Pahalgam was Magical!

I stayed at Pahalgam for two weeks and it was refreshing and mesmerising. I took some effort to find the rooms with best views in the budget and it was really worth it.

Tax Optimization Strategy: Splitting a ₹10.48L Tax Bill between Amex Platinum Travel & HDFC DCBM

Option Tax to be Paid Fees on Tax Portal (Incl. Late Fee) Total Amount to be Paid on Tax Portal Base Rewards Milestone Rewards Net Reward Value Credit Card Annual Fee Net Rewards (Profit/Loss)
Row 1: Netbanking (June) ₹10,48,000 ₹0 ₹10,48,000 ₹0 ₹0 ₹0 ₹11,800 (DCBM renewal fee next year) -₹11,800 (Net Loss)
Row 2: HDFC DCBM (July) ₹10,48,000 ₹20,960 (1% gateway + 1% late fee) ₹10,68,960 ₹0 (Excluded) 10,000 RP (Unlocked instantly) ₹10,000 ₹0 (Waived via >₹8L annual spend) -₹10,960 (Net Loss)
Row 3: Amex Plat Travel (July) ₹10,48,000 ₹20,960 (1% gateway + 1% late fee) ₹10,68,960 ₹0 (Excluded) 40,000 MR Points + ₹10,000 Taj Voucher ₹26,000 ₹17,700 (Amex: ₹5.9K + DCBM: ₹11.8K) -₹12,660 (Net Loss)
Row 4: Split (7L on Amex and remaining 3.68L on DCBM) ₹10,48,000 ₹20,960 (1% gateway + 1% late fee) ₹10,68,960 ₹0 (Excluded) Amex: 40K MR + ₹10K Taj DCBM: 10K RP (32K later) ₹36,000 ₹5,900 (Amex fee only; DCBM waived via 8L path) +₹9,140 (Remaining Net Profit)

Hey everyone,

I have a ₹10.48 Lakh advance/self-assessment tax bill due, and I've been crunching the numbers to see if it makes sense to route it through credit cards to hit milestones, or if the portal fees and delayed payment penalties completely destroy the value.

My current arsenal includes the HDFC DCBM, and Axis M4B, and I am considering picking up a new Amex Platinum Travel card specifically to milk its milestone rewards.

I’ve mapped out 4 different scenarios taking into account:

  1. 0% Base Rewards: Both Amex and HDFC give flat 0 base rewards on government/tax spends.
  2. 1% Gateway Fee: Assumed on the tax portal for credit cards.
  3. 1% Late Payment Fee (Section 234): Paying in July instead of June triggers a flat 1% interest penalty on the tax amount.
  4. DCBM Fee Waiver Status: If I don't use DCBM for this, I won't hit the ₹8L annual waiver threshold, triggering an ₹11,800 renewal fee next year.
  5. Card Valuation: Valuing HDFC RP at ₹1.00 (SmartBuy) and Amex MR at a realistic, conservative ₹0.40.

- I may have to pay additional 5L+ tax in the upcoming quarters which might help to hit the annual milestone on DCBM (specific to row 4).
- I also give a try for BizBlack. But not luck.

Mountains, 5G, and Absolute Peace: My 2-Week Pahalgam Workcation [OC]

I recently wrapped up a two-week "work from mountains" stint in Pahalgam. If you are planning something similar, here is the lowdown on how it went and what to look out for:

🏨 Accommodation & Views

  • My Setup: I stayed at a hotel with stunning mountain views for ₹2,000/day—worth every single rupee (without meals)
  • The Budget Reality: You can easily find budget stays in Pahalgam and Laripora for around ₹1,000/day, but you will likely sacrifice the view.
  • Pro-Tip: If you are booking a long-term workation online, double-check and verify the room view with the property before paying.

🍛 Food Options

  • The Choice: The hotel offered a 3-meal-a-day package for ₹4,500, but I opted out and decided to eat from outside.
  • The Verdict: Eating at local restaurants and nearby dhabas is the way to go. It gives you way more variety, and flexibility. Food at dhabas were cheap but not hygenic like local Restaurants. I was able to find few hygenic dhabas and I balanced the food eating from both Dhabas and Restaurants. My food expense per day was ~600.

📶 Connectivity & Internet

  • Hotel Wi-Fi: Decent and stable enough, clocking in at around 30 Mbps for both uploads and downloads.
  • The Lifesaver: Airtel 5G was the real MVP of the trip. It was incredibly reliable and regularly blasted speeds over 200 Mbps, making video calls and heavy lifting a breeze.

Juggling PayZapp, Axis, & CRED – How to track mid-month payments & multi-app bills?

Hey everyone,

I use multiple apps (HDFC PayZapp, Axis, Kiwi) to manage my credit cards. Most of the payments are made via Payzapp except for Axis and Kiwi cards. I shifted most billing cycles to the end of the month, and I often make partial payments before the 15th to keep my utilization under 30%.

The Pain Point:
If I pay a bill using one app, the other apps (especially PayZapp) don't sync. They still show the bill as unpaid.

  1. Does CRED track payments made via other apps? (e.g., via SMS/Email scanning?)
  2. Is there a better app for this? One that actually tracks live balances and partial payments regardless of where I pay?

How do you manage multi-app tracking without losing your sanity? Thanks!

Please note: I do not require transaction tracking. I am using the open-source software GnuCash to manually record all transactions, including credit card, banking, points, accounts payable and receivable, income, expenses, investing, and more. Once the bill is generated, I verify the transactions in GnuCash against the bill and add any missing transactions.

What's the best and cheap way to get Higher AirIndia Maharaja Status?

I am buying a Car with Axis M4B (already paid half amount, and the remaining amount is planned for June and July) and getting 8L+ Edge Reward Points. Most of this points will be converted to Air India Maharaja Points, and I am doing a lot of domestic travel now.

Current AI status is RED. How can I get higher status easily?

Why:
- Did 4 domestic flights in the last 2 weeks and some of them where with 1 stop. The lounge experience was horrible at some places and looks like travellers with Higher status have better lounges or dedicated area. I am okay with Economy / Premium Economy seats during the flights for domestic travel. So my aim to have better experience at airports.
- Tickets booked via points are not getting counted to status change via flight counts.
