I have a 11' 6" x 15' area in my basement. Is this enough space for a bar table?

I am remodeling the basement. We carved out a 1000 sq foot area for a bar and theater area. We have a space left over.... it is 11' 6" x 15'. I was thinking about utilizing the space for a pool table. It seems to me that I would have about 48" around the whole table.

I havn't played pool a ton over the years. Just thought it would be nice to learn... and to use it when we have friends over to watch games.

Is this too tight of a space? I don't want it to look like we stuffed it in the corner. Is it a 'sacrifce' to use 48" sticks?

Thoughts?

Edit- Thank you for all the input. I tend to agree... it would be too tight.

Elco Koto 2" light on gimble causing 'hot spot' on wall that will have a painting.

We are roughing in the utilites on a basement remdol. I am using Elco Koto canless lights everywhere. I have a few walls where I want to highlight art. I was going to use a 2" with a gimble styled trim kit. It leaves a hot spot at the top of the light wash on the wall. I know they have filters.... but I never used them.

Any thoughts? Any thoughts on using any other light? I don't want to spend a ton of money on a studio or museum quality fixture.

Also... I am using 2700k lights in the basement. It is a bar, lounge area and a media area/ home theater.

I read that 3000k is better for art. Does anyone know if this is true and if it is common to use 3000k in selected areas to highlight art?

Thanks!

Do you get permits for bathroom remodels?

Imagine a 5x8 bathroom. Full bathtub to shower remodel. Replace tile floor. Replace vanity, countertop and medicine cabinet. Replace lights and fan. No major plumbing moved.

Do you get a permits?

I'm OCD. I spent 25 years remodeling mid to high end bathrooms. We do not need to get permits for R&R (remove and replace) but we do need permits if we add lights, a heated floor, move plumbinig, move walls..... so on and so on.....

I havn't pulled many permits in 25 years.

I don't have time in my schedule to wait for a plumber to move the waterlines or drain a few feet. Half the time they send their 'C Team' that do mediocre work at best. I don't think I ever had a sub that I didn't have to fix something after they left.

If a homeowner wants to pull permits... I don't discourage it. I just explain to them that it will take a little longer and be more expensive.

I was just curious to see what other contractors do.....

I've been a regenerated Chrisitan for 25 years. For 25 years I have been hearing leaders acknowledge the fact that the church today is radically different than what we see in the first century church and I see very little effort or desire to change.....

The Bible outlines a very different Church to what we experience today.....

  1. Devoted to the apostles' teaching (Acts 2:42)
  2. Committed to genuine fellowship and community (Acts 2:42)
  3. Met in homes and shared life together (Acts 2:46)
  4. Prayed continually and depended on God (Acts 2:42; 4:31)
  5. Shared their possessions and cared for those in need (Acts 2:44–45; 4:32–35)
  6. Loved one another sacrificially (John 13:34–35)
  7. Boldly preached the gospel despite persecution (Acts 4:29–31)
  8. Practiced holiness, repentance, and church discipline (Acts 5:1–11; 1 Corinthians 5)
  9. Every believer served using their spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12; Romans 12)
  10. Made disciples, not just converts (Matthew 28:19–20)

Today... most folks go to church one day a week... if your lucky. They show up for two slow songs... one fast song... bulletins... 30-45 minute teaching or sermon... collections or communion... and one last song... but folks start to leave to beat traffic.

If you go to church 52 weeks out of the year you would be lucky to get 40 hours of teachings/ sermons.

The only time I felt like I was living out a Biblical life was when I went on mission trips to Mexico. We lived together, ate together, prayed together, worshiped together and worked together daily. It was wonderful.

I have never been to a church that had trained elders meet with ALL the congregations on a quarterly or bi yearly basis to cousnel them, disciple them, visit their home, understand their spiritual health, their interests, understand their needs and their gifts.

I have seen church discipline used once.

I can get better teachings online. I can meet my brethern in Christ at a coffee shop or at their homes.

I don't understand what the local 'church' is doing anymore......

Why don't churches in specific towns or cities work together? You know why... because the leaders are fearful about their 'numbers' and losing members.

How is there not an app that connects local church members with the same interests? A place you can go to get help. An app that matches people talents with people needs. Something that enables folks to grow and be discipled. A marketplace that helps our elders and gives jobs and mentorship to our youth.

It just seems like we are so far behind. Anyone feel the same? It seems to me that we are going to need to do more and rely more on community in the years to come.....

I would appreciate your input.

Has anyone used the KBRS shower pan, drain and wall system? I have a distain for Schluter pans because they are way too soft. I used the Wedi system years ago.... it was pretty good... but expensive at the time. This is looking pretty good. How do you like it? Does it compare to Wedi?

How do you judge the spirtual health of a church?

George Barna has been tracking church stats for decades and his data indicates that around 10% of self confessed born again Christians have a Biblical world view.

We live in a world where it is common for folks to say 'Christ is King'... but they don't have a testimony of regeneration, a new relatonship with their sin, repentance, ongoing sanctificaton and exhibit the fruit of the Spirit.

How do you know the spiritual health, needs and gifts of the congregation?

Anyone installing Onyx or Swanstone style panel systems? How do you scale your prices?

I am finding that alot of those national brands who install acrylic shower panels are charging 15-20k for a shower. The same price that I charge for a tiled shower. Obviously it is sold as more of a convience thing... since it cuts down on the time on the install.

I was thinking about offering Onyx or Swanstone panels to my clients... but how do I price it out? I don't feel comfortable charging 15-18k for a panel system that takes a few days to install and the same price for a real shower and pan with subway tile that can take well over a week.

Is it possible to thrive as a remodel contractor that specializes in just bathroom remodels?

I've been remodeling (kitchens, bathrooms, basement, built ins, cabinetry, trim and finish work) mid to high end homes for about 25 years.... and I am getting burnt out. I do alot of design... I am VERY particular... but the big projects are killing me.

I'm thinking about changing my focus to bathrooms. Partial remodels. Full remodels. DIY consultation. Piece work. I don't care.... I think it would eliminate alot of stress and time I spend designing projects and playing interior designer.

But is it possible to thrive in a world with a focus on just bathrooms?

For context.... I'm in a college town in Colorado and the median household income is pretty high compared to national averages. I'm a owner operator... in the field every day.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Getting into the Porta Potty buisness.... best pump option without buying a vacuum truck.

I've been remodeling homes for the past 20 years. I have the opportunity to supply and maintain about 15 porta potties on a clients ranch for events.

I don't want to buy a slide in vacuum pump/ tank until I can grow the buisness a bit and see if its the right 'retirement' side hustle.

What is the best option? Can a trash/ sewage pump and an IBC tote work for a bit?

Any thoughts for fresh water?

Thanks!

What are the best options for my application?

I'm a general contractor. I have been commission to build a few high end dry porta potties and outfit a pump house on a nice ranch that does alot of events.

These buildings will be used intermittently... mostly Spring, Summer, Fall and a bit of Winter activities. They will be powered by a solar panel and probably a 100 ah battery that will be replaced and charged as needed. This is all 12 volts.

Hopefully..... the buildings will have the following features....

1- General LED lighing switched by a switch or motion censor.

2- A small green LED light that is lit when the unit is vacant and a red LED light when the unit is not vacant.... switched on by something like a plunger of magnet when the door is locked.

3- Exhaust fan.... switched by a switch or a tempeture censor.

4- A big button to engage the water pump.... with a timer.... it would run for about 10 seconds and then switch off.

5- Another big button to engage the water pump.... wth a timer... it would run for about 3-4 seconds. It would also open a solenoid valve to give about a .5-1 second burst of compressed air. It would have to have a mechanism that would keep people from pressing it over and over again. Maybe 20 scond delay between the abilty for the switch to work.

6- We may have some outdoor lights that are triggered by a switch and or a light sensor.

Whatever 'brain' or PLC I use it needs the ability to store the program and not have a long boot up or any programming every time 12v is connected and disconnected.

This gives you a good idea of what I am looking for.... I was told to look at a Siemens LOGO 8.

Thoughts? What is the simplest... most robust... least amount of service once programmed way of meeting these goals?

Thanks!

Does anyone have any thoughts between the Tusk and Rabaconda wheel balancer? Is the Rabaconda worth the extra money? I have a Rabaconda tire changer... it would be nice to have matching tools... but not sure if its worth the exta $120. Thanks

Wheel vibration.....

I plated my 23 KTM 300xc. I have DOT knobby tires. Dunlop D606 on the reat and a Pirelli MT21 on the front. They have tubes and rim locks. I balanced the wheels using counterweights. Tire pressure good. Chain tensioned

When I get over 50mph on the road... the bike shakes pretty good. You can see the front fender going up and down. I pull in the clutch.... it's still shaking so I know it's the wheels.

I took the counterweights off.... same thing.

I read that riding on the roads with knobbies can cause harmonic and frequency with the wheel.

Has anyone else had these kind of issues on the road with knobbies?

Mobile Storage

I've been a custom home builder/ remodel contractor for many years and I have a high proficiency in wood and metal fab work. I'm looking for an exit.

Over the years many of my clients would need mobile storage solutions but the home owner or HOA didn't want to leave it on the driveway. Backyard access is typically tight.

I was thinking about making a moduar storage unit that can be broken down and errected in a few hours so it can be easily moved into a backyard. They would have a clean ascetic... to look more like a shed then a temporary storage solution. When the client no longer needs it... I go back break it down.

I would rent them out by the month and charge for delivery and pick up.

In my area they charge $130 for a 8x20 shipping container... $150 drop off and pick up. I think it would cost about $2500- $3000 to build... plus my time.

At $125 a month..... it would take 24 months to get a return on $3300. Then it's all profit.

At $150 a month... it woud take 20 months to get a return of $3300. Then it's all profit.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Particle Board (furniture board) vs plywood......... MDF painted doors?

I've been a mid to high end remodel contractor for 25 years. I recently moved from the midwest to Colorado... and I am in the process of finding a new cabinet shop for a basement remodel.

I historically bought plywood cabinets, maple dovetail drawer boxes and poplar doors for paint grade finishes.

I spoke to a full custom shop today and they said the majority of the cabinets they build are particle board (furniture board). They CNC cut one piece MDF doors. They said that they prefer MDF doors because you don't get cracks inbetween the stiles and rails.... especially in this dry climate.

What are your guys thoughts on partical board? Am I stuck in a boomer loop in thinking that 'plywood is the best'?

Thoughts on the MDF door and drawer fronts? Is this a climate specific approach?

I would really like to hear from guys with big automated shops who do their own finishing.... what do you see in the real world in regards to issues and call backs?
