Did OP get off easy in that storm?

Got an alert from a place in Midtown that I volunteer at that they were closed because of storm damage, and parts of the NE KCMO got hammered with big hail. My storm-reactive dog slept right through it and my neighborhood in Merriam looks fine. Did we miss the brunt of the storm?

Recommendations for legit slow bike ride groups?

Love riding, but am definitely a party pace person, keeping it to around 10mph and just going nice and steady. I hit 50 recently and have no friends outside of work and while I generally don’t mind spending time alone it is also nice to be around people sometimes, too. Any recommended slow pace group rides in the metro? My sprinting days were 30 years ago lol

How to tell the difference between Avid disc brake MTB vs road version?

Have a Disc Trucker that I bought used and with a Jones Loop installed. Seller included the original drop bar with Tektro levers and Microshift bar end shifters. Avid makes MTB and road versions of the BB7 calipers that use different cable pull ratios and I’m assuming these are road ones to work with the road levers, but was thinking about replacing the levers are these are pretty beat and was wondering what I should look out for to be sure of which version I have. Thanks in advance!

Blue Lug tariffs to the USA?

Want to buy some small accessories like reflectors and the like from Blue Lug, order would be $100-$150 at the most. I literally haven’t bought anything internationally since the ridiculous tariffs started. How much extra should I expect to
Get hit with if I place this size of an order?

Beginner - good source of lessons etc? Clawhammer

No formal music training or lessons, can’t read music (tabs I can handle of course), have played guitar for 35 years (and suck) as well as dabbling in banjo, bass and ukulele, and I have a decent banjo (Deering Goodtime). Definitely no time for actual lessons, but is there a particularly good YouTuber or the like where I could actually start from the ground up and see progression in my playing. I’ve dabbled for years but trying random beginners song lessons seems tough for me since I don’t have any fundamentals. Or an online buy it once sort of program that is great? Any advice much appreciated, thanks!

How have farmers’ market tomatoes been?

Wife’s birthday is this week and she is dying for BLTs. I know of a small store that has good tomatoes in the summer but I wouldn’t be opposed to farmers markets, too. How have they been this summer? Sadly I have had other priorities this summer and haven’t been to a FM yet.

Let’s see pics of safety straps for front racks

I just learned that you’re supposed to use some sort of strap on the headtube or handlebars and front rack to prevent the front rack from breaking and causing rider to endo. I never knew this and would like to see pics of how people rig this up so I can be safe, thanks!

Conan - Lawrence, KS - 7/17/26

Conan put on a ferocious set last night. Was a little tired by the time they came on (Lawrence is about 40-45 mins drive, came into town early and had some beers and dinner, ended up at the venue at doors, and there were three opening bands, so it was a bit after 10pm when Conan started), but I perked right up of course! They ended with Violence Dimension so I’m not sure if they threw an extra song in there or changed the setlist a little. Awesome performance, wall of sound from start to finish.

Question: Sun exposure with sunscreen applied?

I’ve only been getting tattooed for a couple years and everything is above the elbows for me (work in a conservative industry). To date I have been very careful about keeping my tattoos covered in the sun. Is it still unadvised to expose them to sun if sunscreen is being used? I’m sure the safest thing is that a UV ray never touch them but for practical purposes is properly covered in sunscreen almost as good or is it still a bad idea?

Melvins Kansas City set list 7-16-26

All bangers, a little over 60 minutes, absolute legends! They were out of anything in 2xl though so I went home merch-less but that frees me up to get something at Conan tomorrow night lol. My poor body

Anyone know doors-open time for the Kansas City show tonight?

Seeing Melvins at RecordBar tonight and their website just says 7pm (not specifying doors or start of show so I’m assuming that’s doors) while ticket says 8pm. I’m planning to show up early anyway but I didn’t want to be insanely early. Thanks in advance! And then tomorrow night headed to Lawrence for Conan. What a time to be alive

Tellason Chore Coat - sleeves way too long… recommendations?

Bought a Tellason Coverall chore coat (Cone Mills, non-Selvedge) and had to go triple X because I’m big and wanted some extra room for layering. The coat fits fine except the sleeves are way too long. Unlike a regular denim jacket where the sleeves can be rolled up, these ones are un-rollable so my only option would be tailoring. I guess I should just take it to my tailor and ask his opinion but has anyone taken a denim jacket like this to a tailor for sleeves to be shortened and if so, was it a good experience? I will need like 5 inches off the sleeves and I’m just under 6’ tall so I guess they assume anyone who wears their 3x is 7 feet tall and has orangutan arms lol

Are there any high quality bags made for walkers?

My wife is just turning 50 and has to use a walker to get around at all. She has a bag on it that is basically just an open thing to toss stuff in but nothing is secure and everything for walkers just seems to be made like garbage. Coming from the bike world where people make high end frame bags and the like I would be surprised if there isn’t a more niche, high end bag maker that caters to walkers. Or am I crazy? I want t to upgrade her kit but not with Amazon garbage. Any pointers?

Annual housefly invasion? Anyone else?

Seems like once every summer I have a housefly invasion and that invasion is now lol. I have no idea where they come from. I don’t have garbage lying around, no fruit/veggies out on the counter, no potted plants indoors, I don’t leave patio door open, etc. They congregate on the kitchen window right above the sink and on the sliding glass door to the deck which is five feet away, but I’ll swat 5-6 of them and 10 mins later there will be 10 more. Ideas where they may be coming from? They’re regular house flies, not fruit flies.

PSA for cyclists - Nalgene-sized water bottle cages

If you’re a bike rider and didn’t know, you can get 32oz-sized water bottle cages that are just like regular metal bottle cages, just bigger. There are quite a few options but my favorites are Tanaka’s “8 moves” bottle cage. Comes in quite a few nice colors and is well made. You can also add a Voile strap to keep the bottle from rattling and to keep it totally locked in over rough stuff. Best prices I’ve seen in the USA are from Soma. Probably best for people who want to stop for a minute to hydrate. Fiddling with a Voile and uncapping a Nalgene would be a bit much while continuing to pedal, but for us “just out for a fun ride” folks these are awesome.

Lemon/lime press recommendation

Update: may have solved my own question. The Hudson Essentials is the style I am looking for, is stainless steel with no coatings, plastics, etc and is on sale on their website for $30. I’m not familiar with that brand but it checks all the boxes.

I have had my current citrus press (the kind that two halves with a hinge on one side and you flip it open to load the chamber and then swing the top half back over and squeeze the handle together to press the fruit) for a long time but it is coated or painted and the coating/paint is starting to chip and that doesn’t breed a lot of confidence. For a single use kitchen item I actually use mine a lot so I’d love to find something that isn’t coated in anything and would be a last purchase for me. Any brand recommendations? I think I prefer the idea of this squeezer style vs the dish with a cone thing in the middle, although I can’t say for sure. I don’t do a super high volume or anything, it’s usually 1 lemon or a couple limes at a time.

Anyplace in the metro area for broasted chicken?

Looking for real, truly broasted chicken. Broasting is a process of frying chicken in a special broasting machine which is basically a pressure cooker + deep frier. I think it’s more common in the northern Midwest but hoping somewhere in the metro makes this style of fried chicken, thanks!

Lightweight zippered hoody (men’s) in larger sizes for use on planes… I get chilly but also hot

Looking for a good quality very lightweight hoody primarily for use when on planes but I guess also for just light chill working at a desk. I’m NEVER cold but on planes I can get chilly and I’m a big guy and not flexible so I always just start the flight wearing my hoody or I’ll never get it on otherwise. If I fall asleep I’ll wake up burning hot and sweating. It has been that way my entire life if I take a nap in any circumstances. So I’m looking for a very lightweight hoody. I prefer 100% cotton for this but not committed to it. MUST have zipper and hood. I don’t want it to be like sun hoody lightweight but I do want it to be lighter than an average sweatshirt. Must come in XXL regular size for fat guys and bonus points if it seems like it would work for someone with long torso. I’m currently using Amazon lightweight hoody and that’s still heavier than I want. Also they’re short in the torso, especially after washing and don’t come in longer lengths. I know this is very specific, thanks in advance!
