can see my life there. Here it's literally just soulless work and no fulfillment. It's probably similar in India but I'm privaleged that it won't be for me

When I’m on social media I only see non-Sikhs mentioning Khalistan to cause fights. On normal videos of Punjab history, sikhs or whatnot you’ll see someone mention khalistan or say smth like “Khalistanis are great” to cause fights.

As a Sikh, I almost never hear my own people mention it. In Punjab I literally nevee saw any posters, flags or the word said. In the Uk, where I live there are posters at Gurudwaras, or flags at Nagar Kirtans, but this is a small amount of people. The vast majority don’t care or are against it, and actually find it rude that they try fly the flag in religious places since it has nothing to do with Sikhi. Unfortunately most people also stay out their way so don’t scold them. I actually think they are paid by some group to cause divide because I haven’t actually met a Sikh that supports it the 20 years I’ve been here, other than 13 year old kids who have not researched anything or even understand how the world works. Plus the leaders of these khalistani groups actually bring their kids out of Punjab, the same place they want to make a country, which just shows the truth.

The most important thing to understand with Khalistan is what does Sikhi say about it. Sikhs are not a great example of Sikhi. Most don’t even keep long hair, the ones that do don’t even follow sikhi, or prayers and eat halal meat etc. Even someone who does follow Sikhi has probably never researched Sikhi deeply or our connection to Sanatan dharma.

I have spoke with quite a few knowledgable Sikhs. They were all against Khalistan. Nihang Singhs are probably the only Sikhs who still follow Sikhi the same way our Gurus did. You will not find any Nihang Singh that supports Khalistan.

This is Sikhi’s reason. I haven’t even got into how it wouldn’t actually work, 2 nuclear powers each side, landlocked, mainly agriculture focused so would require importing majority of things, the demographic and sikh diaspora etc

Frankly most Indians are also similar and haven’t even researched Sanatan dharma themselves. If they did they wouldn’t be jumping to hate people. Sikhs and hindus are the same brotherhood, our Guru’s died to make sure your dharam stayed alive, and likewise Hindu’s gave their sons to the Khalsa since they knew it was part of dharma and a righteous way. This still exists in Punjab actually, you’ll see hindus and sikhs attending each others religious celebrations.

Unfortunately the way the internet works is that bad things get views, which causes people who have never even met a Sikh to be hating them. I do hope Sikhs learn more about Sikhi and stop these groups themselves which would save the trouble. I also hope more Indians understand that majority of Sikhs don’t want to be separate from India.
Forgive me for any mistakes

I am Punjabi Sikh, from UK. Most of my friends are Pakistanis, though the India/Pakistan hate is still carried by some people on both sides.

I’ve heard of Sikhs still in Pakistan. My question is to you guys, have you had interactions with them, or other minorities? How do you view them? How do people generally treat them? How do they feel about Pakistan?

My current thoughts is that they live fine in Pakistan. There will be attacks, or those conversion cases, but they are by a select few people. The reason it seems like it’s everyone is because people don’t take action against it. The same thing happens in India too, most people wouldn’t harm a muslim but when a select few do they rarely call them out.

Since Muslims got a separate country in partition, why didn’t India get to be a state only for hindus and other dharmic religions.

It seems unfair that the premise for muslims to get a new country was that they are different and don’t want to be politically dominated, whereas India still has a sizeable portion of muslims so will have to cater. Plus the percentage of muslims will rise like it does in every country and one day may get close to the hindu one.
